Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A state-of-the-art assessment of research, demonstration, and commercial projects that involve the use of power plant condenser cooling water for agricultural and aquacultural purposes was conducted. Information was obtained from published literature, site visits, and communications with knowledgeable individuals. Thermal effluent uses were discussed for controlled environment greenhouses, biological recycling of nutrients from livestock manures, soil heating and irrigation, environmental control for livestock housing, grain drying, food processing, as well as the culture of numerous aquatic organisms. A large number of research and feasibility studies have been conducted, but few commercial enterprises are utilizing thermal effluent. Interfacing problems, environmental and legal restrictions, along with insufficient technology, have not allowed widespread commercial application. Specific research needs were discussed.

Download or read book Life Cycle Assessment in the Agri-food Sector written by Bruno Notarnicola and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents an overview of the International practices and state-of-the-art of LCA studies in the agri-food sector, both in terms of adopted methodologies and application to particular products; the final purpose is to characterise and put order within the methodological issues connected to some important agri-food products (wine, olive oil, cereals and derived products, meat and fruit) and also defining practical guidelines for the implementation of LCAs in this particular sector. The first chapter entails an overview of the application of LCA to the food sector, the role of the different actors of the food supply chain and the methodological issues at a general level. The other chapters, each with a particular reference to the main foods of the five sectors under study, have a common structure which entails the review of LCA case studies of such agri-food products, the methodological issues, the ways with which they have been faced and the suggestion of practical guidelines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Soil Health and Climate Change” presents a comprehensive overview of the concept of soil health, including the significance of key soil attributes and management of soil health in conventional and emerging land use systems in the context of climate change. Starting with a review of the physical, chemical and biological indicators of soil health and their significance for monitoring the impacts of climate change, this book then focuses on describing the role of soil structure, pH, organic matter, nitrogen, respiration and biota in sustaining the basic functions of soil ecosystems, and their anticipated responses to climate change. Further topics include the management of cropping, pastoral, and forestry systems, and rehabilitated mine sites, with a focus on mitigation of and adaptation to climate change impacts. Finally, the opportunities and potential risks of organic farming, biochar and bioenergy systems, and their ability to sustain and even enhance soil health, are discussed.

Book Synopsis Biochar-assisted Remediation of Contaminated Soils Under Changing Climate by : Shah Fahad
Download or read book Biochar-assisted Remediation of Contaminated Soils Under Changing Climate written by Shah Fahad and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2024-04-19 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil contamination with heavy metals like Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Mn, Cd, Pb, and Zn is becoming a main problem across the globe especially in developed countries. Globally, it has become a serious threat to human health and ecosystem integrity. applying amendments like phosphate compounds, liming materials, clay minerals, coal fly ash, organic composts, metal oxides, and biochar to heavy metals contaminated soil is considered one of the most promising in-situ remediation techniques. Biochar has become one of the most attractive research hotspots as a result of its special properties along with its important role in the climate change, global biogeochemical cycle and environmental system. This book will summarize recent progresses in understanding (a) metal-biochar interactions in soils, (b) potential risks associated with biochar amendment and (c) application of biochar for the remediation of HM polluted soils. In addition, research gaps and future directions in understanding biochar-metal interactions in soils will also be explored. - Enables readers to understand the most recent developments surrounding metal-biochar interactions in soils and their impact on agricultural productivity - Provides the latest statistics and literature review regarding the role of biochar in remediation of heavy metals polluted soils - Examines the global status of heavy metals polluted soil
