Book excerpt: He’s been a lone wolf for centuries, the last of his species. A secret. And then she enters his life. But is she the future he’d never imagined he could have...or is she his worst nightmare? Who is the hunted, and the hunter? Kitt Newton accepted the fact he’s the last known dire wolf shifter on the planet centuries ago. He’s okay with that. Work keeps him busy. Can’t think about being alone when he’s busy protecting people—humans—after all. And who really needs to be mated for life? However, when he’s captured by a mysterious hunter, the last person he expects to save him is Amber Calegari, a woman he met at a café a few weeks ago. Amber has spent her life studying dinosaurs. Specifically canis dirus from the late Pleistocene period. She’d thought she’d gone mad when she found evidence of an ancient human/dire wolf species. And even madder when she followed the trail to LA...and a man called Kitt Newton. Surely the massive hunk of burly hotness couldn’t be some kind of paranormal creature? Right? And if he is, shouldn’t she—as a scientist—reveal his existence to the world? An apex predator has no right being drawn to a weak, fragile human, but is Kitt mistaken about Amber? And if he is, what the hell is he going to do about it, especially when he feels the mating bond begin to burn within him whenever she is near... International Award-Winning paranormal romantic suspense author Lexxie Couper pens a grippingl tale in Book 3 of her Guarded Souls series, Amber's Heat. *Not intended for readers under the age of 18. Book excerpt: The Poinars are world leaders in the study of amber fossils and have spent years examining the uniquely rich supply that has survived from the ancient forests of the Dominican Republic. They draw on their research here to reconstruct in words, drawings, and spectacular color photographs the ecosystem that existed on the island of Hispaniola between fifteen and forty-five million years ago. The Poinars present richly detailed drawings of how the forests once appeared. They discuss how and when life colonized Hispaniola and what caused some forms to become extinct. Along the way, they describe how amber is formed, how and where it has been preserved, and how it is mined, sold, and occasionally forged for profit today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amber is the collective name for a suite of programs that allow users to carry out molecular dynamics simulations, particularly on biomolecules. None of the individual programs carries this name, but the various parts work reasonably well together, and provide a powerful framework for many common calculations.[1, 2] The term Amber is also used to refer to the empirical force fields that are implemented here.[3, 4] It should be recognized, however, that the code and force field are separate: several other computer packages have implemented the Amber force fields, and other force fields can be implemented with the Amber programs. Further, the force fields are in the public domain, whereas the codes are distributed under a license agreement. The Amber software suite is divided into two parts: AmberTools23, a collection of freely available programs mostly under the GPL license, and Amber22, which is centered around the pmemd simulation program, and which continues to be licensed as before, under a more restrictive license. Amber22 represents a significant change from the most recent previous version, Amber20. (We have moved to numbering Amber releases by the last two digits of the calendar year, so there are no odd-numbered versions.) Please see https://ambermd.org for an overview of the most important changes. AmberTools is a set of programs for biomolecular simulation and analysis. They are designed to work well with each other, and with the “regular” Amber suite of programs. You can perform many simulation tasks with AmberTools, and you can do more extensive simulations with the combination of AmberTools and Amber itself. Most components of AmberTools are released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). A few components are in the public domain or have other open-source licenses. See the README file for more information.

First published in 2012, this catalogue presents fifty-six Etruscan, Greek, and Italic carved ambers from the Getty Museum's collection—the second largest body of this material in the United States and one of the most important in the world. The ambers date from about 650 to 300 BC. The catalogue offers full description of the pieces, including typology, style, chronology, condition, and iconography. Each piece is illustrated. The catalogue is preceded by a general introduction to ancient amber (which was also published in 2012 as a stand-alone print volume titled Amber and the Ancient World). Through exquisite visual examples and vivid classical texts, this book examines the myths and legends woven around amber—its employment in magic and medicine, its transport and carving, and its incorporation into jewelry, amulets, and other objects of prestige. This publication highlights a group of remarkable amber carvings at the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Book excerpt: Spanning centuries and continents, a beautifully illustrated history of humanity’s enduring enthrallment with a seemingly banal substance: petrified tree sap, or amber. Amber: From Antiquity to Eternity is a history of human engagement with amber across three millennia. The book vividly describes our conceptions, stories, and political and scholarly disputes about amber, as well as issues of national and personal identity, religion, art, literature, music, and science. Rachel King rewrites amber’s history for the twenty-first century, tackling thorny ethical and moral questions regarding humanity’s relationship with amber in the past, as well our connection with it today. With the Earth facing unprecedented challenges, amber—the natural time capsule, and preserver of key information about the planet’s evolutional history—promises to offer invaluable insights into what comes next.
