In 1866 she fled to Aden where she was baptized with the Christian name Emily and where she married the German merchant Rudolph Heinrich Ruete. In Hamburg three children were born. Her husband died in 1870, and after that she lived in several cities in Germany. In 1885 and again in 1888 she went to Zanzibar. Between 1889 and 1914 she lived in Jaffa and Beirut, and afterwards again in Germany. She died in Jena in 1924. Book excerpt: "This is the first comprehensive study of contemporary German literature's intense engagement with German colonialism and with Germany's wider involvement in European colonialism. Building on the author's decade of research and publication in the field, the book discusses some fifty novels by German, Swiss, and Austrian writers, among them Hans Christoph Buch, Alex Capus, Christof Hamann, Lukas Hartmann, Ilona Maria Hilliges, Giselher W. Hoffmann, Dieter Kühn, Hermann Schulz, Gerhard Seyfried, Thomas von Steinaecker, Uwe Timm, Ilija Trojanow, and Stephan Wackwitz. Drawing on international postcolonial theory, the German tradition of cross-cultural literary studies, and on memory studies, the book brings the hitherto neglected German case to the international debate in postcolonial literary studies"--Publisher website, July 5, 2013.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contemporary world is increasingly defined by dizzying flows of people and ideas. But while Western travel is associated with a pioneering spirit of discovery, the dominant image of Muslim mobility is the jihadi who travels not to learn but to destroy. Journeys to the Other Shore challenges these stereotypes by charting the common ways in which Muslim and Western travelers negotiate the dislocation of travel to unfamiliar and strange worlds. In Roxanne Euben's groundbreaking excursion across cultures, geography, history, genre, and genders, travel signifies not only a physical movement across lands and cultures, but also an imaginative journey in which wonder about those who live differently makes it possible to see the world differently. In the book we meet not only Herodotus but also Ibn Battuta, the fourteenth-century Moroccan traveler. Tocqueville's journeys are set against a five-year sojourn in nineteenth-century Paris by the Egyptian writer and translator Rifa'a Rafi' al-Tahtawi, and Montesquieu's novel Persian Letters meets with the memoir of an East African princess, Sayyida Salme. This extraordinary book shows that curiosity about the unknown, the quest to understand foreign cultures, critical distance from one's own world, and the desire to remake the foreign into the familiar are not the monopoly of any single civilization or epoch. Euben demonstrates that the fluidity of identities, cultures, and borders associated with our postcolonial, globalized world has a long history--one shaped not only by Western power but also by an Islamic ethos of travel in search of knowledge.

Railroads linked remote hinterlands with cities; overland and undersea cables connected distant continents. New and accessible print technologies made the wide dissemination of ideas possible; oceangoing steamers carried goods to faraway markets and enabled the greatest long-distance migrations in recorded history. In this volume, leading scholars of the Islamic world recount the enduring consequences these technological, economic, social, and cultural revolutions had on Muslim communities from North Africa to South Asia, the Indian Ocean, and China. Drawing on a multiplicity of approaches and genres, from commodity history to biography to social network theory, the essays in Global Muslims in the Age of Steam and Print offer new and diverse perspectives on a transnational community in an era of global transformation. Book excerpt: The multiauthored book accompanying the World on the Horizon exhibition organized by Krannert Art Museum is the first interdisciplinary study of Swahili visual arts and their historically deep and enduring connections to eastern and central Africa, the port towns of the western Indian Ocean, Europe, and the United States. At once exhibition catalogue and scholarly inquiry, the publication features eighteen essays in a mix of formats - personal reflections, object biographies, as well as more in-depth critical treatments - and includes never before published images of works from the National Museums of Kenya and Bait Al Zubair Museum in Oman. By approaching the east African coast as a vibrant arena of global cultural convergence, these essays offer compelling new perspectives on the situated yet mobile and deeply networked social lives of Swahili objects. Moving between the broader structural relations of political economic change to more intimate narratives through which such change is experienced, the essays throw light on the ways in which the material fabric of the arts structure Swahili people's sense of self and community in an ever-changing world of oceanic and terrestrial movement.

Book excerpt: "Love, sacrifice, suspense and drama. Very good story - how could it not be 5 stars?" Amazon Reviewer *****"A heart wrenching love saga that portrays the orthodox practices of the Arab world. A story beautifully portrayed."Description: Real life story of a beautiful young princess from Saudi Arabia who lost her elder sister to the barbaric laws of the Arab world. She herself was imprisoned for exposing the truth and in the prison cell she met a handsome Christian boy her own age who falls in love with her. She is convinced that she too would be beheaded or stoned to death and her only crime was that she spoke the truth - the ugly truth of Saudi Arabia that is hidden from the rest of the world. She told her story from the dark confines of her prison cell, oblivious of the fact that if she is caught, she would be killed in the cell itself and that too by her own Muslim cell mates. Margaret Rowling found out the full story behind the princess's extraordinary predicament and the source of her untold secrets that she unfolded. The author has received death threats from Muslim fundamentalists and terror organisations warning her not to publish this book nor to expose those secrets but Margaret Rowling has risked her life by going ahead with this publication. Two attempts on her life have been made so far and now she lives under heavy security provided by the government of United Kingdom. An insight of what females in Saudi Arabia go through. And families of the royal house are not spared either.....Reviews:"I completed the book in a single sitting. It's a true story very well written.""Excellent. Could feel the characters. I am waiting for more books of Margaret Rowling to come up.""Couldn't help but cry at the fate of Ameerah. Loved every page of it.""A beautiful story, great romance. Captivating but disturbing.""One of my best books till date.""I finished reading this book six times.""Gripping plot in all the chapters and everything moves at a fast pace. A love story with a difference that holds you till the end." 5 Stars.
