This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates experimentally the performance of oil-water separation using two methods; gravity separation and electrolysis separation. Conventional oil-water gravity separation tested against numerical and categorical factors are based on a statistical method called the analysis of variance. Therefore, a factorial design experiment is conducted where each factor has a high and low level respectively as follows: water flow rate 4 gal/min and 1 gal/min, oil flow rate 4 gal/min and 1 gal/min, temperature 35°C and 25°C, number of compartments (2) and (1), and type of separator inlet deflector plate and elbow. These factors are combined in one correlation which describes the process. The developed correlation is able to account 98% of data variability with a 97% success of data prediction which indicates that the correlation describes the operation perfectly. The electrolysis cell separation is conducted using one factor at the time method. It is found that increasing temperature, voltage, and (NaCl) salt increases the performance of oil-water separation, while increasing the pH or the volumetric oil to water ratio acts adversely.
Book Synopsis Experimental Investigation of Rotating-drum Separators for Liquid-metal MHD Applications by :
Download or read book Experimental Investigation of Rotating-drum Separators for Liquid-metal MHD Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past several years, Argonne National Laboratory has been active in the development of closed-cycle two-phase-flow MHD power systems. One of the key components in such systems is an effective and efficient gas-liquid separator-diffuser. On the basis of an assessment of present technology, it was decided to study the characteristics of a rotating drum type of separator, and a multitask research and development program was initiated within the overall liquid-metal MHD research program. The first task, now completed, centered on the investigation of single-phase flow (liquid) deposited by a flow nozzle on the inner surface of freely-rotating cylinders or drums of 423 mm and 282 mm diam. The tests were designed to study the recovery of energy in the liquid layer deposited on the drum; the torque transmitted to the drum by the liquid as the result of shear stress between the liquid and the drum surface; the characteristics of the liquid layer; and the effects of drum size, nozzle shape and orientation, and nozzle velocity. The test results showed that a stable liquid film was formed on the drum and that the kinetic energy of the liquid layer was high enough to be potentially useful in two-phase-flow MHD power systems.

Book Synopsis Investigation of the Use of a Vortex Flow to Separate Oil from an Oil-water Mixture by : United Aircraft Corporation. Research Laboratories

This book was released on 1970 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of using a vortex separator as a component of an oil spill clean-up system. This device separates the oil from an oil-water mixture in a continuous manner and provides individual outlets for the oil and the water. The study reported herein consisted of two parts: (1) an experimental investigation of a laboratory-scale model vortex separator to determine its performance throughout a variety of geometric and flow conditions, and (2) an analytic evaluation of a full-scale vortex separator including the necessary pumps and prime movers. The results of the tests showed that it is possible to capture greater than 85 percent of the injected oil and that the captured oil can contain less than 15 percent water. Degradation in the vortex separator performance occurs whenever attempts are made to remove the oil at flow rates greater or less than the injected oil flow rate. Based on average residence time, criteria are given for design of a full-scale vortex separator. The analytic evaluation of full-scale vortex separators included studies to determine the sizes, weights, and costs of separators, pumps and motors (or other prime movers) for volume flow rates between 1000 and 100,000 gpm. The results of these studies showed that the components necessary are all commercially available. (Author).
