Book excerpt: Based on meticulous research, Paupers, Poor Relief and Poor Houses in Western Australia 1829-1910 throws light upon those who are neglected within the celebratory history of Western Australia’s past. Who fed the indentured servants who were cast adrift by their masters? What was the government’s solution to the problem of unemployed paupers, many of them ex-convicts? And what became of the destitute women and children and the sick and insane? The overt wealth of present-day Western Australia makes for a problematic consideration of a colonial society characterised by the fundamental lack of resources and charitable institutions, and inadequate Governmental administration. With a sense of simplicity, Hetherington guides us toward contemplation of Western Australia as a state whose present wealth was built on the backs of indentured labourers, ex-convicts and penniless immigrants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imperial Boredom offers a radical reconsideration of the British Empire during its heyday in the nineteenth century. Challenging the long-established view that that the Empire was about adventure and excitement, with heroic men and intrepid women settling new lands and spreading commerce and civilization around the globe, this thoroughly researched, engagingly written, and lavishly illustrated analysis instead argues that boredom was central to the experience of Empire. This volume looks at what it was actually like to sail to Australia, to serve as a soldier in South Africa, or to accompany a colonial official to the hill stations of India, and agrues that for numerous men and women, from governors to convicts, explorers to tourists, the Victorian Empire was dull and disappointing. Drawing on diaries, letters, memoirs, and travelogues, it demonstrates that all across the empire, men and women found the landscapes monotonous, the physical and psychological distance from home debilitating, the routines of everyday life wearisome, and their work unfulfilling. Ocean voyages were tedious; colonial rule was bureaucratic; warfare was infrequent; economic opportunity was limited; and indigenous people were largely invisible. The seventeenth-century Empire may have been about wonder and marvel, but the Victorian Empire was a far less exciting project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the perceptions of European travelling writers about southern Western Australia between 1850 and 1914. Theirs was a narrow vision of space and people in the region, shaped by their individual personalities, their position in society, and the prevailing discourses and ideologies of the age. Christian, Enlightenment, and Romantic philosophies had a major influence on their responses to the land – its cultivation and conservation, and its aesthetic qualities – and on their views of both indigenous and settler colonial society – their class and assumptions of race and ethnicity. The travelling men and women perpetuated an idealised view of a colonised landscape, and a “pioneer” community that eliminated class struggle and inequality, even though an analysis of their observations suggests otherwise. Nevertheless, although limited, their narratives are invaluable as a reflection of opinions, attitudes and knowledge prevalent during an age of imperialism. Their perspectives reveal unique viewpoints that differ from those of immigrants who wrote about their hopes and fears in making a new life for themselves. These travellers were economically secure, literate and educated; foundations which provide an insight into the way power and privilege, implicit in their writings, governed the way they imagined Western Australia in the colonial and immediate post-federation period. The tinted lenses through which European travelling writers narrowly observed space and people, presented a mythical, imagined sense of southern Western Australia.

Book excerpt: Everywhen asks how knowledge systems of Aboriginal people can broaden our understanding of the past and of history. Indigenous ways of knowing, narrating, and re-enacting the past in the present blur the distinctions of time, making all history now, with questions of time and language at the heart of Indigenous sovereignty. Edited by Ann McGrath, Laura Rademaker, and Jakelin Troy, this collection draws attention to every when showing us that history is not as straightforward as some might think. ‘“Everywhen” is a term less known to most Australians than its close relation, “The Dreaming”, but it evokes something of the richness of Indigenous understandings of time, place and spirit. This impressive collection of essays — the work of Indigenous and non-Indigenous authors writing from a range of fields and perspectives — invites us to rethink how we imagine not only Australian history but the nature, meaning and purpose of history itself.’ — Frank Bongiorno ‘A timely book that challenges ways of thinking about the past and of historical practice. It speaks to the individual via first-person narratives and the collective — discussing groups and populations, and weaves the two together in a meaningful, informative manner. Everywhen offers a fresh reflection on languages, histories and practices that readers will find interesting and informative.’ — Bronwyn Fredericks ‘A powerful book about the inter-connectedness of story, language, time, Country, and heart.’ — Terri Janke ‘At the cutting edge of contemporary scholarship, Everywhen highlights the limitations of conventional history and significantly expands our understanding of Indigenous concepts of time. This is a path-breaking collection of essays that is essential reading for Australian and international scholars.’ — Mark McKenna
