Using Pearson Product Moment correlations, two separate Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), and Step-wise Regression analyses, respectively, several variables had significant statistical and practical relationships. There were differences among the study variables based on each of the demographic variables (i.e., gender, ethnicity, seasonal status, year-in-school, playing status, and division level) and in holistic wellness variables based on other study variables. More specifically, the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS; Brewer, Van Raalte, and Linder, 1993) was developed to assess the psychological benefits and risks associated with athletic identity. Much of the previous literature has examined these benefits and risks in Division I student-athletes. The goal of this study was to explore the relationship between athletic identity and well-being in Division III student-athletes, a generally understudied population. An additional aim of the study was to determine if participation in non-athletic activities (campus involvement) positively impacted well-being in Division III student-athletes. The results indicated a significant relationship between athletic identity and well-being. Furthermore, the interaction of campus involvement, athletic identity, and well-being was determined to not be significant. Clinical implications, limitations and strengths to the study, and future directions are discussed. Book excerpt: The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) subscribes to the principle of intercollegiate athlete well-being (Article 2.2) which includes health and safety (Article 2.2.3). However, intercollegiate athletes, particularly those competing in arguably the most competitive level of intercollegiate athletics (i.e., NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision [FBS]), are exposed to unique stressors which may compromise their well-being. One dimension which has been received less frequent investigation in the context of athlete welfare is that of spirituality. In lieu of the unique intercollegiate athletic environment and stressors, it is critical to investigate the relationships between the spiritually-related characteristics, specifically religiosity, resiliency, and perceived stress to gain a holistic understanding of athlete wellness. This study employed survey methodology by emailing intercollegiate athletes competing in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) (N = 6,950). Athletes' emails were gathered from their respective university's online public directory. Each intercollegiate athlete was individually emailed inviting him/her to participate in the study. Religiosity was measured using the Duke Religion Index, resiliency was measured with the Brief Resilience Scale, and perceived stress was measured using the Perceived Stress Scale. Additional independent variables social support, athletic identity, and resiliency were measured to provide context to the results. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was utilized to analyze the relationships between religiosity, resiliency, social support, athletic identity, and perceived stress among SEC athletes based on the theoretical frameworks proposed by Williams and Andersen (1998) and Wiese-Bjornstal, Smith, Shaffer, and Morrey (1998). Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and SEM techniques revealed good model fit among respondents (n = 646; CMin = 1474.34 at 724 df; CFI = 0.949, RMSEA = 0.040, pclose = 1.00). Specific relationships comprising the model are discussed in the manuscript. Results from this study provide context for offering resources intended to meet the holistic needs of intercollegiate athletes and help them effectively manage life stress and life transitions. Athletic administrators and coaches are encouraged to incorporate a spiritual health advisor, such as a sport chaplain, within their athlete well-being model.

Each of these constructs has previously been addressed alongside one other construct but all three have not been addressed. In addition to this, research is lacking information regarding collegiate club sport athletes. The purpose of this study was to examine the thoughts of club level athletes and Division I Varsity level athletes as they relate to motivation, athletic identity and commitment to sport. The participants included 12 athletes, 6 at the club level and 6 at the Varsity level. For the club level athletes, themes emerged for motivation which included (1) relationships with teammates, and (2) sport improvement. The themes for commitment were (1) personal commitment, (2) love of the sport, (3) emotional connection, and (4) major part of life. There was also a singular theme found for athletic identity with club sport athletes which was (1) sport as a part of the individual. For varsity athletes the themes that were found for motivation were (1) sense of accomplishment, (2) personal drive, (3) sport improvement, and (4) others as motivators. The themes for commitment were (1) time commitment, (2) parental influence, and (3) scholarship. There was also only one theme for athletic identity found for Varsity which was (1) importance of the athlete role. From these themes, research may be conducted to further investigate Varsity and club level athletes in regards to what motivates them, why they remain committed to their sport, and how much they identify with the athlete role. This information may be beneficial for coaches, captains, and other leadership figures in relation to athletics at these levels.

Book excerpt: The majority of research in developmental sport psychology has targeted the youth and adolescent age groups (aged five to 18) and has tended to avoid athletes in organized and highly competitive environment such as major college athletics. The transition from high school to college brings many challenges. Academically and socially, students encounter increased course rigor, decreased in-class time, and adjustment to new social groups. Additionally, student-athletes encounter scrutiny from the public, extensive time commitments, changing social dynamics, and physical and mental demands as they combine athletic and academic pursuits. This on-going study explores student-athletes' perspectives of the developmental transition from youth sport to collegiate sport; specifically looking at the influential experiences that student-athletes believe to have experienced and the development and transfer of psychological skills, leadership skills, and life skills from one level to the next in light of these experiences. An interpretivist, narrative approach was used to understand experiences and perceptions of student-athletes who recently completed their first year in college. Thirteen student-athletes participated in interviews that involved pictorializing a developmental timeline and responding to questions from a semi-structured interview guide. Narrative thematic analysis revealed categories, themes, and sub-themes across student-athletes from various sports. This study suggests that individuals that transition from youth sport to college sport are becoming culturally constructed "emerging-adult student-athletes", are prone to unique forms of environmental adversity due to their status as a student-athlete and are consistently faced with rapidly changing social dynamics. In light of this, student-athletes believed to have developed and/or strengthened important psychological and life skills due to their unique transition from youth sport to college sport. This study provides evidence that student-athletes emerging into adulthood within an athletic context experience especially challenging circumstance. Furthermore, most influential developmental transitions involved adversity. Additionally, student-athletes sought external resources and support in addition to implicitly developing psychological and life skills. The findings of this study will be able to provide insight to produce educational resources that can cultivate a smoother transition in to collegiate sports for not only the student-athletes, but parents, coaches, and support staff as well.

Book excerpt: Collegiate athletes have spent their athletic career growing their athletic identity and are given significant support throughout their time in college, and so, the transition into retirement can be difficult and often cause a sense of loss with the end of their athletic career. This transition from college into sports retirement can be affected by a variety of different factors and influences on the individual and their experiences. This mixed methods, phenomenological study looked at the impact of athletic identity on both male and female athletes as they transitioned into retirement, focusing on Division I baseball and softball athletes. These participants were asked to answer the AIMS-Plus questionnaire and participate in an open-ended interview looking retrospectively at their collegiate career and transition into retirement. The results of the AIMS-Plus questionnaires revealed five athletes with high athletic identity (scores 1467-2200), three females and two males, and five athletes with moderate athletic identity (scores 1466-733), three males and two females. The data analysis of the interviews found the common positive factors influencing an athletes transition were outside interests, support from family and teammates, and continued relationship with their sport. The negative factors were involuntary retirement, the time commitment of their college program, and the lack of support from their programs after retirement. Injury was found to be both a positive and negative factor in transitioning depending on the individuals' relationship with the injury. Participants with a higher athletic identity, scored through the AIMS-Plus questionnaire, used language of depression and reported a sense of loss. Some participants reported their athletic identity helping them transition into their next career, focusing on the skills they had learned through athletics. In the reflections of these participants it was found that they wished there was a program in place to aid them into retirement with emphasis on career planning, support groups, and nutrition and exercise education. In summary, the experiences of collegiate athletes transitioning into retirement is influenced by a variety of factors and highly individual. The clinical significance of this research should provide future research into implementing support programs for collegiate athletes transitioning into retirement.

Semi-structured interviews were used to explore former student-athletes intercollegiate experience and their transition out of sport. The findings revealed that retirement from intercollegiate athletics requires an individual to create new social networks, learn how to train without the structure and support of a team, and develop a new identity. Additionally, the study found that a strong support system and replacing the sport focus early in the process of retirement assisted with the transition from sport. Implications of the findings of the study are discussed and recommendations for future research are made.

While most fans may cheer less enthusiastically for women's sports, female athletes are no less skilled or dedicated to their sport. Unfortunately, female athletes usually do not have a future beyond college and continue to play just for the love of the game. Despite the increased visibility of Olympic softball, college softball players have little prospects of playing professionally. College is a time in life where students create and maintain their personal identities, but serious athletes develop their identities as they also develop and sustain a physical and psychological commitment to sport; college softball players are no different. This internalized self-concept influences every other area in an athlete's life. With the conclusion of athletic eligibility, student-athletes find themselves in transition from being a current member of a team to a former membership status. Like most athletes, when a female softball player retires from competition they experience a loss of identity, find little guidance or support from their coaches and college administrative staff, and are usually left to figure things out on their own. Employing the theory of identity foreclosure, this study draws on semi-structured interviews to explore athletes' experiences of being National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I softball players as they transition out of collegiate athletics. The themes (a) "losing my identity," (b) "of course I'm a softball player," (c) "family, friends and coaches influence me," (d) "my schedule keeps me busy," (e) "no one there to help me," and (f) "what happens next" illustrate that improved communication between collegiate softball players and their parents, coaches, and peers is needed to encourage the exploration of other identities. As identity foreclosure is part and parcel of becoming an elite athlete, the NCAA is responsible for creating programs to help participating athletes develop a healthy transition out of their college career.
