Book excerpt: Excerpt from Americans of to-Day and to-Morrow A Fine young fellow in a Western college, with that secret desire to do large things with his life hidden away in his breast, as it is in the hearts of most young Americans, said one day, after finishing a thesis on the great days of a former time in history: "Why could not I have lived in that day? Men did great things and did them well then. What sheer joy to be one of the people who dominate human events!" He had been studying and writing of one of the ruling nations of history. Another young fellow standing by replied: "That day is dawning for America. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America of to-Morrow Archbishop Ireland made me acquainted with Abbe F elix Klein, then a Professor in the Catholic In stitute at Paris, and from that day the French capital has been to me another city. The French people can understand us, and sincere Catholics there can open their hearts to sincere Protestants. The gay, gentle, delicate, and refined scholar banters us cheerfully but he really likes us. He interprets for us the inner mo tives of the leaders of the ancient Church, and he be lieves that true religion thrives best in an atmosphere of political freedom. In outer form this prophecy of To-morrow appears to be a jest, a merry notebook of a holiday recreation; in essence it is an affectionate reve lation of a man's soul who believes in liberty and the triumph of truth; it is an interpretation of momentous events which are too near us to be seen in a true per spective. Here is one who is admitted to the evening councils of Paulist fathers, to the private offices of dis tinguished bishops, to the committee rooms of mission ary priests, and American Protestants are taught what immense plans are formed and steadily developed in action. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America's Tomorrow Scientific books must essentially be largely statements of fact, and in reading them any but the most scientific mind becomes quickly weary. Statements of mere fancies, from their suggestiveness, often serve so to stimulate imagination and inquiry in the mind of the reader as to lead him to the acquisition of more truth than he would get were the facts first baldly stated to him in purely scientific terminology. It is better to bury the corn for a hen, leaving just kernels enough on the surface to indicate where it is, so that she will have to scratch for it. Likewise, it is better not to uncover all the corn of truth for the student, but to leave enough uncovered to make him scratch for it. One may make bread of a mixture of ground wood or cotton cellulose, adding such sodium, potassium and phosphate salts with paraffin grease as to answer the chemical requirements of a balanced ration for human consumption; but the digestive organs of man would be unable to digest and assimilate the unpalatable product. Likewise, a vast amount of scientific information may be served in so dry and unpalatable a way as not to be either relished or easily assimilated by the mind. Food for the sustenance of the mind, just like food for the sustenance of the body, is better when flavored and seasoned to the taste. With the exception of a short intermission passed with the American army and navy outside the island, it kept me there in the midst of the events shaping the destiny of the Antilles. Impressions of these events as they appeared to me were published in various j ournals. They were record ed from time to time as they were caught up at the moment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fortune of the Republic: And Other Addresses Upon the America of to-Day and to-Morrow As for morals, it is enough to say that the surety companies for bank clerks and men of position tell us that for three years the losses through dishonest clerks have been steadily falling, while the Conscience Fund in Wash ington has been steadily rising. In the reli gious world there have never been so many men going to church. And having preached in fac tory towns and large cities, from New York to San Francisco and preached every day in the week, I have found that the people will crowd any theater, any church, any hall, at any hour from nine o'clock in the morning until ten O'clock at night, to hear straight sermons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Americanism The American people have short memories. That is but natural. As history is measured, the United States is but a youth, and, as befits normal youth, self-sufficient and self-reliant, we have had little desire or need of dwelling upon the past. America has been busy dreaming and thinking of the morrow, with its duties and opportunities; busy exploring, settling and developing a new continent; engaged in construction rather than reflection. As a nation, we inherited no racial enmities or religious antipathies which made it natural to keep alive the memories of ancient grudges or necessary to appeal to ancient fears in order to maintain our national unity. This was not accidental. "There is a divinity which shapes our ends" and orders the destinies of nations. It was necessary to our establishment as a nation, to the sturdy, healthy development of our institutions that we be free to work out our problems, uninfluenced and unfettered by old prejudices and hatreds. It was necessary that our fathers wholly discard the institutions and practices of European civilization, grown fetid, and model America's government along wholly new and wholesome lines. But now we are developed physically; our frontiers have disappeared. We are developed politically; our institutions are firmly established and our national unity and solidarity tested and proved. America has reached maturity, that age when its future is served better by caution than by daring, and the interests and welfare of its citizens promoted better by holding fast to that which has proved true and enduring than by experimenting with the novel and untried. At various times in our national life there have come testing periods when, standing at the parting of the ways, the people have been called upon to choose between keeping the faith of their fathers and following the call of visionaries and the self-seeking ambitious. America has just passed through such a crisis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Story of the United States of America: Told for Young People It has seemed advisable, in view of the chain of events that have made the close of the nineteenth century notable years in the history of the Repub lic, to bring this True Story of the United States as nearly as possible to date, and thus include the stirring episode of the war with Spain. This new material is here thankfully offered to those young Americans who have, by their approval and appreciation, made this book so gratifying a success. May they live to be old Americans, proud of their native land, worthy of it and loyal to it; as it takes position far in the van, among the great nations of the twentieth century.
