Book excerpt: Although a relationship between the constructs of teacher efficacy and school culture has been suggested in the literature (e.g., Beard, Hoy, & Hoy, 2010; Deemer, 2004; Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk Hoy, 2001), no studies have actually examined the relationship directly. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship among the components of school culture and the factors of teachers' sense of efficacy. The perceptions of Michigan middle school teachers (n = 387) were obtained using an online survey via random cluster sampling. The survey included a professional demographic survey, the School Culture Survey (SCS) (Saphier & King, 1985 as modified by Edwards, Green & Lyons, 1996), and the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) (Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk Hoy, 2001). Correlations were used to examine the relationships among the TSES factors (Efficacy in Student Engagement, Instructional Strategies, and Classroom Management) and the SCS factors (Teacher Professionalism and Goal Setting, Professional Treatment by Administration, and Teacher Collaboration). The study showed weak significant positive relationships between SCS and TSES in 13 of the 16 correlations conducted. All of the relationships determined in the study were found to have small effect sizes. The greatest correlation values occurred between the SCS factors and teacher efficacy in student engagement. In addition, the SCS factor of professional treatment by administration had the highest correlations with each of the factors of TSES. Finally, teacher efficacy in classroom management did not have significant relationships with two of the three SCS factors or the SCS composite scores.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate which teachers' characteristics have an impact on teachers' sense of efficacy. In addition, the relationship between mathematics and science fifth grade teachers' sense of efficacy and student achievement was examined. Two characteristics related to teachers were examined: teachers' years of teaching experience and teachers' highest degree. Participants included 62 mathematics and science teachers from three school districts in Northwest Arkansas. When comparing fifth grade mathematics and science teachers' efficacy beliefs based on their highest degree, a significant difference in teachers' efficacy beliefs was found based on their degrees. Teachers with a Bachelor degree have higher total efficacy than teachers who hold Master's degrees. Moreover, an investigation to determine if there is a difference in mathematics and science teachers' efficacy beliefs in the three subscale of teachers' efficacy (for classroom management, for student engagement, and for instructional strategies) revealed a significant difference in teachers' efficacy for two of the three constructs. However, when examining teachers' sense of efficacy based on their teaching experience, no differences in teachers' efficacy were found. A correlation was conducted and the results indicated that there was no significant relationship between fifth grade teachers' sense of efficacy and students' achievement in the benchmark test in mathematics and science. The recommendations from this study should be used to inform other scholars and administrators of the importance of teachers' sense of efficacy in order to improve students' achievement gains.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study was designed to collect data to determine the specific characteristics (gender, level and area of degree status, certification status, pedagogical training, gender, number of years of teaching experience, number of years teaching at the current school, and courses currently taught) of language arts teachers at Florida's low-performing public high schools and compare these characteristics to teachers' sense of efficacy (the extent to which teachers' believe they have the ability to bring about changes in student achievement independent of the student's background, behaviors, or motivation level). A total of 615 teachers representing 84 schools in 36 districts participated in the study. Teachers completed a researcher-created survey questionnaire and the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale Long (Tschannen-Moran and Hoy, 2001). The data were collected and analyzed using descriptive and multiple regression statistics. The majority of the respondents meet the minimum requirements of highly qualified teachers as defined by NCLB. However, only 37% of responding language arts teachers at Florida's low-performing public high schools have degrees in English education, and only 15% of responding reading teachers have degrees in reading or reading education. Additionally, the majority of the responding teachers have been only been teaching at the school site for five or fewer years. Although the majority of responding teachers reported moderate to high sense of classroom management and instructional practice efficacy, over 43% reported low sense of student engagement efficacy, suggesting the teachers do not believe they possess the skills or knowledge necessary to engage students in learning. The study suggests that improving student achievement for our lowest-performing students may require more than providing students with highly qualified teachers defined by NCLB. Districts and schools must examine more closely the characteristics of highly effective teachers in order to recruit and retain teachers who can truly impact student achievement for students who have previously demonstrated a lack of success. Additionally, schools would benefit from professional development designed to provide teachers with classroom strategies that engage students in learning and which helps develop a school-wide literacy culture reflecting high expectations for student achievement.

This study was a quantitative, correlational design. The population of interest was multicultural public school educators. The data analysis was related to each of the research questions and hypotheses using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) to correlate teacher self-efficacy using the Teacher's Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) and New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJ ASK) for student language arts performance. The convenience sample included 41, third through eighth grade teachers and represented approximately 800, third through eighth grade students. The results of the study described no significant positive relationship between teacher self-efficacy and student language arts performance in the multicultural population in New Jersey public schools. The implication of this study included identifying what correlates with student language arts performance. Teachers and administrators have to identify what correlates with student language arts performance in the multicultural schools of New Jersey.

Furthermore, studies indicate that the leadership behaviors of the principal can influence the school culture and have a direct impact on teacher motivation and self-efficacy. This study sought to determine if a relationship exists between certain behaviors of administrators and a teacher's self-efficacy and motivation. The study used a correlational design using The Teacher Motivation & Job Satisfaction Survey (TMJSS), The Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES), and the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI). There were 72 high school certified teachers within the First District RESA in south Georgia who participated in this study. Results of a multiple regression analysis suggested that there was a significant predictive relationship between the combination of leadership behaviors and teacher motivation. However, the results suggested that there was not a significant predictive relationship between the combination of leadership behaviors and teacher self-efficacy. Future research recommendations include replication studies in other high schools and focus on separating specific leadership behaviors that showed the most influence, such as model the way, inspire a shared vision, and enable others to act.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between teacher efficacy, years of teaching experience, and grade level taught in three school districts in north Mississippi. The study used a mixed method research design that included a QUAN[arrow right]qual process for data analysis. As part of the design, quantitative data collection was the priority method for the study followed by qualitative data collection to continue to explore the results from the quantitative section. For the quantitative portion of the study, participants included 123 elementary, middle, and high school teachers who completed the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale to measure teacher efficacy. For the qualitative portion of the study, participants in the study included six principals who completed interviews to clarify information obtained from the quantitative section of the study which evaluated teacher efficacy from the leadership perspective. The data analysis for the study included a 2-way ANOVA. Analysis results showed that there was no significant difference between teacher efficacy, years of teaching experience, and grade level taught. In addition, there was no significant interaction between the two independent variables, years of teaching experience and grade levels taught. The study did reveal, however, significance approaching in the area of grade level taught. Further analysis indicated that the difference in teacher efficacy scores for elementary and high school teachers was approaching significance. As a result, the qualitative portion of the study was followed by completing interviews with elementary and high school principals to explore this finding in more detail.
