Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address to the People of the United States on the Presidential Election As a citizen of Tennessee, and a candidate for Elector of President and Vice-President of the United States in one of the Electoral Districts of this state, the undersigned has heretofore assigned thro' the medium of the newspapers, some of the reasons which have induced his determination to support Mr, Crawford. As a citizen of this great Republic, and possessing the rights and privileges common to every member thereof, he now avails himself of the opportunity afforded by the Press, to furnish to those concerned, some of the reasons which in his opinion ought to operate against the selection of other candidates. In undertaking this investigation, which, with regard to at least one of the aspirants of his own state, he conceives an imperious duty to himself and his country, he is well aware that he will undergo the censures and upbraiding of sycophants and partisans, many of whom entertain in reality the same opinions with himself, but make different professions; that he will be termed violent and abusive, when he is merely referring to acts of violence and abuse in others; and that he will be denounced by demagogues, as seeking to gratify personal hostility, when he only expresses what they know and feel, but have not courage to pronounce. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address, to the People of the United States, on the Subject of the Presidential Election: With a Special Reference to the Nomination of Andrew Jackson, Containing Sketches of His Public and Private Character Since the man who was not extensively known to the people of the United States, until the eighth of January, 1815, has consented to be considered a candidate for the office of chief magistrate, he will doubt less expect that some prominent traits of his character, and incidents of his life, will be exhibited to public view; that the people, whose political interest and national character be affected by the admin istration, may be enabled to duly appreciate the qualifications of the man, who would be placed at the head of it. It appears from the biography of Gen. Jackson, that in early life be commenced the practice of law in the state of Tennessee, was elected a member of the convention, and contributed a share in the formation of the constitution of that state; was afterwards elected a member of the Legislature, and from thence transferred to the senate of the Uni ted States; afterwards appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of law and equity, and after giving up this last office, that he turned his attention to the military art, and rose to the rank of Major Generalef the militia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Political Parties in the State of New-York: From the Acknowledgement of the Independence of the United States to the Close of the Presidential Election in Eighteen Hundred Forty-Four It has been the anxious desire of the Author, to preserve the most rigid impartiality in the prepara tion of this work, and to render 'equal and exact jus tice' to all classes of his fellow citizens. If he has failed in doing this, he trusts it may be attributed, rather to his inability to overcome that prejudice which has been termed 'the besetting sin' of the par tizan, than to any other, or more censurable motive. It was long since laid down, as an unvarying max im, that 'the logic of a politician, like the anvil of the blacksmith, leans all upon the one side'; and the writer of these pages will not claim, at this day, to be entirely exempt from the failings which are incident to mortality. It is in one of the secrisis that the United States are now ih volved. The election of President may assure the triumph or the ruin of the North, it will decide the question of Union or Separation. According to the name which shall come forth from the popular urn, America may regain peace and become the model for free countries, or may fall into that in curable anarchy which has made the Spanish Republic the' prey of miserable despots, the laughing stock and jest of Europe. It is certainly the duty of every good citizen to examine for himself the questions at issue, when a con ict like this is shaking. Half a continent, and is to be decided between the rising and setting of the sun, on a day rapidly approaching. And it seems equally his duty, after having thoroughly satisfied himself upon the merits of the great debate, to do what in him lies for the furtherance of that which be firmly believes the Right. This book was released on 2012-04-25 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on the U.S. presidential election system to analyze the basic principles underlying the design of the existing system and those at the heart of competing proposals for improving the system. The book discusses how the use of some election rules embedded in the U.S. Constitution and in the Presidential Succession Act may cause skewed or weird election outcomes and election stalemates. The book argues that the act may not cover some rare though possible situations which the Twentieth Amendment authorizes Congress to address. Also, the book questions the constitutionality of the National Popular Vote Plan to introduce a direct popular presidential election de facto, without amending the Constitution, and addresses the plan’s “Achilles’ Heel.” In particular, the book shows that the plan may violate the Equal Protection Clause from the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution. Numerical examples are provided to show that the counterintuitive claims of the NPV originators and proponents that the plan will encourage presidential candidates to “chase” every vote in every state do not have any grounds. Finally, the book proposes a plan for improving the election system by combining at the national level the “one state, one vote” principle – embedded in the Constitution – and the “one person, one vote” principle. Under this plan no state loses its current Electoral College benefits while all the states gain more attention of presidential candidates.

I do not entirel concur in the objections of Mr. Somerville, nor 0 the Federalist, to a choice of electors by the State Legislatures under certain regulations; but this is a question into which I shall not enter, for the main feature of the plan which has some months existed in my mind, and which I intended at a convenient day to make public, is to Map of at once the whole system of electors. Let there be no go-betweens in the case. The people Wish to proceed directly to their object, and to know Who they are voting for - not as a proxy, but as Pmb silent. In fact, they do not Wel understand this complicated machinery of electors. I do not believe that there is one Voter out of fifty in new-england, tuho knows or wishes to know any thing about it. The only question at the late election was, what ticket must I put in for Adams, or what for Craw ford '3 There was no inquiry about the opinions or pretensions of the electors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vote That Made the President Mr. Hayes was thus declared elected by a majority of one. If any vote counted for him had been counted on the other side, Mr. Tilden, instead of Mr. Hayes, would have had the 185 votes; if it had been rejected altogether, each would have had 184 votes, and the House of Representatives would im mediately have elected Mr. Tilden. One vote, therefore, put Mr. Hayes into the presidential office. To make up the 185 votes counted for him, 8 came from Louisiana and 4: from Florida. Whether they should have been thus counted is a question that affects the honor, the conscience, and the interests of the American people. There is not a person living in this country who has not a direct concern in a just answer. Not one will ever live in it whose respect for this generation will not depend in some degree upon that answer. The 12 votes were not all alike. Some had one distinction, some another. But, not to distract attention by the discus sion of several transactions instead of one, and because one in the present instance actually determined the result, I will confine my observations to a single vote. For this pur pose let us take one of the votes from Louisiana, that, for instance, of Orlando H. Brewster. This separation must not only be social, but also political, and, in time, territorial. Perfect compliance with this divine law requires that each race must have, in due time, a country of its own'. The consequences which further disobedience to the higher law will probably entail, will make the imperative nature of its policy more evident.
