The study acknowledges the commonly held belief that prospective mathematics teachers have that they know and understand secondary mathematics. The purpose in engaging the preservice teachers in lesson study is to dislodge this belief. In particular, this research report focuses on one preservice teacher and her experiences during lesson study. Using the data collected, the researcher reports on the baseline beliefs that the preservice teacher held toward her knowledge of secondary mathematics, her mathematical experiences during the actual lesson study phase of the research and the final status of her beliefs in relation to her secondary mathematics understanding. After assessing the preservice teacher's beliefs, the report focuses on the moves the preservice teacher makes to protect her identity as a knower of mathematics. The report details how the researcher probed the subject's views through a follow-up interview. The researcher discovered during the follow-up interview that the subject was finally able to admit her lack of mathematical knowledge and her desire to not be seen as 'dumb' in front of the interviewer. The implications of the study suggest that teacher educators should be sensitive to preservice secondary teachers' perceptions of their mathematical knowledge and teacher educators should watch for the moves preservice teachers make to shift conversation away from mathematics topics.

This study investigated the effects of using lesson study with preservice secondary mathematics teachers to improve their proficiency at planning and implementing instruction. The participants were students (preservice teachers) in an undergraduate teacher preparation program at a private university who were enrolled in a mathematics methods course for secondary math teachers. This project used lesson study to engage preservice teachers in collaboratively creating lessons, field testing them, using feedback to revise the lessons, and re-teaching the revised lesson. The preservice teachers worked through multiple cycles of the process in their secondary math methods class receiving feedback from their peers and instructor prior to teaching the lessons in their field experience (practicum). A mixed methods approach was implemented to investigate the preservice teacher's abilities to plan and implement instruction as well as their efficacy for teaching. Data were collected from surveys, video analysis, student reflections, and semi-structured interviews. The findings from this study indicate that lesson study for preservice teachers was an effective means of teacher education. Lesson study positively impacted the preservice teachers' ability to plan and teach mathematical lessons more effectively. The preservice teachers successfully transitioned from teaching in the methods classroom to their field experience classroom during this innovation. Further, the efficacy of the preservice teachers to teach secondary mathematics increased based on this innovation. Further action research cycles of lesson study with preservice teachers are recommended.

Book excerpt: Teachers learn their profession throughout their careers but how this happens is elusive. This research attempts to find out how mathematics for teaching (MfT) evolves in individual teachers and whether it can be promoted within a lesson study setting for in-service teacher development. The present small-scale, school-based "ethnographic" qualitative study uses participant observer methodology. A detailed analysis of one lesson study cycle is presented, focusing on a team of secondary mathematics teachers' pre and post-lesson discussions. Analysis and interpretation of findings are structured initially in four components of knowledge for teaching: mathematical, psychological, didactical, and pedagogical. A fifth component - the philosophical - is identified in the pre-lesson discussion from the data, prompting the extension of the theoretical framework used for this study. The philosophical component assumes normative principles and value decisions, which are interwoven into the subject matter knowledge about mathematics. While it is seldom discussed it seems to be always present and can even be identified as implicit content of teaching. Shifts in teachers' cognition and practice through the lesson study process are noted across all five components of MfT which moreover are discerned to function cohesively and to resist separate analysis. The findings further show certain conditions needed to promote teachers' learning in lesson study settings, including the influential roles of mentorship and of observing one another's practice in the classroom.The results of this study are consistent with the aim for a supportive collegial network built over time and acting as a source of continued learning and ongoing improvement of teaching practice. They also suggest that the incremental changes observed in teachers' MfT hold a promise for building confident, effective and inspired teaching through sustained professional development activity over time. However, they do not support the view that mathematics, being just distilled common sense, can be taught without intense prior endeavor in the field.

We draw on Wenger's (1998) concept of "communities of practice" and Grossman, Wineberg, and Woolworth's (2001) discussion of "pseudocommunity" to present our analysis of two types of activities: a cycle of lesson development, implementation, and revision as it occurred in one lesson study group (LSG), and book discussions that occurred in large group meetings all LSGs. Our analysis suggests that activities such as these can support community of practice development and that "community development" is useful as a concept for structuring and studying mathematics teacher professional development. Book excerpt: This study examines the impact that an adapted lesson study had on the development of elementary pre-service teachers (PSTs) mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) within a professional development school (PDS) context. Research suggests that PSTs enter teacher education lacking the subject matter knowledge needed to teach mathematics. This study represents an effort to identify a model for PST learning that can be used to continue to develop PSTs MKT after completing coursework. Using Shulmans pedagogical reasoning to adapt lesson study for PST learning, I created the pre-service teacher lesson study cycle (PST-LSC). This qualitative research study used case study methodology to investigate and analyze the development of four PSTs MKT while participating in the PST-LSC. To analyze growth in the PSTs MKT, pre- and post-interviews were conducted. Additionally, audio-recordings of discussions, lesson study artifacts, and PST journal responses were collected over the course of the PST-LSC. The data were analyzed thematically using a priori codes and subcodes related to the MKT framework in order to identify how the PSTs MKT developed throughout the PST-LSC. The data suggests the PSTs MKT deepened as a result of participating in the PST-LSC. More specifically, the PST-LSC provided PSTs with opportunities to develop all six domains of MKT: common content knowledge (CCK), specialized content knowledge (SCK), knowledge at the mathematical horizon, knowledge of content and students (KCS), knowledge of content and teaching (KCT), and knowledge of curriculum. The results of the study also indicate that the sharing of mathematical strategies, cross grade-level discussions, readings, collaboration, curricular resources, observation, and reteaching involved in the PST-LSC were catalysts for the gains in MKT. This research has implications for teacher educators who teach mathematics methods courses and who supervise PSTs in field experiences.

Book excerpt: The study's goal was to examine the metacognitive practices and problem solving by preservice secondary mathematics teachers within secondary core content areas. The effort to analyze and describe the processes led to qualitative methods, a multiple case study. Transcripts of problem solving sessions and interviews were coded for the presence of multiple strategies, descriptive language, and use of metacognitive stages. From this coding, detailed accounts of the participants' problem solving were developed and analyzed. Findings revealed conceptual and procedural obstacles existed when participants sought to find an efficient solution to some of the problem solving tasks. Half of the participants struggled with using algebraic symbolization to represent a relationship and all had difficulty describing the variability that existed within sets of data. Both of these skills are integral components of the current secondary curriculum. The analysis also revealed findings concerning the preservice teachers' mathematical practices. A study of the stages of problem solving suggested that the participants' had limited persistence in problem solving and restricted attention to reflection on the processes used. Similarly, an analysis of their language demonstrated incomplete development of concept definition and ineffective use of terminology in a mathematical context.
