This book represents the first empirically rigorous study of whether the analysis of transference produces lasting changes in a patient's personality by examining the case of Mrs. C., the most widely studied psychoanalytic treatment. A study of FRAMES (Fundamental Repetitive and Maladaptive Emotion Structures)as they appear over the course of a psychoanalytic treatment can test if the analysis of transference is curative. FRAMES are formal representations of recurrent patterns of a patient's behavior, extracted from transcripts of sessions. The emotion expressions that form the raw material of FRAMES result from the psychological processes that underlie Referential Activity, a measure of "the capacity to express all manner of nonverbal experience, particularly emotional experience, in verbal form." The referential process mediates alteration of maladaptive emotion structures in psychoanalytic treatment. The present study serves as some of the strongest empirical evidence to date of the efficacy of psychoanalytic techniques.

Book excerpt: Filling in the gaps from students' lack of experience and confidence, The Beginning Psychotherapist's Companion, Second Edition is a supportive and empathetic guide, addressing real-world concerns and providing essential insights not taught in textbooks. With a reassuring and clear writing style, Willer offers practical suggestions and clinical examples to address the professional development and emotional concerns of the beginning psychotherapist. She guides readers through structuring the first session, making clinical observations, and establishing a therapeutic alliance. Through the use of culturally diverse clinical vignettes, Willer discusses the foundations of ethical practice, including informed consent, confidentiality, documentation, and setting boundaries. The reader is guided on how and when to refer clients for medication and other health care. Crisis management principles are detailed, including suicide and violence risk assessment, child abuse, elder abuse, intimate partner violence, and rape. Willer also provides professional advice on contemporary concerns such as social networking, online searches of clients, the psychotherapist's internet presence, and other important emerging challenges. Comprehensive, practical, and thoroughly updated, The Beginning Psychotherapist's Companion, Second Edition is the ideal resource for students and early career psychotherapists.

Book excerpt: Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Research: Evidence-Based Practice and Practice-Based Evidence continues the important work of the first book published in 2009 by Humana Press (Handbook of Evidence-Based Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: Bridging the Gap Between Science and Practice). This landmark title presents in one volume significant developments in research, including neuroscience research, in psychodynamic psychotherapy by a team of renowned clinician-researchers. The demand for ongoing research initiatives in psychodynamic psychotherapy from both internal and external sources has increased markedly in recent years, and this volume continues to demonstrate the efficacy and effectiveness of a psychodynamic approach to psychotherapeutic interventions in the treatment of psychological problems. The work in this volume is presented in the spirit of ongoing discussion between researchers and clinicians about the value of specific approaches to specific patients with specific psychiatric and psychological problems. Multiple forms of treatment interventions have been developed over the past fifty years, and this volume makes clear, with firm evidence, the authors’ support for the current emphasis on personalized medicine. Groundbreaking and a major contribution to the psychiatric and psychologic literature, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Research: Evidence-Based Practice and Practice-Based Evidence provides firm grounding for advancing psychodynamic psychotherapy as a treatment paradigm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hatred, Emptiness, and Hope offers an updated vision of psychoanalytic object relations theory, revealing its application to transference focused psychotherapy (TFP), a treatment approach derived from and related to psychoanalysis. With empirical studies carried out by the Personality Disorders Institute at Weill Cornell as a basis, this volume expands the applications of TFP, illustrating it at work in scenarios that include severe personality disorders, disturbances in sexuality and love relations of narcissistic personalities, inpatient hospital treatment, and group settings. It also looks at the implications of new developments in neurobiology on psychoanalytic object relations theory. Readers will benefit from a discussion of the practice of TFP itself, with chapters that tackle the supervision of psychoanalysis, challenges for the future of psychoanalysis, and innovations that can serve to strengthen its role as a profession, a treatment approach, and a social organization within mental health sciences. It focuses on the analysis of particular clinical features of personality pathologies and describes the consideration of contemporary psychoanalytic object relations theory as a general theoretical frame of treatment that permits to conceptualize both normal personality functioning and the very nature of personality disorders. This volume also includes my recent efforts to contribute to the understanding of the relationship between neurobiological dispositions and their interaction with psychodynamic developments, again, both in normality and psychopathology. Finally, this volume explores the application of object relations theory to group processes, love relations, and therapists' training"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical Interaction and the Analysis of Meaning evinces a therapeutic vitality all too rare in works of theory. Rather than fleeing from the insights of other disciplines, Dorpat and Miller discover in recent research confirmation of the possibilities of psychoanalytic treatment. In Section I, "Critique of Classical Theory," Dorpat proposes a radical revision of the notion of primary process consonant with contemporary cognitive science. Such a revised conception not only enlarges our understanding of the analytic process; it also provides analysis with a conceptual language that can articulate meaningful connections with a growing body of empirical research about the development and nature of human cognition. In Section II, "Interactional Theory," Miller reverses the direction of inquiry. He begins with the literature on cognitive development and functioning, and proceeds to mine it for concepts relevant to the clinical process. He shows how a revised understanding of the operation of cognition and affect can impart new meaning to basic clinical concepts such as resistance, transference, and level of psychopathology. In Section III, "Applications and Exemplifications," Dorpat concludes this exemplary collaboration by exploring select topics from the standpoint of his and Miller's new psychoanalytic theory. At the heart of the authors' endeavor it "meaning analysis," a concept that integrates an up-to-date model of human information processing with the traditional goals of psychoanalysis. The patient approaches the clinical encounter, they argue, with cognitive-affective schemas that are the accumulatice product of his life experience to date; the manifold meanings ascribed to the clinical interaction must be understood as the product of these schemas rather than as distortions deriving from unconscious, drive-related fantasies. The therapist's goal is to make the patient's meaning-making conscious and thus available for introspection.
