Book excerpt: “The perfect book to read with your friends.” —Bustle “The debut novel of the season, The Other's Gold reads like an origin story for the women of Big Little Lies.” —Elle An insightful and sparkling novel that opens on a college campus and follows the friendship of four women across life-defining turning points Assigned to the same suite during their freshman year at Quincy-Hawthorn College, Lainey, Ji Sun, Alice, and Margaret quickly become inseparable. The leafy green campus they move through together, the idyllic window seat they share in their suite, and the passion and ferocity that school and independence awakens in them ignites an all-encompassing love with one another. But they soon find their bonds--forged in joy, and fused by fear--must weather threats that originate from beyond the dark forests of their childhoods, and come at them from institutions, from one another, and ultimately, from within themselves. The Other's Gold follows the four friends as each makes a terrible mistake, moving from their wild college days to their more feral days as new parents. With one part devoted to each mistake--the Accident, the Accusation, the Kiss, and the Bite--this complex yet compulsively readable debut interrogates the way that growing up forces our friendships to evolve as the women discover what they and their loved ones are capable of, and capable of forgiving. A joyful, big-hearted book that perfectly evokes the bittersweet experience of falling in love with friendship, the experiences of Lainey, Ji Sun, Alice, and Margaret are at once achingly familiar and yet shine with a brilliance and depth all their own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ames Farm of Woolwich, Maine documents the life of a Maine dairy-farming family in the 1930s through '60s. The Ames family worked the same land in Woolwich, Maine since 1778 and Roberta Ames, the author of this memoir, is the last member of the family to have been born and raised on the farm. Although the family raised crops for themselves and for sale, their farm was primarily a dairy farm with a herd of twenty-five cows, calves, and heifers, which had to be tended to every day. The farm had no electricity, no running water, no ice other than what was harvested from the river, and the family's workday began every day, summer or winter, at 4:30 a.m. Despite the hardships, Roberta loved the farm and all the attributes of a subsistence farming family's life. It was a personal tragedy for her, as well as for her father and mother, when circumstances made it clear that they could no longer maintain the farm, and the farm had to pass out of the Ames family after nearly 200 years. A member of the sixth, and last, generation of the Ames family to own the farm, Roberta wrote this memoir, not for nostalgia's sake alone, but to document a vanished way of life before it is forgotten forever.

This book was released on 2023-05-04 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blanche Ames Ames and Oakes Ames advanced women's suffrage, reproductive rights, artistic expression, and scientific knowledge, among other accomplishments, in the first half of the twentieth century. Blanche was part of women's history for nearly seven decades and deserved to be better known for that and other reasons. Oakes's contributions to the women's suffrage movement and his extraordinary scientific accomplishments might have received greater recognition had he not avoided the spotlight so successfully. Their story is one of mutual enabling. Believing in gender equality, even if outside the bounds of what was considered socially acceptable, they named their home "Borderland" to represent boundary pushing. One lasting influence is found in the social justice arena. The Harvard professor of botany and supervisor of the university's major botanical institutions and his sociable, highly independent wife were both active in the fight to secure the vote for women, with Blanche contributing original political cartoons to newspapers. Blanche led the Birth Control League of Massachusetts for nearly twenty years, then used her position and skills on behalf of the New England Hospital for Women and Children. Unity Church and Memorial Hall in Easton, Massachusetts, were family gifts, as was their home, now Borderland State Park.
