Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Horses and Horse Breeding Should I attempt to narrate one-half of what has been told me by such venerable horsemen, or to produce one - quarter of my correspondence with such persons, that matter would of itself make a book double the size of this; consequently, I con fine myself to the facts gathered as being of more importance to'my readers than to oblige them to wade through the waters that I have passed through in order to gather them. As to the illustrations contained herein, I have endeavored to give the true likeness of a few of the most noted horses mentioned, and that of myself, the author, thinking that these may be both interesting and instructive to my readers; but have refrained from filling up the book with illustrations for aign to the object of the work for the sake of making an unnecessarily large and high-priced book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse Book: A Practical Treatise on the American Horse Breeding Industry as Allied to the Farm In the year 1885 Mr. J. H. Sanders, founder of The Breeder's Gazette, brought out a little volume entitled "Horse Breeding," which for a period of nearly twenty-five years has stood as the standard authority on the subject to which it was devoted. It passed through many editions in this country, besides being translated and republished in Germany. The "whirligig of time," however, has now rendered it desirable that the old work be supplanted by something more modem; hence the appearance of this volume at this time. Since the death of Mr. Sanders Sr. in 1899 the heavy end of the editorial work in connection with the horse department of The Breeder's Gazette has been carried by Mr. James H. S. Johnstone, former editor of the Chicago "Horseman." In his capacity as Assistant Editor of The Gazette during the past eight years, he has had exceptional opportunities for perfecting his already broad practical knowledge of the horse. It was believed therefore, that no writer upon this topic in the United States at this date was better equipped to undertake this task. It will be noted that in the preparation of this volume no effort has been made to deal with the horse as relates to the race course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frank Forester's Horse and Horsemanship of the United States and British Provinces of North America, Vol. 2 of 2 The thoroughbred horse of America having been treated m extenso in the whole of the first volume, which is devoted solely to that branch of the subject, it is my purpose, in this, to deal with the various races and types of the animal in general use, of breeding, conditioning, stabling, breaking, and managing in general. The thoroughbred horse of America is the only family Of the horse, on this continent, of pure and unmixed blood. Nor can even this pretension be made out to satisfaction, in all cases, even where the American thoroughbred can trace directly in both lines, to imported English thoroughbred dam and sire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Riding and Driving Horses: Their Breeding and Rearing The Chair was taken by Mr. William Eve, the President of the Farmer's Club. There was a large attendance of Members and Visitors present. Mr. Walter Gilbey, of Elsenham Hall, Elsenham, Essex, introduced the subject as follows: - For many years the subjects dealt with in this Address have interested me deeply. Twelve months ago I made application to Mr. Druce, the Secretary of this Club, to be allowed to call attention to them, but was unfortunately too late, all arrangements for 1884 having been then made. Very many causes have been assigned for the decline of horse-breeding. It will be noticed that I accept one only, to wit, the failure in persevering to raise animals of size, quality, and value. The principal object which I have in view, therefore, is to make our shortcomings in this respect more generally known, and to offer suggestions for breeding superior horses, as these latter will always command a ready sale at prices remunerative to the breeder. It is an admitted fact that the true-bred English hunter, hack, carriage and draught horse cannot be equalled in any other country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Regeneration of the Morgan Horse Of the three types of light horses which American breeders have developed during a century and a quarter, none stands higher in history, judged from the interest and affection which have been devoted to it, none has had a more direct and lasting influence on other types, none, in fact, has been more uniform in type, more prepotent in breeding, or more nearly a fixed breed than the Morgan horse. With an ancestry which must have been Of the highest merit, reared on the limestone and granite hills of New England, imbued with remarkable endurance and stamina by a rigorous but invigor ating climate, these little horses seventy-five years ago yielded to none in popularity and held first place in the actual money value placed on individuals and on the service fees of sires. Fifty years ago Morgan stallions were received in the Show rings of Kentucky with enthusiasm. Yet during the last twenty years the name of Morgan has been anathema among the horse breeders of Kentucky, the breed has been rarely seen in the show ring at state and national fairs, and the live-stock press and many horsemen of authority have declared the Morgan to be an extinct race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Breeding Racehorses: By the Figure System IN presenting the late Mr. Bruce Lowe's book to the public, I am much afraid that I have by no means done him justice. The difficulty of checking an immense mass of pedigrees - English, Australian, and American - is in itself a very serious one to any but an idle man; but the further and more important trouble has been that Mr. Bruce Lowe left a very large portion of his work unrevised, and inaccuracies here and there which he no doubt would have detected, had he lived, could not be corrected without also some attempt to assume how far such correction would have altered the tenor of his argument. The most important of these inaccuracies I have thought it best to leave standing. This occurs in the pedigree of Ormonde, for it seems better that the reader should know what was in Mr. Bruce Lowe's mind when he wrote about the breeding of that horse.
