Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Physiology and Hygiene for Use in Schools The aim of the author in writing the present work has been to furnish an elementary text-book in physiology and hygiene which should recognize some of the more important discoveries of recent years concerning matters pertaining to health, and which should also attempt to exemplify in the clearest way the interrelation between physiology and hygiene. The primary object of the study of physiology in our schools is to inculcate an intelligent care of the body. With this in view, matters of hygiene must in one sense take first place, although our understanding of hygiene must be based upon a knowledge of physiology. In the present work the study of the body, of its various parts and their functions, is given full and comprehensive treatment; at the same time lessons on hygiene are given as natural results of the principles of physiology and as closely related thereto. A knowledge of foods and their values and of the causes and distribution of contagious and other germ diseases is of vital importance to every boy and girl. The effect of alcohol upon the various functions of the body is treated throughout the book in direct relation with the particular organs or functions concerned. The dangers connected with the use of alcohol will be found plainly indicated in accord with the results of the latest investigations in that department of science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene for High Schools In no branch of education is this connection between knowledge and conduct or welfare more direct than in that which deals with the study of our own bodies, and of the laws and practices which must be observed in order to maintain a condition of health and activity in these bodies that is, the study of physiology and hygiene. For upon the Observation of these rules of hygiene depends the preservation of health, a first essential for usefulness as well as enjoyment in life. He can best and most intelligently observe these laws who is familiar with and understands the facts from which they are deduced, the phenomena of physiology. This study should therefore be a part of the education of each and all of us. It should be taken up in youth, for it is during this period that the organs and tissues of the body, the frame, the heart, the brain, are growing and taking on the character which they keep throughout life, and that the practices and habits which are the most deep seated and fundamental are forming. The health and character then acquired often prove the bed rock of the Whole physical, mental, and moral development. The errors committed then are often irreparable, and it is the province of our educational systems to insure that at least these errors shall not be committed through Ignorance. In preparing a text book for this purpose of general education in the schools, the point to be kept most In mind IS the unity of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: An Elementary Text-Book of Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene From a considerable experience with both very elementary and more advanced classes, the author has been led to certain con elusions in regard to the teaching of elementary physiology and hygiene. It is not proposed to enter here into a discussion of the correctness of these conclusions, but a brief statement of a few principles that seem fundamental may perhaps be allowable. The chief object of teaching physiology in the public schools is to train the pupils to keep their bodies in health. The mere teaching of anatomy and physiology will not accomplish this, for the pupil cannot master the structure and workings of the body in a way that will enable him to frame the laws of health and apply them. Neither can the desired end be reached by teach ing rules of health without an anatomical and physiological basis; for without such a basis, hygiene is an intangible and an elusive subject. The author has therefore concluded that a conservative middle course is wiser than either of the extremes of method mentioned above. An elementary text in physiology should be a balanced text, containing sufficient anatomy to make clear the broader outlines of the structure of the human body, enough physiology to make plain the great laws according to which the body lives, and a full discussion of how a violation of these laws may be avoided. For the introduction of certain new matter, as, for example, the cell idea, the work of enzymes, and matter relating to germ diseases, there is little need for explanation. The groundwork of physiology and pathology has in recent years so shifted and extended itself, that the subject-matter of an elementary course must to a considerable extent be altered if it is to furnish 3. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Human Body and Health: An Elementary d104-Book of Essential Anatomy, Applied Physiology, and Practical Hygiene for Schools The most noted of England's prime ministers said, The first duty of the statesman is, the health of the people. One of our own statesmen asserts that the greatest asset of this nation is the health of its citizens. Inasmuch as recent science has shown clearly the cause and prevention of many diseases, it is important that this knowledge should form a part of every individual's equipment for the duties of life. The greatest enemies of the human race are microbes, which annually lay prostrate in this country and Europe seventy million people, of whom three million die. The microbes feeding on human blood have caused the destruction of armies and the downfall of a nation. On this account a knowledge of these infinitely small forms of life is of vast importance. Since the foundation of many diseases is laid during child hood, and since new ideas are accepted most readily in youth, every boy and girl during school years should be carefully and thoroughly instructed as to the cause of human wretched ness and the means of preventing it. The numerous text books on elementary physiology have largely neglected the discussion of facts relating to public health. As a result not one in a hundred graduates of our public schools could state any evidence showing whether vaccination is beneficial or harmful, or describe how malaria, diphtheria, and yellow fever are acquired, and how they may be prevented. Physiology. - The term Physiology is derived from Greek words which mean a story about nature. At first physiology included all kinds of natural study; but, as the word is now employed, it is the science which treats of the uses and actions of living objects. Human physiology is a study of what is done by and in the living human body. It is a study about our selves, about the uses and actions of all parts of our bodies - head and trunk, hands and feet, brain and nerves, stomach, heart, and lungs. It teaches us about the movements of the body; about feeling, seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and thinking; about eat ing, breathing, keeping warm, growing, wasting, and dying. Animals and plants represent living nature. Minerals represent lifeless nature. Animals and plants are born, live, grow, and pass away according. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene for Higher Grammar Grades Physiology is a most important branch Of the biological division of the natural sciences. Besides making a large part of both botany and zoology, it is set apart as a science by itself, devoted to the discussion of the functions of living matter. The nature work of the lower school grades leads naturally and logically to physiology, for which it forms a necessary basis. The subject of human physiology is the most important part of the nature study of the schools. It introduces the pupil to the physical house in which he must abide while he lives in this world and, with hygiene, to the essential conditions of highest attainment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology and Hygiene for Secondary Schools Advantages of Properly Managing the Body. - One result following the mismanagement of the body is loss of health. But attending the loss of health are other results which are equally serious and far-reaching. Without good health, people fail to accomplish their aims and ambitions: in life; they miss the joy of living; they lose their ability to work and become burdens on their friends or society. The proper management of the body means health, and it also means the capacity for work and for enjoyment. Not only Should one seek to preserve his health from day to day, 'bu't he should so manage his body as to use his powers to the best advantage and prolong as far as possi ble the period during which he may be a capable and useful citizen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health Studies Applied Physiology and Hygiene Anatomy and physiology, except in their simple elements, are of doubtful value for young pupils. But the study of how to keep well, or hygiene, is something that every boy and girl, man and woman, must learn or else must suffer for his ignorance. Hygiene, properly presented. Deals with things of everyday life. No pupil in the schools is too young to begin to learn how to adjust himself successfully to his surroundings. This learning how to meet our environment, as Professor Huxley long ago said, constitutes a liberal education. Many of the school texts have been based too exclusively on physiology, or have dealt largely with elementary anatomy, and have been difficult of comprehension to the pupils. Health studies differs materially from such books. It makes hygiene the primary study, and introduces only a sufficient amount of physiology to form a sound basis for the study of health principles. If this small book succeeds in helping its readers to think for themselves; if it encourages them in making their own definitions; if it leads them to realize that it is not ignorance but knowledge which leads to health, and there fore happiness; and finally, if it helps to prepare them to meet practical life as they will find it, - then its appear ance will have been justified. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essential Lessons in Human Physiology and Hygiene: For Schools IN the preparation of the following chapters on hu man physiology and hygiene, the author has attempted to present only such facts as are essential to the most practical knowledge of the subject - that is, such facts as people in the common walks of life most need to know, and such facts as all can remember and make use of whenever occasion demands. The plan of the work is such as adapts it to the needs, not only of in termediate classes in graded schools, but of the large number of pupils in the country schools where the time which can be devoted to the study of this subject is necessarily limited. As a general rule, an effort has been made to speak briefly and to the point, without unnecessary verbiage; and, wherever such could be done without sacrificing accuracy or clearness of state ment, rigid condensation has been practiced. It is believed, however, that this will not detract from the interest of the narrative or from the practical worth of the lessons. Many interesting facts, especially in anatomy, have been ruled out as not being knowledge of value to those for whom the book is intended. As the purpose and end of all such studies is the inculca tion of rules and principles for the preservation of health, anatomy and physiology are throughout made subservient to hygiene and hygienic precepts.
