Book excerpt: Tales about treacherous Jesuits and scheming popes are an important and pervasive part of European culture. They belong to a set of ideas, images, and practices that, when grouped under the label anti-Catholicism, represent a phenomenon that can be traced back to the Reformation. Anti-Catholic movements and sentiments crossed boundaries between European countries, contributing to the early modern consolidation of national identities. In the nineteenth century, secularist movements adopted and transformed confessional criticism in a new internationalist dimension that was articulated across the whole Western world. A variety of liberal, conservative, secular, Protestant, and other forces gave shape to this counter-image, taking on the function of a pattern from which one’s own ideals and beliefs could be chiselled out. The contributions to this volume show how different national contexts affected the proliferation of anti-Catholic messages over the course of four centuries of European history, and demonstrate that anti-Catholicism constituted a powerful European cross-cultural phenomenon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This books asks you to set aside your preconceptions and confirmation bias and simply examine what the Scriptures say, especially in prophecy. If it is too difficult for you to reconsider mainstream understandings of what the Scripture says about things such as, the doctrine of the Trinity, the corruption of the Church, whether or not Muhammad was a prophet, etc., then this book is not for you. If you are willing to look and study, then this book can serve as a tool in understanding Bible prophecy. It begins with the Babylonian exile, then continues through the rise of the Persians, Greeks, and Romans, the coming of the Messiah, the rise and corruption of the Church, the rise of Islam, the reemergence of the corrupt Church, the return of Jesus, and the establishment of God's kingdom. The prophecies serve as a warning to those who follow the traditions of the Church instead of Scripture. However, the primary mission of the prophets wasn't to make predictions, but to provide guidance. I believe the prophecies indicate that the church corrupted the teachings of Jesus, and what is preached today bears little resemblance what he preached. The 17th and 18th chapters of Revelation describe it as the Great Whore Babylon, from which this book gets its title. An open-minded study of Revelation also seems to indicate that God gave Muhammad a message to get the Church to repent of its blasphemies and worship only one person as God. It seems to indicate that Protestantism, aided by America, will form an image to the beast (Roman Church) and will join the fight against the followers of God. This book goes into great detail in the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation and the rest of Scripture in order to let the Scripture do the interpreting. One should always let the Bible provide the meanings of symbols and interpret accordingly. I make every effort to only draw interpretations from Scripture, instead of reading interpretations into the text. In fact, I prefer to simply quote the Scripture and let it speak for itself. However, I don't make any kind of claim that the contents of this book were revealed to me directly from God. You should place your faith in the Scriptures and only accept the points that you can clearly see the Scriptures saying. 2nd expanded edition - black and white

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Wyatt is the finest English poet between Chaucer and the Elizabethans. Many poems have been wrongly attributed to him, however, and the authenticity of different versions of his lyrics has been a matter of dispute. Richard Harrier makes a significant contribution both by establishing accurate texts and by determining the canon itself. The only solid foundation for the Wyatt canon is his personal copybook, the Egerton MS, here reproduced in a diplomatic text. The apparatus records all changes within the manuscript and all contemporary variants; explanatory notes are provided. This volume, which includes a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the sources, will stand as the ultimate authority for the text and canon of Wyatt's poems.

Book excerpt: From a gripping new author comes the haunting story of Calla Gentry, a trial consultant determined to discover the truth about her sister's brutal rape. A trial consultant in Tucson, Arizona, Calla Gentry devotes her time and energy to victims in civil cases rather than criminal trials. The rape and near murder of her sister Amaryllis has done much more than affect Calla's career; she hides behind locked doors and jumps at shadows, a veritable victim by proxy after Amaryllis is left in a coma following a failed suicide attempt. When Calla is assigned against her will to the trial of Raymond Cates, a wealthy landowner's son accused of rape and first degree murder, she cannot help but note the parallels between the crime he stands accused of and her sister's assault. Determined to uncover the truth, Calla begins an investigation of Cates and the events of that fateful night. But things are seldom what they seem-and her investigation leads Calla to buried lies and a whole new world of violent rage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Verse-by-verse explanations with a literal translation Shouldn't a Bible commentary clarify what God's Word actually says? Going beyond questions of authorship, date, sources, and historicity, respected linguist and teacher Gundry offers a one-volume exposition of the New Testament that focuses on what is most useful for preaching, teaching, and individual study--what the biblical text really means. Providing interpretive observations in a "breezy" style that's easy to read and adaptable for oral use in pulpit or classroom presentations, Gundry directs his book to an evangelical audience. His crisp translation of the New Testament inserts various phrasings of passages in brackets, allowing for smooth transition from original text to alternative and contemporary readings. SAMPLE TEXT OF TRANSLATION JOHN'S PREDICTING A MORE POWERFUL BAPTIZER THAN HE (Mark 1:1-8) 1:1-3: The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, God's Son, according as it's written in Isaiah the prophet, "Behold, I'm sending my messenger before your face [= ahead of you], who'll pave your way [= the road you'll travel], [the messenger who is] the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.'" Pastors, Sunday school teachers, small-group leaders, and laypeople will welcome Gundry's non-technical explanations and clarifications. And Bible students at all levels will appreciate his sparkling interpretations of the NT Scriptures. A trustworthy guide for anybody wanting to delve deeper into God's Word. SAMPLE TEXT OF COMMENTS "Gospel" means "good news." Jews would associate this good news with Isaiah 52:7. Non-Jews would think of the good news of an emperor's accession to power, birthday, visit to a city, military victory, or bringing of prosperity to the empire. But Mark's good news has to do with the salvation and victory brought by Jesus over evil in all its demonic and physical forms. "The gospel of Jesus Christ" therefore means "the gospel about Jesus Christ" and refers to a proclaimed message ("the voice of one crying out"), not a book (though because books like Mark's contain that proclaimed message, the term came to refer to those books in the capitalized form of "Gospels" to distinguish them from the message, kept uncapitalized as "gospel").
