Book excerpt: The effects of a strong adverse pressure gradient on a three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer are studied in an axisymmetric spinning cylinder geometry. Velocity measurements made with a three-component laser Doppler velocimeter include all three mean flow components, all six Reynolds stress components, and all ten triple-product correlations. Reynolds stress diminishes as the flow becomes three-dimensional. Lower levels of shear stress were seen to persist under adverse pressure gradient conditions. This low level of stress was seen to roughly correlate with the magnitude of cross-flow (relative to free stream flow) for this experiment as well as most of the other experiments in the literature. Variations in pressure gradient do not appear to alter this correlation. For this reason, it is hypothesized that a three-dimensional boundary layer is more prone to separate than a two-dimensional boundary layer, although it could not be directly shown here. None of the computations performed with either a Prandtl mixing length, k-epsilon, or a Launder-Reece-Rodi full Reynolds-stress model were able to predict the reduction in Reynolds stress. Book excerpt: The work presented in this thesis was on nominally two-dimensional turbulent boundary layers at zero pressure gradient subjected to high free-stream turbulent intensities of up to 7.9% in preparations for high free-stream turbulence studies on three-dimensional boundary layers. The two-dimensional turbulent flow that will impinge three-dimensional bodies needed to be characterized, before the three-dimensional studies can be made. An active turbulence generator designed to create high free-stream turbulence intensities in the wind tunnel was tested and modified in order to obtain the lowest possible mean flow non-uniformities. A seven-hole pressure probe was used to obtain planes of mean velocity measurements. A three-component state of the art laser-Doppler velocimeter (LDV) was used to obtain mean and fluctuating velocities. Previous high free-stream turbulence studies have been reviewed and are discussed, and some of the previously published data of other authors have been corrected. Based on the measurements obtained with the LDV, it was also determined that the semi-log law of the wall is valid for high free-stream turbulence cases, but with different constants than the ones proposed by Coles, where the constants for the high free-stream cases may be dependent on the turbulence intensity. For the first time, the skin friction coefficient (CO was deduced from the viscous sublayer. The difference between the Utau obtained in the viscous sublayer mean velocity profile and the Utau obtained in the semi-log layer was 1.5%. The skin friction coefficient was determined to increase by 10.5% when the two-dimensional turbulent boundary layer was subjected to high free-stream turbulence effects. Spectral data were compared to the von Karmen and Pope's model spectra; the von Karman spectrum was proven to fit slightly better. Finally the Hancoc-Bradshaw-Blair parameter agreed very well with previously published data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A three dimensional, pressure driven turbulent boundary layer created by an idealized wing-body junction flow is experimentally studied. The body used is a 3 : 2 elliptical nosed NACA 0020 tailed symmetric profile which has a chord length of 30.5 cm (12 inches), maximum thickness of 7.17 cm (2.824 inches), height of 22.9 cm (9.016 inches). The body was sitting on a flat plate. The nominal reference velocity of the flow is 27 m/sec and the Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness at 0.75 chord upstream of the body on the centerline of the tunnel is approx. 5936. The data presented include time-mean static pressure, skin friction magnitude and direction on the wall, as well as the mean velocity and all Reynolds stresses at several stations on a line determined with the mean velocity vector component parallel to the wall in the layer where the normal stress is maximum. The mean velocity and stress data were obtained both with hot-wire (HW) and laser-Doppler-velocimeter (LDV) techniques. The LDV measurement were taken twice due to the differences observed between the HW and LDV data, which is also shown with the present study. This gave a chance to study the uncertainties on the mean velocity and the stresses extensively. Pressure on the bottom plate were obtained with a Scanivalve and an inclined manometer. (SDW).

Book excerpt: Experimental studies of a two and a three-dimensional low speed turbulent boundary layer were conducted on the side wall of the University of Maryland Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel. Preliminary studies in the two-dimensional boundary layer indicated that the flow was nonuniform on the 46 in. wide test wall. The nonuniform boundary layer is characterized by transverse variations in the wall shear stress and is primarily caused by nonuniformities in the inlet damping screens. Over the 15 in. span of a special transverse device, the local skin friction coefficient varied (at discrete locations) + or - 9% about a mean. Transverse variations in the flow velocity, yaw, pitch and turbulence intensity were also measured in the boundary layer at set distances above the wall. Measurements with a pitch probe revealed the presence of a vortex-like flow to exist above the edge of the boundary layer at two locations along the 15 in. traverse line.

The test configuration was a flat/finned plat arrangement with sharp leading edge fins having 4, 6 and 8 deg incidence relative to the free stream. The flat plate laminar boundary layer had thickness between 1.1 and 2.2 mm depending on test conditions. The unit Reynolds numbers used were 1.2 million and 2.4 million. Experimental surface data represented as surface flow visualizations and pressure distributions are presented for all test conditions. All tests were carried out at a nominal free stream Mach number of 2.25 and under approximately adiabatic wall conditions. The experimental results indicate that extended separation occurs even for the smallest wedge incidence, i.e., for a pressure ratio of 1.27 and that the extent of upstream influence is much larger in this 3D interaction than in comparable 2D interactions. Preliminary theoretical investigations show that an integral method is not suited for the study of the present interaction. The new implicit corrected viscosity method for solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations can yield convergence speeds of order unity under suitable chosen conditions. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the Eighth Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows held at the Technical University of Munich, 9-11 September 1991. The first of these biennial international symposia was held at the Pennsylvania State Uni versity, USA, in 1977; subsequent symposia have been held at Imperial College, London, England; the University of California, Davis, USA; the University of Karlsruhe, Ger many; Cornell University, Ithaca, USA; the Paul Sabatier University, Toulouse, France; and Stanford University, California, USA. The purpose of this series of symposia is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of new developments in the field of turbulence, especially as related to shear flows of importance in engineering and geo physics. From the 330 extended abstracts submitted for this symposium, 145 papers were presented orally and 60 as posters. Out of these, we have selected twenty-four papers for inclusion in this volume, each of which has been revised and extended in accordance with the editors' recommendations. The following four theme areas were selected after consideration of the quality of the contributions, the importance of the area, and the selection made in earlier volumes: - wall flows, - separated flows, - compressibility effects, - buoyancy, rotation, and curvature effects. As in the past, each section corresponding to the above areas begins with an introduction by an authority in the field that places the individual contributions in context with one another and with related research.
