Book excerpt: The number of Saudi students studying in the United States quintupled over the last five years due to a fully funded Saudi government scholarship. The presence of this growing student group on American campuses has significant implications for student affairs professionals, college professors and university administrators. Moreover, Saudi students are experiencing circumstances different from other international students due to distinctive economic, academic, psychological, social, cultural, religious, and political factors. Therefore, the problem dealt with in this study is a three faceted issue: 1) the recruitment circumstances of the Saudi students as a different category of international students and the implications entailed once they are admitted into their programs; 2) the different accommodating mechanisms in place to help them achieve success, attain degrees, obtain expected college experiences; and 3) how effective the aforementioned mechanisms are with regard to Saudi students' expectations, challenges, motivation, and self-efficacy beliefs. Following a pilot study, the qualitative case study approach was determined to be best suitable for exploring the various dimensions of Saudi students' circumstances especially those concerning cultural, psychological, and social issues. The study followed the traditional qualitative method for data collection and analysis. After conducting initial site observations and document reviews, primary data were collected from open-ended interviews with students, administrators, and professors at the university. Study findings revealed various implications arising from the continuous increase of Saudi students on American higher education campuses. Relevant themes emerged from the data analysis including: cultural adjustment, self-efficacy, challenges, stereotypes, persistence, success, support mechanisms, and academic integrity. Participant responses and university support systems were utilized to develop a replicable model that can be adopted to ease the cultural adjustment of new international student groups. Findings also demonstrated how various campus units developed techniques to increase Saudi students' engagement for academic success. The current study showed that, self-efficacy beliefs, success perceptions, and cultural aspects as relevant constructs of student academic achievement, can be utilized to increase the performance level of Saudi students. Using the New International Student Group Response Model to guide orientation programs, college success seminars, freshman year programs, student life planned activities, multicultural events, and other academic activities. When coupled with an academic awareness of the case, the informed planning of these activities can increase Saudi students' academic persistence and enhance their college experience outcomes consequently.

Positive experiences can not only enhance the education of international students, but also effect understandings and attitudes of local students, administrators, faculty, and staff. A greater implication of these experiences may be their influence on long term international relationships. Few qualitative studies have been conducted that examine the dynamics of the cultural integration of Saudi students with American students during the acculturation process. The purpose of this qualitative research, therefore, is to describe and interpret the experiences and perceptions of Saudi Arabian students as they integrated with American host students on project-based, team learning assignments. These semi-structured team environments required members to interact, resolve conflicts, contribute to problem solving, and exhibit leadership. Using a phenomenological approach, 10 Saudi students studying at a rural Midwestern U.S. university participated in a series of three semi-structured open ended interviews. These interviews capture the experiences and perceptions of the participants as they interacted with host students within and beyond their project team environment, and revealed experiences within the host community that influenced their team acculturation. From the rich interview data, findings were derived that added clarity to Saudi acculturation. Prominent findings from this research reveal the encompassing effects of language deficiencies, lack of understanding of the local culture, difficulties adjusting to a mixed gender environment, neo-racism, and incompatibilities in the held values between the Saudis and the host. Most of the Saudi participants found that these barriers were surmountable and could be overcome through resilient thinking and by developing positive and meaningful relationships with their host team members. Findings also reveal the supportive role that the course instructor can play as well as campus interventions (including project based, team learning assignments) that can advantage the acculturation experience.

Social exchange theory was the theoretical framework used to explore ELP workplace benefits and challenges that accompanied Saudi student participation. The study employed an interpretive qualitative design. Data collection comprised 16 individual semi-structured interviews with junior and senior Saudi male and female students enrolled in the colleges of business and engineering. Findings revealed an overall level of satisfaction among participants, especially with respect to gains in academic knowledge, personal growth, and leadership skills. ELP workplace challenges largely related to the educational, social, and cultural backgrounds of the study participants. Sociocultural benefits were inconsistent, most notably regarding gender and group interactions between Saudi and American members. In the final analysis of gains and costs, ELP experiences point to a promising future for students returning to workplaces within the larger Saudi society. The study addresses ways to improve the ELP experience for Saudi students along with implications for American institutions of higher education, ELP program facilitators, and future Saudi students who choose to study in the U.S.

Tens of thousands of students are studying in the United States and other Western nations to obtain an education capable of investing in and transforming the country. This step-taking movement is producing an incredible amount of degree-holding citizens that is already making an impact on the development of the country. This study investigated the expectations, experiences, and career aspirations of Saudi students in the United States. That is, the study included the expectations that Saudi students hold, both academically and socially, prior to and during their study abroad experience, while also exploring the academic and social experiences of Saudi students during this journey at one public suburban Midwestern state campus. Lastly, the study investigated the career aspirations of these Saudi students in the United States and sought to determine possible differences across gender. Data was obtained from two focus groups and ten one-on-one interviews. Existing knowledge and the literature related to the Saudi Arabian educational system, the United States relationship with Saudi Arabia, and the study abroad impact on students is presented and explored early in the study. The framework applied by the researcher included the W-curve model (Gullahorn & Gullahorn, 1963), Attribution theory (Weiner, 1986), and Holland's (1973) theory of Vocational Choice. The study was qualitative in nature and applied the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach. The central emergent themes that arose within the findings consisted of academic reputation of American universities, professional development, facing negative perceptions and stereotypes, poor educational background, a fear of language and degree requirements, and change of experience over time. Overall, participants reported positive academic and social experiences in their study abroad, yet a need for enhanced advising and preparedness of students. Future research must focus on other topics related to the future of study abroad programs like those suggested in this study; increased English performance prior to college enrollment, awareness of the host culture, prospective challenges, and the educational environment.

Using qualitative case study and photo-elicitation research methods, this study conducted multiple interviews with 25 Saudi students and explored their perceptions of their American learning environment, how it differed from Saudi Arabia, and the strategies they developed to successfully reach their academic goals. A sizeable sub-group of international students, Saudis are under-represented in the literature. This study is unique because it focuses on success rather than problems, and Saudi voices are rarely heard in studies about international students. Research has been conducted to understand the challenges and needs of international students in general, and studies exist that determine how to support international students, yet there is little that focuses on Saudi Arabian students and success strategies. This study fills that gap. In this study, the Saudi participants reported that classroom practices and cultures were different. They discussed the absence of negotiation and sometimes found American instructors to be arbitrary. Other dissimilarities described were the gender differences of instructors and classmates, the presence of technology in the university, Oregon's climate and natural environment, and the availability of the library and other resources. Success strategies the Saudi participants developed included goal setting, time management, study skills, study groups, taking advantage of campus resources, hard work, and persistence. Two major contributors to their success were the natural environment, which they found to be relaxing and stress relieving, and feeling a member of the campus community. Based on the interviews, two themes arose: the successful Saudi students who participated in this research are resilient, and they have developed intercultural competence. Resilience and intercultural competence are foundational qualities that enabled the participants to bridge the gap between Saudi Arabia and the United States, settle comfortably in a new environment, adjust to rapid-fire changes and challenges, and develop the strategies to successfully work on reaching their academic goals. The author recommends supporting resilience and intercultural competence by helping Saudi students develop and enhance their coping skills and offering assistance that enhances intercultural competence.

Additionally, students who identified as an underrepresented minority (URM) race/ethnicity category were found to have statistically significant lower levels of motivation (by 12.39 points) and higher anxiety (by 12.34 points) for engineering design compared to non-URM students. These results inform the future of remote engineering classes and the importance of a sense of community for students in these courses.

This research uses a mixed methods approach informed by contact theory, which includes a survey questionnaire and interviews with Saudi students, interviews with appropriate Saudi and New Zealand officials working in their respective Ministries, informal discussions with New Zealand homestays, and observation of student behaviour. The main contributions of this research are as follows: 1) This research examines the application of contact theory in the case of Saudi students in New Zealand, and reconsiders its theoretical starting point. 2) This study finds no foundation in the assertion that Saudi students generally hold prejudicial feelings towards their hosts due to differences in culture or religion. In consideration of the factors which impact on student experience, this study questions the notion of initial prejudice, instead suggesting people from this very different culture suspend judgement in order to gain a full experience of their host country. 3) A model for understanding the differing behaviour of people from a seemingly homogenous culture is developed, in order to describe three different types of behaviour, "conservative", "middle" and "open". 4) A model for understanding the relationship between a range of variables which impact upon a Saudi student's experience of friendship building in New Zealand is provided.
