Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers present in this text survey both distributed shared memory (DSM) efforts and commercial DSM systems. The book discusses relevant issues that make the concept of DSM one of the most attractive approaches for building large-scale, high-performance multiprocessor systems. The authors provide a general introduction to the DSM field as well as a broad survey of the basic DSM concepts, mechanisms, design issues, and systems. The book concentrates on basic DSM algorithms, their enhancements, and their performance evaluation. In addition, it details implementations that employ DSM solutions at the software and the hardware level. This guide is a research and development reference that provides state-of-the art information that will be useful to architects, designers, and programmers of DSM systems.

Book excerpt: This volume contains papers presented at the NATO sponsored Advanced Research Workshop on "Software for Parallel Computation" held at the University of Calabria, Cosenza, Italy, from June 22 to June 26, 1992. The purpose of the workshop was to evaluate the current state-of-the-art of the software for parallel computation, identify the main factors inhibiting practical applications of parallel computers and suggest possible remedies. In particular it focused on parallel software, programming tools, and practical experience of using parallel computers for solving demanding problems. Critical issues relative to the practical use of parallel computing included: portability, reusability and debugging, parallelization of sequential programs, construction of parallel algorithms, and performance of parallel programs and systems. In addition to NATO, the principal sponsor, the following organizations provided a generous support for the workshop: CERFACS, France, C.I.R.A., Italy, C.N.R., Italy, University of Calabria, Italy, ALENIA, Italy, The Boeing Company, U.S.A., CISE, Italy, ENEL - D.S.R., Italy, Alliant Computer Systems, Bull RN Sud, Italy, Convex Computer, Digital Equipment Corporation, Rewlett Packard, Meiko Scientific, U.K., PARSYTEC Computer, Germany, TELMAT Informatique, France, Thinking Machines Corporation.

Book excerpt: Providing a shared memory abstraction in distributed systems is a powerful tool that can simplify the design and implementation of software systems for networked platforms. This enables the system designers to work with abstract readable and writable objects without the need to deal with the complexity and dynamism of the underlying platform. The key property of shared memory implementations is the consistency guarantee that it provides under concurrent access to the shared objects. The most intuitive memory consistency model is atomicity because of its equivalence with a memory system where accesses occur serially, one at a time. Emulations of shared atomic memory in distributed systems is an active area of research and development. The problem proves to be challenging, and especially so in distributed message passing settings with unreliable components, as is often the case in networked systems. We present several approaches to implementing shared memory services with the help of replication on top of message-passing distributed platforms subject to a variety of perturbations in the computing medium.

Book excerpt: Clusters of workstations/PCs connected by o?-the-shelf networks have become popular as a platform for cost-e?ective parallel computing. Hardware and so- ware technological advances have made this network-based parallel computing platform feasible. A large number of research groups from academia and industry are working to enhance the capabilities of such a platform, thereby improving its cost-e?ectiveness and usability. These developments are facilitating the mig- tion of many existing applications as well as the development of new applications on this platform. Continuing in the tradition of the two previously successful workshops, this 3rd Workshop on Communication, Architecture and Applications for Netwo- based Parallel Computing (CANPC’99) has brought together researchers and practitioners working in architecture, system software, applications and perf- mance evaluation to discuss state-of-the-art solutions for network-based parallel computing systems. This workshop has become an excellent forum for timely dissemination of ideas and healthy interaction on topics at the cutting edge in cluster computing technology. Each submitted paper underwent a rigorous review process, and was assigned to at least 3 reviewers, including at least 2 program committee members. Each paper received at least 2 reviews, most received 3 and some even had 4 reviews.

It includes sufficient coverage of architectural details to understand correctness and performance on modern multicore machines, and sufficient coverage of higher-level issues to understand how synchronization is embedded in modern programming languages. The primary intended audience for this book is "systems programmers"--the authors of operating systems, library packages, language run-time systems, concurrent data structures, and server and utility programs. Much of the discussion should also be of interest to application programmers who want to make good use of the synchronization mechanisms available to them, and to computer architects who want to understand the ramifications of their design decisions on systems-level code

In part, autonomous robots are designed to perform tasks that are too dirty, dull, or dangerous for humans. With nontrivial autonomy and volition, they may soon claim their own place in human society. These robots will be our allies as we strive for understanding our natural and man-made environments and build positive synergies around us. Although we may never perfect replication of biological capabilities in robots, we must harness the inevitable emergence of robots that synchronizes with our own capacities to live, learn, and grow. This book is a snapshot of motivations and methodologies for our collective attempts to transform our lives and enable us to cohabit with robots that work with and for us. It reviews and guides the reader to seminal and continual developments that are the foundations for successful paradigms. It attempts to demystify the abilities and limitations of robots. It is a progress report on the continuing work that will fuel future endeavors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the presentations given at the Workshop on OpenMP App- cations and Tools, WOMPAT 2001. The workshop was held on July 30 and 31, 2001 at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA. It brought together designers, users, and researchers of the OpenMP application programming int- face. OpenMP has emerged as the standard for shared memory parallel progr- ming. For the rst time, it is possible to write parallel programs that are portable across the majority of shared memory parallel computers. WOMPAT 2001 s- ved as a forum for all those interested in OpenMP and allowed them to meet, share ideas and experiences, and discuss the latest developments of OpenMP and its applications. WOMPAT 2001 was co-sponsored by the OpenMP Architecture Review Board (ARB). It followed a series of workshops on OpenMP, including WOMPAT 2000, EWOMP 2000, and WOMPEI 2000. For WOMPAT 2001, we solicited papers formally and published them in the form of this book. The authors submitted extended abstracts, which were reviewed by the program committee. All submitted papers were accepted. The authors were asked to prepare a nal paper in which they addressed the reviewers comments. The proceedings, in the form of this book, were created in time to be available at the workshop. In this way, we hope to have brought out a timely report of ongoing OpenMP-related research and development e orts as well as ideas for future improvements.
