Book excerpt: I was a seaman that sailed the seas. I had gained a position on a three-masted sailing ship that traveled the world. We traded in spices, precious metals, foodstuffs, and, indeed, anything we felt could make a profit. I enjoyed the chance to see all that this kindly world had to offer. There were many days that were filled with boredom, especially while crossing the endless oceans. Then again, there were many days that were filled with excitement and fun. There were also a number of days that were filled with terror, due to storms tossing us at sea, or restless natives in the lands we visited. However, there is one fearful experience that stands out most sharply in my mind. It was the day we have come to call “The Adventure with the Shark!” Read this exciting tale of two boys who jump in the ocean for a race with each other, only to find themselves in a race with a shark! Book excerpt: In the summer of 1862, we were living in the State of Minnesota. There I had a most remarkable experience. We lived about a mile from the town of Lac Qui Parle. There were only three of us—father, mother, and myself. My name is Susanna. We had moved to Minnesota three years before. My parents moved to restore their health; for they were feeble and needed a change of climate. The first year, both father and mother were much better; but not long after, father began to fail. One day the sky was cloudy, and it looked as if a storm was coming. Since it was dark and blustering, we remained inside the rest of the evening. A fine drizzling rain began to fall, and the darkness was intense. It was getting late and father was reading to us, when there came a rap upon the door. It was so gentle and timid that it sounded like the pecking of a bird. We all looked at the door, uncertain what it meant. “It is a bird, scared by the storm,” said father, “and we may as well let it in.” I sat much nearer the door than either of my parents, so I jumped up and opened it. As I did so, I looked out into the gloom. Suddenly I sprung back with a cry of alarm. “What's the matter?” asked father. He quickly dropped the book and came toward me. “It isn't a bird; it's a person.” As I spoke, a little Indian girl, about my own age, walked into the room. Find out what the little girl is doing out in a storm, and how she saves the lives of the settlers a short time later. Ages 8 and up. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seventeen-Year-Old Son of a Pennsylvania Railroad Official Tells the Moving Story of His Rescue ONE of the calmest of the passengers was young Jack Thayer, the seventeen-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Thayer. When his mother was put into the lifeboat he kissed her and told her to be brave, saying that he and his father would be all right. He and Mr. Thayer stood on the deck as the small boat in which Mrs. Thayer was a passenger made off from the side of the Titanic over the smooth sea. The boy's own account of his experience as told to one of his rescuers is one of the most remarkable of all the wonderful ones that have come from the tremendous catastrophe. Here, in his own words, is his story. Jack Thayer was the son of a Pennsylvania Railroad official. He was 17 years old when he and his parents decided to sail from England to America on board the Titanic. This is his story of his rescue. Ages 8 and up. Book excerpt: Four-and-a-half-year-old Liam loves all Marine Creatures, but particularly SHARKS. Liam's fantasy is to be able to embark on underwater ocean adventures and talk to Sharks. One sunny day, when he goes fishing with his Dad, he meets Dearborn, a Great Whale Shark. To Liam's great surprise his eyes begin to shine with amazing magical beams, which enables him to talk to Dearborn! The Big Shark tells him he is a special Shark Boy and they have been waiting for him to come to their world. Together with his Granddad, Liam embarks on a Marvelous Adventure full of fun in the Deep Sea, with Goutomi the Japanese Stingray, Maximillian Forbes, the very posh Lion Fish and Pufferbee the little Prickle Puffer-fish! An exciting, adventure bedtime story book for children ages 4 to 8 who love marine life. This beautifully illustrated book about a Shark is the first in the series of Liam Shark Boy's adventures. The pictures of fish and the ocean animals teach curious children about the habits of the sea animals in a fun way. Brian Read Healthy Mum's Magazine 5-star rating 30/10/19 Liam Shark Boy Review by Brian R. on 30 Oct 2019 Book Style: Toddler and Kids Story book Reading Level: 3 (Reading Alone due to: Length of book and some descriptive vocabulary) Reading Length: 10-15 minutes (FYI - we never account for toddler questions) Illustration: Fun, cartoonish, cute Age Target: 1-8 Years of Age When reviewing this book, I was concerned about the sheer length of the story. However, as I got into the story, I found that the author had presented the story in beautifully constructed stand-alone segments. Those segments make it incredibly easy to read this book with a toddler, as it's just like a new story (with the same characters) every couple of pages. What's more, the book appears long (with 48 pages), but the font is large, and the illustrations provide interesting pauses for the young reader. What you're left with is a book that's really well written for toddlers and children alike. Brian Read - Children's Books There are several things to be impressed with in Liam Shark Boy. One of my favorite things about the book was the fact that...it was filled with facts! There are easy 2-3 facts per page that I, as a parent, learned during the story. What's more, I know my child was learning 5-6 things per page and enjoying the in-depth knowledge he was gaining about the ocean and sea life in general. Another thing that I loved about the book was just how specific everything was. For example, it wasn't just a boat that Liam went on with his father. No, it was a Kingfisher Offshore boat. We weren't just talking about a Porcupine Puffer Fish (and his family), we were talking about Pufferbee and Pufferbee's grandfather, Grandpuff. It's this specificity that really helps with retention in toddlers, and I loved how this story was so intentional in its inclusion of specifics. I think it's obvious from my review (above) that I really enjoyed Liam Shark Boy. Not only that, but my little boy enjoyed it just as much as I did, and isn't that what's important? He loved the magical story, the fact that Liam had super powers, and he loved all of the facts about the oceans and sea life. What's more, the story has been awarded a 2016 eLit Award in the Children's Books section, which should tell you all you need to know.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great white sharks are large sharks that roam the oceans. They have been named great whites because they are big, and because they have a white stomach. Their back is grey. Most sharks, and many other fish, have a stomach that is lighter than their back. That helps them to blend into the ocean. If a predator is looking down on them from above, their darker side blends in with the ocean bottom. If a predator is looking at them from below, their lighter side blends into to lighter shade at the top of the water. Scientists have begun to study these amazing animals more and more. Here are some fun facts they have found out about the great white shark. How much do you know about these wonderful marine animals? Can you answer these questions? What two things make great white sharks float? How many teeth can a great white have in their lifetime? How many great whites do humans kill each year? How do great whites warm themselves? How long is a great white's brain? Find out more about great white sharks and amaze your family and friends with these fun facts.
