Dynamic pressure measurements of the combustion chamber and air inlet were recorded, while a series of tests using Plexiglas as a fuel were performed. Combustion chamber geometric changes were systematically made in order to help isolate the causal mechanisms. The air inlet system resonant frequency coupling with reattachment zone flow was found to be the major source of pressure oscillations while bypass air injection was the major source of disturbance to the upstream reattachment region of flow. The combustion efficiency of a vitiated air heater was also evaluated using a gas chromatograph to measure unburned fuel in the exhaust. Negligible unburned gaseous fuel existed for all fuel-air ratios and temperatures. (Author).

Testing was done using cylindrically perforated polymethylmethacrylate fuel grains in solid fuel ramjet with 180 deg opposed dumps into a plenum ahead of an axial dump combustor inlet. Bypass flow into the aft mixing chamber was accomplished using two dumps located either 180 deg or 90 deg apart, perpendicular to the centerline. Split inlet feed line lengths into the plenum were varied with no apparent change of the dominant pressure oscillation frequency of approximately 167 Hz for bypass tests. Hot wire measurements indicated that in the short-coupled axial inlet, there were no dominant vortex shedding frequencies in the separation/shear layer or at the reattachment point on the fuel grain wall. The observed pressure oscillation frequency did not appear to be related to vortex shedding from the inlet jet. Coupling of the driving disturbance from bypass flow could possibly be with a longitudinal mode of the combustor or a Helmholtz mode involving the head section plenum. (Author).

The engine is treated in two parts: the inlet-section, containing relatively high speed flow, and the combustion chamber. A linearized analysis of a normal shock exposed to acoustic waves provides the upstream boundary condition. Most of the work reported was concerned with the combustion chamber. A simple model of the steady flow in a dump combustor has been worked out, comprising three regions: the flow of unburnt reactions; the region containing products of combustion; and the recirculation zone. Combustion is assumed to occur in an infinitesimally thin sheet; an infinitesimally thin shear layer separates the recirculation zone from the remainder of the flow field. Acoustic fields in the inlet and the combustion chamber are formed separately and joined at the dump plane to provide a transcendental equation for the computer wave number. Results for the frequencies of oscillations and the pressure distributions compare well with experimental data taken at the Naval Weapons Center, China Lake. Some preliminary results are given for the unsteady behavior of a normal shock wave in a diffuser, calculated with a modified form of a computer program obtained from AFRPL.

The two basic instability modes are 'chugging, ' a low-frequency instability mode which is caused by interaction between the chamber pressure and the injection flow rate fluctuations, and 'screaming, ' a more harmful high-frequency, acoustic instability mode which may lead to burnout of the motor due to increased heat flux. Only two articles on low-frequency instability were found in Soviet open literature. Experimental studies or analyses of high-frequency instability which take into account actual engine operation, i.e., mixing, evaporation, dissociation fuel atomization, etc., were not found in the literature surveyed. However, several theoretical studies were found which deal with highfrequency instability under idealized conditions. The majority of the Soviet studies included in this report deal with the interaction of shock and pressure waves with the flame front. These studies are of high phenomenological interest and are indirectly applicable to combustion stability analysis. (Author).
