Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Human Anatomy As indicated by its title, the present work is intended as an elementary treatise on human anatomy, and is not an elaborate system adapted to the use of those who have already advanced in anatomical knowledge. The author has attempted to prepare such a book as he feels would have been of service to himself in the commencement of his studies, and he hopes it may be found worthy of the approbation of students, for whom, and by whose frequent solicitation, it was written. Much of the difficulty, of which we hear constant complaint, in the acquisition and retention of anatomical knowledge, arises from an excessive, and, in some other respects, objectionable nomenclature. Not only has' the naming of comparatively unimportant parts been carried to an extreme, but, in numerous instances, the same parts are designated by a multitude of names, which are indiscriminately used by different writers. The nomenclature of anatomy has been founded on no particular system; the names having been chosen, according to the fancy of anatomists, from the shape, function, or supposed resemblance of the part, or in commemoration of the original investigator. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Anatomy The chief merits of the elementary treatise ON anatomy, a translation of which is now offered to the medical student, are, great accuracy and conciseness of descrip tion, combined with a happy arrangement of the subject. These advantages have secured for the original an extensive patronage abroad; and we hope that the little work will be found, on examination, to deserve an equal success in America. The size of the present volume adapts it admirably for the lecture-room and anatomical theatre; but, although intended more particularly for the medical student, the practitioner will find it useful as a book of/ ref erence, as the brief descriptions of the parts of the human body here given will aid him in bringing to mind the more minute details pre sented in many large works on descriptive anat omy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons on the Human Body: An Elementary Treatise Upon Physiology, Hygiene, and the Effects of Stimulants and Narcotics on the Human System The formidable size and ponderous character of many books placed in the hands of children have been prolific sources of discouragement of effort, and, not infrequently, causes for dislike and neglect of important and interesting studies. These simple Lessons on the Human Body are specially designed to present subject-matter in such quantity and of such quality as shall make it possi ble and probable that the young student may make its acquaintance.
