Book excerpt: The radar cross sections (RCS) of both small and large ships for High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (HFSWR) were studied by using Numerical Electromagnetics Code [4] and by using measurements from a HFSWR system at Cape Race, Newfoundland, Canada. The results of the study indicate that Teleost, a 2405-ton Canadian Coast Guard ship, and large cargocontainer vessels (~36000 ton) have comparable RCS values at 3.1 and 4.1 MHz. This was verified by comparing Teleost signals with the reflections of seven cargo-container vessels identified during an operational evaluation of the HFSWR. The conclusion of the study is that Teleost and the large cargo-container vessels have an angle-averaged RCS of ~40dBm2, while small vessels (~1000 tons) could reasonably be characterized by an angle-averaged RCS of ~30 dBm2, in the lower end of the HF band (3-5 MHz).

This book was released on 1982 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique is developed for estimating the radar cross section of the sea surface at HF (2-30 MHz) from two simple measurements made of the radar Doppler spectrum. These are: the ratio of approach/recede Bragg line energy, and the ratio of strongest Bragg line amplitude to average value amplitude of second-order backscatter at zero Doppler frequency. A nomograph is given, based on a theoretical model of second-order scatter developed by the author, which then allows one to determine the number of decibels the Bragg ocean spectral component is down from the classical Phillips asymptotic value, used here only for a reference. Comparison is made with some surface wave data for three different cases in which buoy data are available for comparison with multi-frequency radar data collected simultaneously at two different look angles. An example is also shown where such a calculation can be used to estimate the cross section of a target return existing within the same Doppler spectrum. Limitations of the technique are also discussed. (Author).

One is the strength of the radar bean sweeping over a target, the other is the strength of the reflected echo senses by the receiver. This book shows how the RCS "gauge" can be predicted for theoretical objects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original campus of the University of Michigan was nearly a perfect square about a half-mile along a side. A street-sized walk, appropriately called the Diag, runs diagonally across this square, connecting its southeast and northwest corners. In 1904 a new engineering building was either started or finished (I do not remember which) to house classrooms. When another engineering building was built on the expanded campus across the street from it many years later, the old building came to be known as West Engine, to distinguish it from the new East Engine. Old West Engine is (or maybe by now, was) a four-story, L-shaped structure that stood at the southeast corner of the original campus. It was built with an arch in it to straddle the Diag at the apex of the L. You walked over the Engineering Arch to get from one leg of the L to the other if you were inside the building, and you walked under it when you entered the campus from the southeast corner. Affixed to the masonry wall of the arch was a plaque I often noted in passing. It bore a quote attributed to Horace Greeley (1811-1872), who I did not know at the time was the founder, editor, and publisher of the New York Tribune. It said, simply, Young man, when theory and practice differ, use your horse sense. The suggestion seems worthy of an exclamation point instead of a period, but I do not remember if it had one.

Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis is to investigate and evaluate the effectiveness of ship radar cross section (RCS) reduction in the high frequency (HF) band by means of shaping. The study is based on a computer simulation which uses the method of moments to compute the RCS of a number of conventional and shaped ship geometries. It was found that a ship with canted deckhouse walls and a standard hull had little reduction in RCS relative to a conventional ship. This result shows that shaping is not as effective at these frequencies (3-30 MHz) as it is in the optical region. The hull is the major contributor to RCS near broadside. Shaping the hull did reduce the RCS slightly for the frequencies and elevation angles investigated.

Book excerpt: The HF radar cross section of three small ocean-going craft were measured in full scale with the SEA ECHO radar. The measurements were made over a wide band of frequencies. Care was taken in the calibration of the system to insure accurate absolute values of cross section. This work was done in support of studies of the use of surface were over-the-horizon radar for ocean range safety surveillance. The results demonstrated a severe fall-off of cross section for these typical craft at frequencies below 4 to 5 MHz.

Book excerpt: The traveling surface wave phenomenon, a significant echo mechanism for long, smooth bodies, manifests itself in the radar cross section (RCS) pattern of realistic targets for horizontal polarization and grazing angles of incidence. Existing radar cross section models do not take this scattering mechanism into account because none of the presently available theories and methods can treat traveling waves in routine fashion (see E.F. Knott, A progression of High-Frequency RCS prediction Techniques, Proc., IEEE, Vol. 73, No. 2 pp. 252-264(Feb 1985). Analytical radar cross section models for realistic targets should include this type of scattering in their calculations. This report presents a theory and an efficient method for calculating traveling surface wave contributions on a thin rod and an ogive of arbitrary length. Rectangular flat plate radiation patterns are also briefly considered. The details and necessary expressions for predicting RCS of plates will be given in a future report, where the approach will be extended to a more complex target. The theoretical approach presented here is based on the existing concepts of antenna theory and geometrical theory of diffraction. Radar cross section patterns that include traveling wave contributions for a rectangular flat plate and a rod of equal length are calculated and compared with measurements. The theoretical results and measured data show very good agreement.

Book excerpt: There have been many new developments in the ten years since the first edition of Radar and Laser Cross Section Engineering was published. Stealth technology is now an important consideration in the design of all types of platforms. The second edition includes a more extensive introduction that covers the important aspects of stealth technology and the unique tradeoffs involved in stealth design. Prediction, reduction, and measurement of electromagnetic scattering from complex three-dimensional targets remains the primary emphasis of this text, developed by the author from courses taught at the Naval Postgraduate School. New topics on computational methods like the finite element method and the finite integration technique are covered, as well as new areas in the application of radar absorbing material and artificial metamaterials. Matlab [registered] software, homework problems, and a solution manual (available to instructors) supplement the text. Written as an instructional text, this book is recommended for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students. introduction to the physics and mathematics of radar cross section in order to better understand the interdisciplinary aspects of stealth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The radar-cross-section (RCS) values of seven classes of surface ships have been determined at grazing incidence at frequencies of 1300, 2800, and 9225 mhz for horizontal polarization and for vertical polarization at 9225 mhz. Measurements were performed at the Chesapeake Bay Division at NRL as the ships proceeded in a circular orbit. The ships used for the measurements were the DD 764, DEG 6, DDG 19, LPD 1, DE 1027, DLG 26, and AFS 5. In addition, measurements were made on the DLG and AFS in C band at 5500 MHz for both horizontal and vertical polarizations. Cross-section values were plotted as a function of ship aspect in the form of polar profiles. The profiles plotted were the 20, 50, and 80 percentile values of the RCS distribution function, which were determined for 2-degree azimuth increments.
