Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Active Service' traces a young Sid Dowland from civilian life into the tough environment of the Guards Depot in the 1930's and then on to a Guards service Battalion in London and prewar Egypt. The outbreak of war found Sid taking part in the retreat to Dunkirk and then service in North Africa before volunteering for the SAS. Captured after a disastrous raid in Sardinia, he escaped from a POW camp in Italy before making it back to England. The end of the war did not signal peace as the Guards were sent into action in Palestine and subsequently to the jungles of Malaya where Sid found that his SAS experience is in great demand. Sid later told his story to Richard Dorney, himself a Guardsman. An Active Service is a tale of adventure but will be of interest to anyone studying the Second World War or the early days of the SAS. Most of the historical information is previously unpublished and much of it is drawn from SAS operation reports in the National Archives and from the war diaries of the Grenadier Guards. The lively text is accompanied by many previously unseen photographs from private collections and is brought to life by a series of high quality and accurate drawings depicting the uniforms of the day. It is an enjoyable human story but is also an accurate account of military life during the war years which will be of interest to anyone researching or studying this period, particularly those with an interest in the early days of the SAS, the world's premier élite force. Key sales points: Fascinating personal story of a member of the Grenadier Guards and SAS, covering pre-WWII service as a regular, Dunkirk, the early days of the SAS, and postwar Palestine and Malaya / Contains much previously unpublished information from archives and war diaries, as well as Sid's account of the early days of the SAS, and service with the Grenadier Guards / Lively text supplemented by a number of interesting photos and superb drawings by artist Sean Bolan.

Book excerpt: The U.S. military has been continuously engaged in foreign conflicts for over two decades. The strains that these deployments, the associated increases in operational tempo, and the general challenges of military life affect not only service members but also the people who depend on them and who support them as they support the nation â€" their families. Family members provide support to service members while they serve or when they have difficulties; family problems can interfere with the ability of service members to deploy or remain in theater; and family members are central influences on whether members continue to serve. In addition, rising family diversity and complexity will likely increase the difficulty of creating military policies, programs and practices that adequately support families in the performance of military duties. Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society examines the challenges and opportunities facing military families and what is known about effective strategies for supporting and protecting military children and families, as well as lessons to be learned from these experiences. This report offers recommendations regarding what is needed to strengthen the support system for military families.

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the tender age of 16 Thomas Seaton took up a cadestship in the East India Company in 1822, and waved farewell to his native London for a career of soldiering in India. He was to spend most of his life in the Indian sub-continent and its border regions, at the sharp end of the expansion of the British Empire. Plunged into a new world of sights and scenes of India Lieutenant Seaton of the 35th Native Infantry had little time to adjust before beginning his first major campaign at the bloody siege of the siege of Bhurtpore. A few years later, he was part of the very unsuccessful British incursion into Afghanistan in 1842, his memoirs as one of the besieged in Jalalabad are among the best that have ever been written. A decade later, as the first signs of Great Mutiny among were noticed among the native troops, Seaton’s superiors ordered him from his sick bed to take command of the 60th Native Infantry, a regiment that was known to be close to open revolt, despite Seaton's dest efforts the 60th mutinied and their British officers barely escaped with their lives. Seaton served with distinction at the siege of Delhi and after the fall of the city was sent with reinforcements to the beleagured Fatehgarh. In command of the forces that would soon be outnumbered, Colonel Seaton determined on a brave course of action; a night march followed by a surprize attack on the rebels. Colonel Seaton smashed the rebel troops leaving the entire area free from their influence. In this brilliant action he and his men “had marched, out and home, forty-four miles, had fought an action, defeating the enemy with considerable loss, and capturing their guns, ammunition, tents, stores, and baggage, and they had returned home safely with the captured guns, without leaving behind a single straggler, and, in spite of the tremendous heat, doing all in a little over twenty-two hours.”. A fine action packed memoir filled with vignettes and anecdotes of the British Raj.

Book excerpt: This volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series contains all papers accepted for presentation at the 10th IFIP/IEEE International Workshop on Distributed Systems: Operations and Management (DSOM’99), which took place at the ETH Zürich in Switzerland and was hosted by the Computer Engineering and Networking Laboratory, TIK. DSOM’99 is the tenth workshop in a series of annual workshops, and Zürich is proud to host this 10th anniversary of the IEEE/IFIP workshop. DSOM’99 follows highly successful meetings, the most recent of which took place in Delaware, U.S.A. (DSOM'98), Sydney, Australia (DSOM'97), and L’Aquila, Italy (DSOM'96). DSOM workshops attempt to bring together researchers from the area of network and service management in both industry and academia to discuss recent advancements and to foster further growth in this ?eld. In contrast to the larger management symposia IM (In- grated Network Management) and NOMS (Network Operations and Management S- posium), DSOM workshops follow a single-track program, in order to stimulate interaction and active participation. The speci?c focus of DSOM’99 is “Active Technologies for Network and Service Management,” re?ecting the current developments in the ?eld of active and program- ble networks, and about half of the papers in this workshop fall within this category.

Book excerpt: This book is written by a veteran for other veterans, to assist in the transition from Active Duty. It specifically addresses the timeline, requirements and challenges one must overcome in order to gain a position in the federal civil service, or "GS" Government Service. This book will help you to establish your own timeline and drumbeat for navigating the process. This timeline should begin prior to your separation and continue throughout your 180 day active duty waiting period (for positions within DoD) until you're hired and on-boarded. This book is dedicated to walking you through this process, step-by-step and chapter-by-chapter.Along the way, this book provides insights and information which will allow veterans to maximize their potential opportunities for employment. It tells you exactly how and when to request additional benefits (such as leave and pay) that may be available, (some only available for veterans). Upon joining the GS ranks (federal civil service), you will want to set yourself to maximize your returns under the new benefit plans which apply to the civil service; specifically, the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) and the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). This book will insure that you have the right information when on-boarding so that you make informed decisions and (hopefully) establish your initial payroll deductions to maximize the 5% TSP matching available to you - something not previously available to you while on active duty!Throughout this book, the reader is provided with links to source documents and current information from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), USAJobs.com, the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) or other bodies; giving necessary information should current policy/procedures change, especially during COVID. Finally, this book provides an Action Checklist for the reader to follow and not miss a critical step, or inadvertently leave anything on the table. If you're even thinking of applying for jobs in the federal civil service - this book is a must-read!!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A raw and rampaging debut novel from the author of the “inventive, unsparing, irreverent and consistently entertaining” (NYTBR) memoir Eat the Apple--the last phase of war for US veterans: returning home. What was it like? It's the only thing anyone wants to know about war--and the last thing Corporal Dean Pusey wants to talk about, at least not with one of these fat and happy civilians crowding the bar. Dean is two months free from the Marine Corps, and life back in his Indiana hometown is anything but peaceful. That's when the woman next to him offers to buy him a drink. Max is nice--gorgeous, funny, easy to talk to. Dean doesn't dare tell her about the sheep he took care of on his first deployment, only to watch it get torn to shreds by a pack of wild dogs; or the naked, shivering Iraqi teenager his platoon detained after an IED blast. He needs to leave all that behind and become a new person-the kind who sticks around when Max gets pregnant. He's white-knuckling it, trying to keep calm, and it's not easy. Harder still when his friend and comrade Ruiz starts showing up all over the place like he's been invited--like he didn't die a year ago. He has Max now, he has his baby daughter, River. He doesn't have time for ghosts. With his signature black humor, hard-eyed honesty, and stylistic ingenuity, Matt Young delivers a novel that turns the typical war story on its head--beginning not with enlistment but with retirement, and locating the life-or-death stakes not in battle, but in the domestic theaters of fatherhood, family, forgiveness, and love.

Book excerpt: Approximately 4 million U.S. service members took part in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Shortly after troops started returning from their deployments, some active-duty service members and veterans began experiencing mental health problems. Given the stressors associated with war, it is not surprising that some service members developed such mental health conditions as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance use disorder. Subsequent epidemiologic studies conducted on military and veteran populations that served in the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq provided scientific evidence that those who fought were in fact being diagnosed with mental illnesses and experiencing mental healthâ€"related outcomesâ€"in particular, suicideâ€"at a higher rate than the general population. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the quality, capacity, and access to mental health care services for veterans who served in the Armed Forces in Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn. It includes an analysis of not only the quality and capacity of mental health care services within the Department of Veterans Affairs, but also barriers faced by patients in utilizing those services.
