Book excerpt: Boundary-layer transition by the sublimation and impact-pressure techniques and force tests have been performed on three Haack-Adams bodies of revolution of fineness ratios 7, 10, and 13 at zero angle of attack for free-stream Mach numbers of 2.00, 2.75, and 4.63 and a range of Reynolds numbers based on model length of 6 to 15 X 10(to the 6 power) with and without a roughness strip. The grit method of inducing turbulence was found to provide for a nearly complete turbulent flow over the models at the lower Mach numbers and higher Reynolds numbers considered in this study while the amount of trip drag was less than 8 percent of the model drag with transition fixed. A method of interpreting sublimation data was discussed and used and the results compared well with the impact-pressure results.

Book excerpt: Experiments carried out in the 12-inch supersonic wind tunnel to investigate the effect of three dimensional roughness elements (spheres) on boundary-layer transition on a 10-degree (apex angle) cone without heat transfer are described. The local Mach number for these tests was 2.71. The data show clearly that the minimum (effective) size of trip required to bring transition to its lowest Reynolds number varies power of the distance from the apex of the cone to the trip. Use of available data at other Mach numbers indicates that the Mach number influence for effective tripping is taken into account by a simple expression. Some remarks concerning the roughness variation for transition on a blunt body are made. Finally, a general criterion is introduced which gives insight to the transition phenomenon and anticipates effects of external and internal disturbances, Mach number transfer.

Book excerpt: The boundary-layer transition on the EXPRESS reentry capsule at transonic and supersonic speeds is studied experimentally by the wind tunnel tests. For the diagnostic of the turbulent transition of the boundary-layer, the China-clay method is used. The experimental results clarify that when the freestream Mach number increases, the transition point moves downstream on the body surface and the distance between the beginning of the transition and its completion to the fully turbulent flow becomes larger. The effects of the freestream Mach number on the location of the boundary-layer transition are described successfully in terms of two non-dimensional quantities, that is, the transition Reynolds number and the local Mach number at the boundary-layer edge. The oil-flow pictures reveal that in the transonic regime, the separation bubble is formed at the junction between the blunt nose and the conical part of the body and therefore the transition begins behind the reattachment point of the separation bubble. The effects of the turbulent transition on the aerodynamic characteristics of the reentry body are investigated by using the technique of the boundary-layer trip and the experimental results show that the aerodynamic characteristics of the EXPRESS reentry vehicle are not sensitive to the boundary-layer transition.

Variables studied include Mach number, Reynolds number, pressure gradients, heat transfer, surface roughness, and angle of attack. The discussion is limited to bodies of revolution because similar reliable data for wings is lacking.

Book excerpt: Here, we present the final technical report on AFOSR Grant F49620-93-0064, Studies Of Hypersonic Boundary Layer Behavior. The grant covered three interrelated research efforts: a study of the structure of hypersonic turbulent boundary layers and shock wave boundary layer interactions, a study of boundary layer transition at supersonic and hypersonic speeds, and the development and application of new optical techniques including filtered Rayleigh scattering and RELIEF to obtain multi-dimensional velocity and density data in the supersonic and hypersonic regimes. The research was performed using the existing facilities in the Applied Physics and Lasers Laboratory and at the Princeton University Gas Dynamics Laboratory. The construction of a new boundary layer facility was also partly supported under this contract. The new facility is designed to operate at Mach numbers from 2 to 8, with a range of Reynolds numbers so that the boundary layer can be laminar or turbulent, at all Mach numbers. It is primarily designed to operate with air (and possibly other gases including nitrogen and SF6) to exploit the new optical techniques and to help isolate specific Mach number and Reynolds number effects. It will be ready for its first trials in May, 1995. (AN).

Book excerpt: These three volumes entitled Advances in Hypersonics contain the Proceedings of the Second and Third Joint US/Europe Short Course in Hypersonics which took place in Colorado Springs and Aachen. The Second Course was organized at the US Air Force Academy, USA in January 1989 and the Third Course at Aachen, Germany in October 1990. The main idea of these Courses was to present to chemists, com puter scientists, engineers, experimentalists, mathematicians, and physicists state of the art lectures in scientific and technical dis ciplines including mathematical modeling, computational methods, and experimental measurements necessary to define the aerothermo dynamic environments for space vehicles such as the US Orbiter or the European Hermes flying at hypersonic speeds. The subjects can be grouped into the following areas: Phys ical environments, configuration requirements, propulsion systems (including airbreathing systems), experimental methods for external and internal flow, theoretical and numerical methods. Since hyper sonic flight requires highly integrated systems, the Short Courses not only aimed to give in-depth analysis of hypersonic research and technology but also tried to broaden the view of attendees to give them the ability to understand the complex problem of hypersonic flight. Most of the participants in the Short Courses prepared a docu ment based on their presentation for reproduction in the three vol umes. Some authors spent considerable time and energy going well beyond their oral presentation to provide a quality assessment of the state of the art in their area of expertise as of 1989 and 1991.

Book excerpt: The experimental results on the laminar-turbulent transition in three-dimensional boundary layers for M> 1 are described. Stationary structures were registered using different methods of flow visualization. The first experimental studies of instability of a three-dimensional boundary layer at supersonic velocities were conducted. Evolution of natural fluctuations in the boundary layer on a swept wing was studied. It was shown that the character of distribution of the mean and fluctuating characteristics of the boundary layer is similar to the case of subsonic velocities. A downstream increase in these disturbances was found in analyzing the spectra of natural fluctuations. It was obtained at M=2, flat the disturbances growth in three-dimensional boundary layer occurs much faster, than in the flat plate case. The increase of the Mach number up to 3.5 extends frequency band of amplifying disturbances and leads to earlier turbulent transition. The results of an experimental study of evolution of controlled disturbances on a swept-wing model for Mach number M=2 are presented. The wave characteristics of traveling waves are obtained. The objective of present work is an experimental study of nonlinear evolution of controlled disturbances on a swept wing supersonic boundary layer.

Book excerpt: The objective of this project is to basic research of stability and transition of hypersonic boundary layer around blunted cone. Next results is obtained: -experimental data on the position of the laminar-turbulent transition in the boundary layer of a cone with different nose bluntness for Mach 6; -experimental data on the characteristics of natural disturbances in the hypersonic boundary layer of a blunted cone for Mach 6; -experimental data on the evolution of artificial disturbances, excited in the hypersonic boundary layer on a blunted cone for Mach 6. Acquired experimental data could be used for validation of numerical techniques. Using of obtained data will help to more accurate prediction of laminar-turbulent transition location and thereby heat fluxes on hypersonic vehicles.

Book excerpt: Boundary-layer transition has been studied on a heated flat plate in an air stream at a Mach number of 2.40 and a length Reynolds number range from 475,000 to 3,930,000. The transition region was investigated at nominal plate temperature levels of 60, 100, 140, 180, and 260 degrees F and depicted in a series of curves of transition Reynolds numbers, based on boundary-layer dimensions and fluid properties evaluated alternatively at free-stream and wall temperatures. The average skin-friction coefficient over the laminar portion of the boundary layer was determined.
