But Eugenie quickly discovered that many people believed sharks to be ugly and scary—and they didn't think women should be scientists. Determined to prove them wrong, Eugenie devoted her life to learning about sharks. After earning several college degrees and making countless discoveries, Eugenie wrote herself into the history of science, earning the nickname "Shark Lady." Book excerpt: A teenager struggles through physical loss to the start of acceptance in an absorbing, artful novel at once honest and insightful, wrenching and redemptive. (Age 12 and up) On a sunny day in June, at the beach with her mom and brother, fifteen-year-old Jane Arrowood went for a swim. And then everything -- absolutely everything -- changed. Now she’s counting down the days until she returns to school with her fake arm, where she knows kids will whisper, "That’s her -- that’s Shark Girl," as she passes. In the meantime there are only questions: Why did this happen? Why her? What about her art? What about her life? In this striking first novel, Kelly Bingham uses poems, letters, telephone conversations, and newspaper clippings to look unflinchingly at what it’s like to lose part of yourself - and to summon the courage it takes to find yourself again.

Book excerpt: “A quintessential summer read.” —Marie Claire A warm and wonderfully vivid novel about taking second chances—in life and in the sea One summer day on the beach in Florida, two extraordinary things happen to Maeve Donnelly. First, she is kissed by Daniel, the boy of her dreams. Then, she is bitten by a blacktip shark. Eighteen years later, Maeve has thrown herself into her work as a world-traveling marine biologist discovering more about the minds of misunderstood sharks. But when Maeve returns home to the legendarily charming and eccentric Hotel of the Muses where she was raised by her grandmother, she finds more than just the blood orange sunsets and key lime pies she’s missed waiting for her. While Maeve has always been fearless in the water, on land she is indecisive. A chance meeting on the beach with a plucky, irresistible little girl who is just as fascinated by the ocean as Maeve was growing up leaves her at a crossroads: Should she re-kindle her romance with Daniel, the first love she left behind when she dove into her work? Or indulge in a new romance with her colleague, Nicholas, who turns up in her hometown to investigate an illegal shark-finning operation? Set against the intoxicating backdrop of palm trees, calypso bands, and perfect ocean views, The Shark Club is a story of the mysterious passions of one woman’s life: her first love and new love; the sea and sharks that inhabit it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Benchley’s fascination with the sea and its magnificent inhabitants inspired such classic novels as Jaws and The Deep, making him the preeminent author of ocean adventure and suspense. The Girl of the Sea of Cortez was his most heartfelt, cherished story of the relationship between man and the sea, both those that live in it and those who love it. On an island in the Gulf of California, an intrepid young woman named Paloma carries a special legacy from her father—a deep understanding of the sea and a sixth sense about the need to protect it. Every day, Paloma paddles her tiny boat into the ocean and anchors over a seamount—a submerged volcanic peak sixty feet underwater that is clustered with spectacular sea animals and a wondrous web of marine life. It is there that an astonishing event takes place, when on one of her dives Paloma is shadowed by a manta ray—an animal so large it blocks the sun. She develops an extraordinary relationship with this luminous, gentle creature, but instinctively knows its existence is a secret she must fiercely protect. Benchley’s novel paints a poignant picture of humanity’s precarious relationship with the ocean, which unfolds alongside a heartrending story of familial bonds, often revealing that the ignorance of man is far more dangerous than the sea. Full of beauty, danger, and adventure, The Girl of the Sea of Cortez is triumphant—a novel to fall in love with. Praise for The Girl of the Sea of Cortez “It’s hard not to compare Benchley’s tale . . . with Hemingway’s classic The Old Man and the Sea.”—The Christian Science Monitor “Charming.”—The New York Times Book Review “For a hot summer’s day, The Girl of the Sea of Cortez is the next best thing to looking through a clear face mask into blue water swimming with fish.”—United Press International

The Big Shark tells him he is a special Shark Boy and they have been waiting for him to come to their world. Together with his Granddad, Liam embarks on a Marvelous Adventure full of fun in the Deep Sea, with Goutomi the Japanese Stingray, Maximillian Forbes, the very posh Lion Fish and Pufferbee the little Prickle Puffer-fish! An exciting, adventure bedtime story book for children ages 4 to 8 who love marine life. This beautifully illustrated book about a Shark is the first in the series of Liam Shark Boy's adventures. The pictures of fish and the ocean animals teach curious children about the habits of the sea animals in a fun way. Brian Read Healthy Mum's Magazine 5-star rating 30/10/19 Liam Shark Boy Review by Brian R. on 30 Oct 2019 Book Style: Toddler and Kids Story book Reading Level: 3 (Reading Alone due to: Length of book and some descriptive vocabulary) Reading Length: 10-15 minutes (FYI - we never account for toddler questions) Illustration: Fun, cartoonish, cute Age Target: 1-8 Years of Age When reviewing this book, I was concerned about the sheer length of the story. However, as I got into the story, I found that the author had presented the story in beautifully constructed stand-alone segments. Those segments make it incredibly easy to read this book with a toddler, as it's just like a new story (with the same characters) every couple of pages. What's more, the book appears long (with 48 pages), but the font is large, and the illustrations provide interesting pauses for the young reader. What you're left with is a book that's really well written for toddlers and children alike. Brian Read - Children's Books There are several things to be impressed with in Liam Shark Boy. One of my favorite things about the book was the fact that...it was filled with facts! There are easy 2-3 facts per page that I, as a parent, learned during the story. What's more, I know my child was learning 5-6 things per page and enjoying the in-depth knowledge he was gaining about the ocean and sea life in general. Another thing that I loved about the book was just how specific everything was. For example, it wasn't just a boat that Liam went on with his father. No, it was a Kingfisher Offshore boat. We weren't just talking about a Porcupine Puffer Fish (and his family), we were talking about Pufferbee and Pufferbee's grandfather, Grandpuff. It's this specificity that really helps with retention in toddlers, and I loved how this story was so intentional in its inclusion of specifics. I think it's obvious from my review (above) that I really enjoyed Liam Shark Boy. Not only that, but my little boy enjoyed it just as much as I did, and isn't that what's important? He loved the magical story, the fact that Liam had super powers, and he loved all of the facts about the oceans and sea life. What's more, the story has been awarded a 2016 eLit Award in the Children's Books section, which should tell you all you need to know.

In the early 1920s, Aboriginal Alaskan expeditioner Ada Blackjack survived for two years as a castaway on an uninhabited island in the Arctic Ocean before she was finally rescued. And she’s just one example. The Girl Who Rode a Shark: And Other Stories of Daring Women is a rousing collection of biographies focused on women and girls who have written, explored, or otherwise plunged headfirst into the pages of history. Undaunted by expectations, they made their mark by persevering in pursuit of their passions. The tales come from a huge variety of times and places, from a Canadian astronaut to an Indian secret agent and to a Balkan pirate queen who stood up to Ancient Rome. Author and activist Ailsa Ross gives readers a fun, informative piece of nonfiction that emphasizes the boundless potential of a new generation of women. Stunning portraits by artist Amy Blackwell accompany every biography in bold, vibrant colours.

[star] "This is a genius concept." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review [star] "Lichtenheld's snarling shark and grimacing train are definitely ready for a fight, and his scenarios gleefully play up the absurdity. The combatants' expressions are priceless when they lose. A glum train in smoky dejection, or a bewildered, crestfallen shark? It's hard to choose; both are winners." -- Kirkus, starred review
