Book Synopsis Elizabeth Craven: Writer, Feminist and European by : Julia Gasper
Download or read book Elizabeth Craven: Writer, Feminist and European written by Julia Gasper and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2018-04-13 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Craven’s fascinating life was full of travel, love-affairs and scandals but this biography, the first to appear for a century, is the only one to focus on her as a writer and draw attention to the full range of her output, which raises her stature as an author considerably. Born into the upper class of Georgian England, she was pushed into marriage at sixteen to Lord Craven and became a celebrated society hostess and beauty, as well as mother to seven children. Though acutely conscious of her relative lack of education, as a woman, she ventured into writing poetry, stories and plays. Incompatibility and infidelities on both sides ended her marriage and she had to move to France where, living in seclusion, she wrote the little-known feminist work Letters to Her Son. In the years that followed, she travelled extensively all over Europe and turned her letters into a travelogue which is one of her best-known works. On her return she went to live in Germany as the companion and eventually second wife of the Margrave of Ansbach. At his court she organised and appeared in theatricals, and wrote several more plays of great interest, including The Modern Philosopher. In 1792 she and the Margrave settled in England, where they were never fully accepted by the more strait-laced pillars of society but mixed with all the musicians and actors and the more rakish of the Regency set. Craven continued to put on her own theatricals and write for the theatre. In her old age, she moved to Naples where she passed her time sailing, gardening and writing her Memoirs. Even in her final years, scandal dogged her, and Craven made her feminist principles and criticisms of the laws of marriage apparent through her involvement in the notorious divorce case of Queen Caroline.

Download or read book Atherstone H/C written by Margaret Hughs and published by Phillimore. This book was released on 2008 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atherstone: A Pleasantly Placed Town presents the history of Atherstone in depth and detail. Chronicling the development of a small North Warwickshire market town, it offers more generally a fascinating study of the history of Warwickshire and the Midlands. Opening with the geographical and geological background to the town's foundation, the book leads us through the Roman presence to a significant new account of the area in Anglo-Saxon times. The 13th-century establishment of the new town and the account of 14th- to 18th- century small-town life is authoritatively described. The concluding chapters deal with two notable aspects of Atherstone's history - the hatting industry and the overcrowded yards of the 19th century. Crucial to the book is a remarkable central chapter, extensively illustrated, which provides an architectural review of all the buildings in the town centre, together with carefully detailed histories of six of the oldest of these. Based on extensive research by eight highly regarded contributors, the book also draws on the work, over five years, of the History of Atherstone Research Team.
Book Synopsis Healing with Water by : Jane M. Adams
Download or read book Healing with Water written by Jane M. Adams and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healing with water provides a medical and social history of English spas and hydropathic centres from the early nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. It argues that demand for healing rather than leisure drove the growth of a number of inland resorts which became renowned for expertise and treatment facilities. These aspects were actively marketed to doctors and patients. It assesses the influence of these centres on broader patterns of resort development, leisure and sociability in Britain. The study explores ideas about water's healing potential and the varied ways it was used to maintain good health and treat a variety of illnesses. Water cures were endorsed by both orthodox and unorthodox practitioners and attracted growing numbers of patients into the twentieth century. It examines how institutions and skilled workers shaped the development of specialist resorts and considers why the NHS support for spa treatment declined from the 1960s.
Book Synopsis Kineton in the Great War, 1914-1921 by : Gillian Ashley-Smith
Download or read book Kineton in the Great War, 1914-1921 written by Gillian Ashley-Smith and published by . This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An attempt to trace the stories of the 38 men named on its War Memorial led the author to the study of Kineton at the time of World War I. Kineton, once a thriving market town and capital of its own tiny administrative area, is today little more than a village tucked away in rural South Warwickshire, and at the time of the outbreak of the war had, it is said, more horses than people.
