Book excerpt: This collection of essays analyzes the many ways in which comic book and film superheroes have been revised or rewritten in response to changes in real-world politics, social mores, and popular culture. Among many topics covered are the jingoistic origin of Captain America in the wake of the McCarthy hearings, the post-World War II fantasy-feminist role of Wonder Woman, and the Nietzschean influences on the "sidekick revolt" in the 2004 film The Incredibles.

Book excerpt: A vibrant portrait of American swimmer Michael Phelps—the dominant athlete at the 2004 Olympics—who has relentlessly pushed himself, promoted his sport, and appears poised to ultimately accumulate the most gold medals in Olympic history Before he was old enough to have a driver's license, Michael Phelps had a world record. Before he ever took a college class or turned 20, he had earned distinction by winning 8 medals—6 gold and 2 bronze—at the Athens Olympics, the most in non-boycotted Games. Along the way, he captivated an American television audience and confounded the critics who questioned his ambition. Amazing Pace: • provides the most revealing look yet at a young man who became a world-class athlete before he had the chance to grow up—by respected Baltimore Sun journalist Paul McMullen, who followed Phelps's rise from an obscure 14-year-old to the most scrutinized competitor at the world's biggest sporting event • details the plotting of his career, from turning professional at age 16, to the management of the first crises he encountered Paul McMullen's 5 years of observation add dramatic context to the life of a young athlete whose rise to prominence coincided with the tumult of the first Summer Olympics after 9/11. No Olympian has ever earned 10 gold medals in a career, but Michael Phelps is on pace to achieve that milestone at the 2008 Games in Beijing, China.

This book was released on 2012-11-08 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 4 August 2012 Jessica Ennis kicked off what some described as the greatest night in British sporting history. For her it was the end of a long, winding, and sometimes harrowing road. Nobody was under more pressure at the London Olympics than 'the face of the Games'. Yet Jessica delivered the heptathlon gold medal, and the huge outpouring of relief she showed afterwards hinted at the roller-coaster journey she had been on. Behind the smiles and politeness, Jessica has endured much. Bullied at school for being small, she proved to critics and rivals alike that size really didn't matter. Hers is an inspiring tale of following your dreams no matter what life throws at you. In 2008 Jessica thought her career might be over when she was injured on the eve of the Olympic Games in Beijing. But she overcame this setback to rebuild her career and technique, becoming the world and European champion in successive years. Her biggest test was yet to come, though, when her rivals overhauled her in the build-up to London. Unbelievable is a refreshingly candid account of her rise to fame in a highly charged world in which body image issues and drug abuses lurk. From the unique pressures facing her, to behind-the-scenes glimpses into the greatest show on earth, and a revealing account of her love-hate relationship with her long-term coach, Jessica reveals the truth behind the smiles for the first time. Unbelievable includes exclusive behind-the-scenes photos. This is the story of how the girl next door became London's poster girl, and how an ordinary woman used an extraordinary talent to claim the title of the world's greatest all-round female sports star.

Book excerpt: Small-cap stocks, those publicly traded companies with market capitalizations less than $2 billion, can yield significant gains that are impossible to find in larger stocks. They've also proven to be among the most attractive investments after a financial downturn. Unfortunately, information about how to successfully invest in these smaller companies has been hard to find—until now. Author Ian Wyatt is dedicated to helping investors find great companies at bargain prices before Wall Street or Main Street catches on. As the Chief Investment Strategist of SmallCapInvestor.com, he's guided countless individuals in their quest to capture small-cap investing success. Now, with The Small-Cap Investor, Wyatt will help you do the same. Throughout the book, Wyatt clearly outlines his proven investment process and the systems that are involved—detailing eight straightforward steps you need to take to find, research, and analyze small-cap stocks that could put big gains in your portfolio. Page by page, he takes the time to explain the essential criteria involved in picking the right stocks and timing your buy/sell decisions. Topics touched upon include: Identifying growth trends and market sectors positioned for rapid growth in the years to come Secrets for finding undiscovered small caps before they are embraced by the financial media and institutional investors Understanding the fundamentals of a potential investment, including products, services, and management's ability to run the business Along the way, Wyatt not only shows you how to find winners, but also addresses how to avoid losers. This is particularly important for investors who have experienced losses in their portfolios, and are looking to grow their portfolios in the coming years. Many of today's top large-cap companies—from Microsoft to Wal-Mart—all started out small and grew to become dominant forces in their respective industries. Investors who bought these great companies early on profited handsomely. By following Wyatt's guidance, and understanding his strategies for finding winners, you'll have a huge edge over other investors and be in a better position to profit from the exponential growth of the right small-cap companies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Peter Drucker dictated to the US auto industry in the seventies and the latter followed suit with impressive gains for its constituents that costs must be price-driven he not merely repudiated the well established principle of marginal cost determining the price but also sent the strong message across that the economics that mattered to managers was what ruled over the market and not what academic theory laid down. The Ford Company priced its luxury limousine, Mustang, at $1995 on the basis of Drucker's diktat and made a huge profit. Indeed, it emerges that several US manufacturers acted on that very basis and made themselves largely competitive. The record of the eighties tells us that American industry paid a heavy price for its retreat after a decade or so to the regime of cost-based pricing. Drucker seemed to entertain a personal dislike for Keynes and had several harsh things to say about The General Theory. But, he generally accepted Keynes' demand side economics. Both Drucker and Tom Peters sought to dovetail economic theory to the compulsions of the market place. The key message that aspiring and practising managers alike get from these titans is that a good part of conventional economic theory is irrelevant to the demands that managerial functions make on their expertise and professionalism. Price-based costing, for instance, is the first step towards managerial excellence. Companies, which perform well, could have achieved a high level of competitiveness on that basis. The toppers in the corporate arena globally and in the limited Indian context could hardly be prospering with the backward looking cost-based pricing strategy. True management lies in managing costs so as to offer products and services at prices that the market can bear. Globally, the best working strategy is often differential costing and pricing for diverse markets, but excellence is identified only with competitive costing that is price-determined. In the early sixties, the joke one heard about the pioneering research institutions in the country was that the bigwigs there were still stuck with the classical economics of Alfred Marshall, but obviously this was quite unfair and the economic academia generally was well versed in Keynesianism. The Indian economist, Dr. V.K.R.V. Rao’s celebrated rejection in 1949 of Keynesian theory as inappropriate to developing economies, in fact, underlines this aspect. Finally, is there any scope for transplantation of the indifference curves theory, which dictates that the consumer is indifferent in regard to the choice of market baskets? Yes, we can do this in regard to all petro goods subsidised or otherwise although we should remember that differential State duties on these goods as much as the rates of excise overall contest the assumption of indifference. Generally, where subsidies are uniformly available to all consumers, this theory can be said to retain its validity. A uniform system of VAT which is the ultimate goal should uphold the theory. I would close this paper with this. I suppose, economics should be re-written on the basis of what happens in the market place, by how the market behaves as much as how policymakers and administrators as well as regulators play their game.
