The various stages can be divided into the early, middle, and late adolescence marked by significant changes in development as well as in behaviour. Adolescence is a period of extreme vulnerability to risk-taking behaviour due to the complex interaction of senses in context to immature and uncontrollable behavioural abilities typical in this developmental period. Apart from the hormonal changes that mark the beginning of puberty, various factors can affect the emotional status of an adolescent. During this stage, societal norms can cause high disapproval among adolescents and can give rise to risky health behaviours in them. Moreover, academic stress and peer pressure to excel can also affect their emotional well-being as peers play an important role in the emotional and social development of adolescents. Relationships also tend to shape the emotional status of adolescents. During puberty, family relationships undergo reorganization, as teens want independence. This tends to shift them to friendships and social interactions where they value the trust, support, and closeness experienced in romantic relationships. Therefore, the type of environment that family offers plays a crucial role in the emotional development of an adolescent. Therefore, emotional imbalances can make adolescents vulnerable to one of the most crippling disorders called depression. It is one of the major causes of morbidity among adolescents across the world prone to suicide ideation. Academic Stress, Family Environment and Self Esteem as Predictors of Depression and Suicide Ideation 2 Aristotle (1941) described the adolescent stage as being passionate and at the same time divulging in impulsions. Adolescence marks the development of selfcontrol and the capacity to make vital life decisions while transitioning from childhood to adulthood. Plato (1953) described adolescent boys as easily excitable and highly argumentative. Mohanty and Mohanty (1997) explained that adolescence in India is considered as a phase that is difficult to define based on a particular definition of age. Kundu and Basu (1998) have labelled this age of adolescence as being important as this is the period where there is psychological and physical development apart from continuous mental development. The age group for adolescence can be between 11 years to 18 years for females and 12 years to 18 years for males. However, there are other theorists like Mascarenhas (1999) who have classified the age of adolescence between 12 to 20 years and also adds that delayed adolescence can go up to the age of 21 years and in some cases 25 years. He further divides the period of adolescence into three stages: early adolescence falls in the age group of 10 to 12 years; middle adolescence ranges between 12 to 16 years, and late adolescence falls in the age group between 16 years to 19 years. Chandrasekhar (2000) explains adolescence as a period of anxiety and adjustment with the changes that occur at that age. Many factors like family problems and their actions may trigger them towards depression and resort to drugs as a means of escaping from depression and anxiety. Das (2000) in his article said that the term adolescence is derived from the Latin word "adolescere" which translates as "to grow". If individuals fail to achieve their goals due to low self-efficacy, maladaptive perfectionism or depressive style of attribution, either curbed by family or society, they experience high levels of stress that contribute to psychological distress and play an important role in the development of various types of psychological disorders, such as anxiety, depression, mood disorders or various physical problems. In this context, the suicide rate is a critical indicator of the social and psychological condition. Consequently, suicide has always been a topic of considerable interest in different geographical areas of the world, because an analysis of the suicide rate of young adults worldwide may reveal something of their well-being. Suicide is such an enigma that it's unclear why so many teenagers and young adults choose to take their own lives. Thousand of books have tried to answer why people murder themselves. To sum up in three words: "to stop pain." As Shneidman (1998) had put it "the author of suicide is pain". Often, as in chronic or terminal illness, this pain is physical; more often, it is mental, triggered by a myriad of problems. In any case, suicide is not an accidental or pointless act, but an important, if extreme, solution. Suicide offers a permanent fix to a temporary problem. In the historical perspective, no human society or time in recorded history has undoubtedly existed in which the epidemic of 'suicidal act' was non-existent (Latha, Bhat & D'Souza, 1996).

Book excerpt: "Recent studies have suggested that mattering may influence both self-esteem and depression, and the perception of not mattering can lead to suicide ideation, attempts, or completion. When young people perceive they matter to those in their social environment, that sense of mattering can act as a protective factor. Existing research supports the notion that mattering is salient to adolescent development and, importantly, potentially malleable which could make it a prevention/intervention factor. The current study endeavored to identify contributing factors to adolescent perceived mattering and to test the Theory of Mattering in an adolescent population when predicting mental health outcomes. A secondary analysis on a large adolescent sample (n=6,343) collected in a mid-Atlantic state was conducted. Data were analyzed through a Hierarchical Multiple Regression and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test the Theory of Mattering and to better understand the key variables that contribute to the perception of mattering. Findings support family, school, and peer factors significantly contribute to mattering and the Theory of Mattering held when empirically tested, and significantly predicted both depression and suicidal ideation. The study provides support for several keyways in which public health professionals can bolster adolescent environments to increase perceived mattering and promote the best possible health outcomes for young people."--Boise State University ScholarWorks.

Book excerpt: This study examined several competing models to determine how specific anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms and negative affectivity are related to suicidal ideation. Past research has identified a relation between generalized anxiety and suicidal ideation, which was accounted for by depression (Greene, Chorpita, & Austin, in press); however this research has not explained the relation of negative affect and suicidal ideation. The first model suggested that negative affect leads to the development of social anxiety, generalized anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and that these anxiety symptoms lead to the development of depressive symptoms, which subsequently leads to suicidal ideation. The second model suggested that generalized anxiety symptoms lead to the development of both depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. Participants were 176 children aged 7 to 18 seen in an outpatient clinic in Hawaii. The hypothesized model initially proved to be a good fit. The alternative model provided a better fit for the data. In this model generalized anxiety symptoms mediated the relation between negative affectivity, and depressive symptoms; and between social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive anxiety symptoms and depressive symptoms. Depressive symptoms fully mediated between generalized anxiety and suicidal ideation, but not social anxiety. Additionally, depressive symptoms partially mediated the relation between negative affect and suicidal ideation in the alternative model.

The psychosocial predictors, along with hopelessness and non-suicidal injury (NSSI), have not been studied properly before. Therefore, there is a need to address these issues. The objective of the study was to ascertain the psychosocial and clinical features predicting suicide and NSSI in adolescents with major depression. Increased number of suicidality and impaired family function at entry is autonomously connected with a suicidal attempt. NSSI are connected at base line and apply additive effect on likelihood, one keeping on through treatment period. Poor family functions, as well as family problems and social problems, were the causative agents for adolescent,Äôs high suicidality and NSSI. A history of NSSI treatment is a clinical marker for suicidality. The previous suicidal attempts should be evaluated in depressed juvenile patients as indicators of future suicidal intent and behavior. Both suicidal and NSSI adolescents during the therapy and after treatment endure to be depressed when they are engaged in study. Major causes of suicide among our study participants were lost friend(s), drug abuse, living alone, disturbed parental marriage, sexual abuse, and other domestic problems.

Book excerpt: Interpersonal aspects of perfectionism, particularly perfectionistic self-presentation, have been identified as specific vulnerability factors in the development of depressive disorders during the early adolescent years. The Perfectionistic Social Disconnect Model (PSDM) offers a theoretical framework explaining the relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation (PSP) and depressive disorders. The PSDM suggests that perfectionistic self-presentation leads to depressive symptoms indirectly through interpersonal problems and social disconnection. While previous studies have supported the hypothesized role of social disconnection as a mediator in the relation between perfectionistic self-presentation and suicidal ideation, no studies have explored the role that interpersonal problems play in the model. Furthermore, the generalizability of the model has not been established for community and ethnic minority samples. The present study addresses these gaps by more fully evaluating the PSDM, including the hypothesized interpersonal problems components, as indicated by symptoms of social anxiety, and the social disconnection components, as indicated by loneliness, with depressive symptoms as the outcome variable. The sample includes 289 ethnic minority youth in the 5th, 6th, and 7th grades in three public middle schools in the Chicago area. Mediational analyses show that, as predicted, social anxiety explains the relationship between both PSP and loneliness and PSP and depression. Moreover, results indicate that loneliness mediates the relation between PSP and depression. Support for serial mediation was also found, suggesting that the relationship between PSP and youth depression is mediated sequentially through both social anxiety and loneliness. The serial mediation model, however, was only supported for the Latino subsample, and not for the African American subsample, as revealed by exploratory analyses. These present findings indicate that different ethnic groups may be differentially affected by PSP. Findings also suggest that social anxiety may be an important target in the prevention of depressive disorders in adolescence.
