Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this investigation was to study the conditions of brittle-fracture initiation in low-carbon steel. An elastic-plastic stress analysis was developed from which the state of stress along the minimum section of a notched specimen could be determined as a function of the average applied stress and the yield stress. A series of tests on plate-type specimens, with the same notch configuration as that used in the stress analysis, provided experimental values of average fracture stress under various test conditions. Application of the elastic-plastic stress analysis to the experimental results provided a theoretical prediction of the state of stress at the instant location of fracture initation and also an indication of the position of the elastic-plastic boundary at fracture. It was found that the stress condition necessary for brittle fracture initiation, in the mild-steel specimens studied, was achieved when the maximum tensile stress reached a critical value of approximately 246,000 psi. Book excerpt: Interpretive studies based on available information of the low-stress brittle fracture behavior of mild steel are made to suggest additional guides for the evaluation of the fracture resistance of fabricated steel structures. An experimental investigation was conducted to investigate the influence of welding on the yield behavior of metal from the thermally affected zone in the vicinity of a weld. The study suggests that low-stress cleavage initiation at service temperatures can be associated with a marked local reduction of critical fracture stress, that residual stresses can be responsible for the propagation through sound metal of fractures initiated in damaged material, and that the critical fracture stress and fracture mechanics approaches are equivalent when applied to cleavage propagation and arrest. The 2D Rousselier model, the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model and the cohesive zone model (CZM) wereadopted to predict the crack propagation of thick compact tension (CT)specimens. Advantages and disadvantages of the three mentioned modelsare discussed. The cohesive zone model is suggested as it is easy to usefor scientists & engineers because the CZM has less model parametersand can be used to simulate arbitrary crack propagation. The resultsshown in this thesis help to evaluate the fracture behavior of a metallicmaterial. A 3D optical deformation measurement system (ARAMIS) andthe synchrotron radiation-computed laminography (SRCL) techniquereveal for the first time the damage evolution on the surface of the sampleand inside a thin sheet specimen obtained from steel S355. Damageevolution by void initiation, growth and coalescence are visualized in2D and 3D laminographic images. Two fracture types, i.e., a flat crackpropagation originated from void initiation, growth and coalescenceand a shear coalescence mechanism are visualized in 2D and 3D imagesof laminographic data, showing the complexity of real fracture. Inthe dissertation, the 3D Rousselier model is applied for the first timesuccessfully to predict different microcrack shapes before shear cracksarise by defining the finite elements in front of the initial notch withinhomogeneous f0-values. The influence of the distribution of inclusionson the fracture shape is also discussed. For the analyzed material, ahomogeneous distribution of particles in the material provides thehighest resistance to fracture.

Book excerpt: The aim of this program has been to simplify the complex problem of fracture of metals by a systems approach: for a given type or mode of failure, the basic simple parameters and mechanisms controlling failure are identified, these are treated individually by experiment and analysis, and the individual results are combined into a description of the failure process yielding predictions which can be checked by experiment. Except for the last portion of the program, the experiments were conducted on center cracked steel foils. In the earlier stages of work the analysis concentrated on predictions of the development of plasticity with loading and the conditions at which crack propagation begins. The work was then directed toward the problem of rapid crack propagation basing the analysis on previous results. The work has yielded a detailed description of crack propagation under plane stress conditions both in the form of an analytic model and experimental observations of crack speeds. A method for quantitatively measuring the energy absorption rate of a material during crack propagation has been tested. This method holds promise as a way of characterizing the intrinsic resistance to unstable crack propagation. Some of the concepts and methods developed have been applied to the very complex problem of calculating crack speeds in pipelines. (Author).
