Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress and accent are central, organizing features of grammar, but their precise nature continues to be a source of mystery and wonder. These issues come to the forefront in acquisition, where the tension between the abstract mental representations and the concrete physical manifestations of stress and accent is deeply reflected. Understanding the nature of the representations of stress and accent patterns, and understanding how stress and accent patterns are learned, informs all aspects of linguistic theory and language acquisition. These two themes - representation and acquisition - form the organizational backbone of this book. Each is addressed along different dimensions of stress and accent, including the position of an accent or stress within various prosodic domains and the acoustic dimensions along which the pronunciation of stress and accent may vary. The research presented in the book is multidisciplinary, encompassing theoretical linguistics, speech science, and computational and experimental research.

Book Synopsis A Perceptual Study of Intonation by : J. T. Hart
Download or read book A Perceptual Study of Intonation written by J. T. Hart and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-08-23 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an experimental-phonetic approach to the study of intonation, defined as the ensemble of pitch variations in speech. It gives a detailed explication of the analysis of intonation by means of the stylization method: studying the perceptual consequences of deliberate simplifications of speech melody makes it possible to give a description in terms of perceptually relevant, discrete events. Theoretical insights and the acoustic, perceptual, and physiological experimental evidence that supports them are amply discussed. Phoneticians and speech scientists will find the innovative, unique features of this book of interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining coverage of the key concepts and tools within phonetics and phonology with a systematic introduction to Praat, this textbook provides a lively and engaging 'way in' to the discipline. The author first covers the fundamentals of the articulatory and acoustic aspects of speech and introduces Praat as the main tool for examining and visualising speech. Next, the unit of analysis is gradually expanded (from syllables to words to turns and dialogues) and excerpts of real dialogues exemplify the core concepts for discovering how speech works. The final part of the book brings all the concepts and notions together with commentaries to the transcription of several short excerpts of dialogues. This book will be essential reading for students on undergraduate courses in phonetics and phonology.

Book Synopsis Intonation and Its Parts by : Dwight Bolinger
Download or read book Intonation and Its Parts written by Dwight Bolinger and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It's not what she said, it's the way that she said it," is a complaint we have all heard (or made) some time or another. What does it refer to? It obviously relates to the various forms of wordless communication, but especially to the speaker's use of intonationthe rise and fall of the pitch of the voiceto convey sarcasm or resignation, anger or apprehension, or any of scores of other moods. In this summation of over forty years of investigation and reflection, the author analyzes the nature, variety and utility of intonation, using some 700 examples from everyday English speech. The work looks at both accent (pitch shift that points up individual words) and overall configurations (melodies that shape the meaning of whole sentences). It shows that most easily understood utterances employ one or another of a surprisingly small stock of basic melodies, and it shows both intonation and visible gesture to be parts of a larger complex that conveys grammatical as well as emotional information. Though it is one of the major divisions of the science of linguistics, intonation is of great interest to others outside of linguisticsto actors and lawyers who must use the voice to assert, to downplay, or to emote; to English teachers as an essential ingredient of idiomatic speech; to musicians for its many common elements in music theory; and to psychologists and anthropologists as a gauge of emotional tension and a clue to behavior.
