Research has indicated that yoga may promote a number of positive psychological and physical health outcomes. Purpose: To evaluate the influence of Yoga on health related variables (cognitive flexibility, quality of life, sleep quality, and perceived stress) in a community sample of adult yoga practitioners Methods: Participants (50 women and 3 men) were recruited from yoga studios and were administered the Multicultural Quality of Life Index (MQLI), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), The Pittsburgh sleep Quality Index (PSQI), The Cognitive Flexibility Scale (CFS), The Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI), and were assessed on their frequency and intensity of yoga practice using The Timeline Followback Calendar. Results: Frequency and intensity of yoga practice were correlated with cognitive flexibility and improved sleep. Differences on health variables were not found between those who solely practice and those who practice and engage in additional exercise. Differences were not found between health variables and the type of yoga practice. Regression analyses indicated that the practice of yoga was predictive of cognitive flexibility scores with additional variability attributable to perceived stress scores. Conclusions: The regular practice of yoga may improve overall cognitive flexibility and improve sleep quality regardless of the type of practice or whether the individual engages in exercise.

Due to the unique nature of spinal cord injury (SCI), this was a case study with one participant. For 5 weeks the subject practiced a standardized yoga routine three times a week with a yoga teacher, receiving private instruction. Interview questions were asked before and after the intervention to document the participant's quality of life. Each week, the subject completed a modified SF-36 questionnaire as well as Cohen's Perceived Stress Survey. Perceived pain and perceived stress were the two primary variables monitored in the study. The results of this study demonstrated a slight reduction in perceived stress, a reduction in perceived pain, and an improvement in overall quality of life. Additionally, the subject increased her strength significantly from the beginning to the end of the study. Based on the findings in this study, it appears that a regular adapted yoga routine is beneficial for paraplegic individuals.

In 2019, there were 268,200 new cases of female breast cancer. While the incidence of breast cancer rises, newer treatment strategies and earlier diagnosis have led to a five-year survival rate of 89.9%. Despite these advances, the diagnosis of breast cancer represents a psychological burden of continuing stress. This psychological burden on an increasingly larger population of women has led to the investigation of interventions which can decrease stress and improve quality of life. The purpose of this research is to investigate if yoga decreases perceived stress and anxiety; thereby, increasing perceived health among breast cancer survivors. An anonymous online survey was sent to members of online breast cancer support groups using links to REDCap, a secure online web application. The survey examined the amount of participation in yoga, yoga dosage, and its relationship to perceived stress, anxiety, and self-reported health. Stress was measured using the Perceived Stress Scale, anxiety was measured using the State Trait Anxiety Scale. The results of this survey of 35 breast cancer survivors indicated that the amount of their yoga participation was high with an average of 948 cumulative life-time hours. Categorizing yoga dosage results was an interesting research challenge since the range was so large. A systematic approach was used. Participants were divided into high and low yoga dosage groups based on how the data were distributed within the sample. Methods: It is a prospective randomized control trail.88 female nursing professionals of age 33.77±3.44 years from a tertiary care hospital of South India were randomized in to yoga group (YG) (n=44; 31.45 ± 3.47 years) and control [exercise] group (CG) (n=44; 32.75 ± 3.71). YG was intervened with Integrated Yoga Therapy Module (IYTM) practices, one hour per day, five days week for six weeks. CG practiced a set of physical exercises for the same duration. All subjects were assessed using Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) for pain, Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) for functional disability, Fear Avoidance Belief Questionnaire- physical (FABQpa), Fear Avoidance Belief Questionnaire - work (FABQw), State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI), and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Heart Rate Variability (HRV) [low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF), LF/HF ratio] and WHO quality of life questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF) at baseline and end of six week intervention. Data were analyzed by paired samples t test and independent samples t test for within group and between group comparisons respectively by using SPSS version 22.

Book excerpt: This study will attempt to integrate mindfulness meditation and yoga to take advantage of the benefits of both interventions and the popularity of yoga, proposing a pilot of a mindful yoga intervention. The second purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of mindful yoga at increasing mindfulness, as measured by the Mindfulness Awareness Attention Scale, and to assess mindfulness as the mechanism of change through which well-being is enhanced. One hundred adults, who are yoga and meditation beginners and between the ages of 35 and 45, would be recruited from the community to participate in this study. The study utilizes a walking group control and a mindful yoga intervention group. Before treatment condition effects would be assessed, a one-way ANOVA would be conducted with the pre-test outcome scores as the dependent variable and treatment group as the independent variable to assess potential pre-test differences. It is not expected that the two groups will differ significantly at baseline, so it is expected that the ANOVA will not be significant. In order to investigate possible differences between participants on the five dependent variables (satisfaction with life, perceived stress, blood pressure, medical symptom checklist, mindfulness awareness) a repeated measures MANOVA would be conducted with one between-subjects factor and one-within subjects factor. The present study predicts that increases in mindfulness will mediate the effect of treatment on perceived stress, satisfaction with life, physical symptoms, and blood pressure (measures of well-being). In order to analyze this effect, change scores will be created for the mindfulness and the well-being outcome measures for the change from pretest to posttest. While there is limited research supporting this integration, both yoga and mindfulness interventions have shown to be beneficial for the reduction of stress and the enhancement of various measures of well-being (Grossman et al., 2004; Baer, 2003). It is predicted that mindfulness will mediate the relationship between treatment and increase in measures of well-being. Support of this hypothesis indicates that the mindful yoga intervention will likely increase mindfulness, and it will provide further empirical evidence that mindfulness is the therapeutic factor responsible for enhancing well-being.
