Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 4: July, 1917 The ambitious purpose of the Ophthalmic Year Book is to rende most easily accessible to English-reading ophthalmologists all that is important with relation to ophthalmology in the year's literature of the world. This is to be accomplished by bringing together what is of importance and separating from it all that is not. In so far as important matter is not brought into the volume it fails of its purpose. In so far as unimportant matter is introduced it fails equally; since all unnecessary matter renders less accessible the thing for which the book is really valuable. Unnecessary matter must include repetition of what has previously been brought to the attention Of the profession, and particularly what has been noticed in previous volumes of the Year Book. Repetition must be avoided. That this is essential becomes more evident with the appearance of each new volume. The successive annual digests of the literature now aggregate pages, while the lists of titles given in the bibliography occupy 611 pages. In search ing the literature for particular topics the importance of keeping it down to the lowest possible limit becomes clearly apparent. Then the matter included within the Year Book must be arranged with the greatest care and according to some simple rigid system. It should be possible to ascertain what of value has been written on a given topic, or that nothing has been written on it, in the period with out giving time to reading pages that do not refer to it. Unless the matter sought has all been grouped together this will not be possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 17: Succeeding the Ophthalmic Year Book; June, 1921 Anterior chamber. - Kahn, in an article in reply to Seidel's remarks Con cerning physiologic pupil occlusion, Shows that there is an Obstacle to the passage Of the current of fluid from the posterior to the anterior chambers and that this Obstacle is due to the fact that the iris edge presses upon the anterior surface of the lens with some force. In the normal eye, the changes in size of the pupil have great influence upon the passage of fluid and upon the mixture of the contents of the anterior and posterior chambers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 17: Succeeding the Ophthalmic Year Book; September, 1921 Lead amblyopia. - Gibson, in dis cussing papilledema in ocular plumb ism states: that lead poisoning in children is apt to induce an over secretion Of cerebro-spinal fluid, as his cases prove; that this oversecretion is due to increased activity of the choroid gland seems likely. Whether lead in circulation causes this over secretion indirectly by means of a brain extract, or by direct stimulation, cannot be very easily decided. That lead does not excite the choroid gland to secrete, but induces the fundus changes thru the intervention of the kid neys, if accepted, could not explain the fact that the plumbic cases we see in children do not exhibit albuminuria or other evidences Of kidney disease, and that the fundus changes are those Of papilledema and not optic neuritis. Professor Mills, is right in stating that the fundus appearances of ocular plumb ism are identical with those Of cerebral tumor. He may be right in considering that lead acts indirectly on the choroid gland, as he thinks tumor growth does. In the case Of plumbism, however, we have lead circulation in the blood, as is proved by the fact that it is to be found in the urine and that it Often leads to a blue line of sulphid Of lead in the gums. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text Book of Ophthalmology No apology can be necessary for the issuance of a work of this kind, when it is known that there is not a treatise that is particularly designed for the student in his class work in college, most works being intended for the skilled oculist. The arrangement of the subjects has been made in keeping with the needs of the student: first the anatomy and physiology of the eye, then the diseases and their treatment in such natural order, that the subject treated is designed to prepare him as well as possible at each recitation for that which follows. While this treatise is especially intended for the student in his class work at college, it is no less adaptable for him as a general practitioner, for what is necessary for the student to know and understand thoroughly, in reference to a knowledge of the anat emy, diagnosis and treatment of an affection of the eye, in the most concise and practical form, is equally suited to the general practitioner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 5: October, 1915 These men have been actively interested in the teaching of Ophthalmology, and the improvement of the standards of Ophthalmic education and take up their work in this direction with the support of the majority of American Ophthalmologists. But it is a big under taking in which haste cannot be substituted for good judgment. A preliminary meeting of the Board has already been held, and the formulation of detailed plans assigned to committees. This is the time for those who are interested in the movement to bring before the members of the Board their ideas with regard to such examinations, especially such as have not come out in the discussions of the subject that have taken place in the different Special societies, or conferences during the past three years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 5: July-August, 1915 It is a hopeful sign that the impulses and work of civilization can go forward in spite of war, with its widespread exploitation and appeal to the methods and instincts of barbarism. So this third book of the twelfth part of Hirschberg's history of ophthalmology, deal ing with America's ophthalmologists of the nineteenth century, has a peculiar interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, 1917, Vol. 7 The most interesting piece of literature of ophthalmology that has appeared in the month is the first number of the British Journal of Ophthalmology. Its typography is neat, and it is printed on paper of a quality that is scarcely obtainable in America. The careful arrange ment and freedom from proof errors show the experience and devo tion of the editor, Sydney Stephenson, and its sub-editor, E. Erskine Henderson. The editorial committee adequately represents the best writers on ophthalmology, not only of the United Kingdom, but of the whole British Empire. It gives an illustration of the truth set forth in the Foreword that The stress of war has compelled all sorts and conditions of men to ask themselves how can they better utilize their resources and increase the efficiency of their work In countless ways they are finding that 'union is strength.'
