Book excerpt: The purpose of this applied study was to solve the central research question of how the problem of lack of assistant football coach retention that also teach in the faculty at City High School (a pseudonym) located in Northern Virginia be solved. The results of the research were intended to provide data to administrators and coaches to allow decisions concerning the issue of assistant football coach retention that also teach. This applied research study focused on one high school with the data collection including interviews with the principal, the athletic director, the former head football coach, three former coaches on the faculty, and a former teacher and coach that sought to elicit the atmosphere and culture of the school and athletic program. An online survey was completed by the school’s administration, current coaching staff, three coaches from other sports, and former coaches on suspected reasons why teacher-coaches leave coaching. The same population also participated in an anonymous online discussion board that provided depth to the survey by providing qualitative data. The data analysis consisted of themes for the qualitative data and descriptive statistics for the quantitative data. The information gathered will help school administration become a way of the retention of the teacher-coaches in order to aid and improve the academic and athletic realm of the school.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to investigate the hiring procedures of high schools in the State of Washington regarding the employment of a head football coach. Two areas were examined: 1) the hiring procedures for head football coaches in Washington high schools (who makes the decision, how is the decision made); and 2) the job qualifications and characteristics schools look for when hiring a new head football coach. These areas were examined in an effort to determine if high school principals and athletic directors have differing opinions regarding the requirements and characteristics of the job. According to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) there are 385 public and private high schools in the state of Washington, 318 of which participate in interscholastic football (82.6%), 299 of which are public schools (94%). The sampling represented 50% of each classification and a total of 150 public schools. Of the 150 principals who were sent a survey, 86 responded (57.33%), while 102 (68%) of the 150 athletic directors responded. At least 50% of each classifications principals and athletic directors responded to this study. The analysis of the data was divided into four sections: (1) demographics, (2) qualifications of head football coaches, (3) factors and characteristics sought in a coach, and (4) the hiring process. Data was analyzed using means, standard deviations, percentages, and rankings. The results of this study revealed over 61% of the participating schools have had a head football coaching change within the past five years. Over 97% of the administrators indicated hiring a faculty coach was important compared to other staffing alternatives. The participating principals and athletic directors also reported nearly 90% of their current head football coaches were members of the faculty. An overwhelming majority of the administrators (80%) indicated personal appearance and fitness are important for a coach. It was also determined over 89% of the principals and athletic directors felt a candidate should serve an apprenticeship as an assistant coach prior to applying for a head coaching position, with nearly 80% indicating a minimum of three years experience as an assistant. Character and values (88%), leadership (80%) and communication skills (74%) were the three most sought after characteristics in a head coach by administrators. College or professional playing experience was considered the least important factor (5.5%) when considering a head coaching applicant. The four choices most often identified by the participating principals and athletic directors regarding who would serve on a hiring or interview committee were: the principal (90%, 84%), athletic director (98%, 99%), faculty and staff (74%, 74%), and parents (64%, 50%). The majority of principals and athletic directors agreed that the principal would be involved in the final decision to hire a candidate (48%), however, the AD's indicated they should be involved in the final decision 32% of the time to just over 16% of the principals who stated the AD should be involved. Over 24% of the respondents indicated the committee would make the final decision, therefore it would be safe to assume that the principal, athletic director, or both would play an intricate part in the decision based upon the previously mentioned data. Recommendations of this study were made for schools to recruit and retain qualified coaches. The researcher also made recommendations concerning: professional development, an adjusted salary structure for coaches, flexibility in the teaching schedule during the season, and assist in educating the community regarding the role of interscholastic athletics"--Document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social media have become an increasingly important tool for college coaches and administrators to connect with fans, alumni, and recruits. However, despite their increasing prevalence, it is not well understood which factors may contribute to the reach and popularity in social media of high-profile figures such as coaches and athletic directors. Using football bowl subdivision head football coaches and the popular social-media platform Twitter, this case study sought to explore the potential influence of on-field performance on coaches' popularity in social media. Among the results is the finding that the most influential factor is the football program's prestige (long-term success), while the coach's on-field success and the size of the school's fan base are of lesser importance. Given the increasing influence of social media in intercollegiate athletics, the case study's results feature several important considerations for administrators seeking to use social-media platforms to increase the reach of their athletic programs.
