Rediscovering America answers that question, and it’s like no other history you have ever read. More than an account of people, dates, and events, this story is about the hidden hand of a purposeful historical development where the main actors are colorful characters, participating in an American drama of little known but remarkable events where overcoming incredible odds of failure is more unbelievable and engaging than fiction. And while each chapter is a stand-alone tale—some quite wild—about what is behind each of the American holidays, the page- and chapter-turning appeal of Rediscovering America is in the narratives that link the holiday stories together, revealing an account of progress and redemption in America covering over four hundred years—never before told in a concise and readable book.

The last passenger pigeon, which once covered the skies of North America, died in captivity in 1904. Common North American Bird Families North America is home to a number of bird species and families. Below, are some of these species. Anatidae is one common North American bird family. This group includes geese, swans, and ducks. There are a number of types of Anatidae and some are more commonly found in more areas than others. For instance, the Canadian goose is typically found in Canada and the northern states in the US. Strigidae is another common type of North American bird. The owl is the kind of bird that belongs to this family. In the US, the Snowy Owl is the heaviest owl, followed by the Great Horned Owl. Another popular North American bird family is the Columbidae. Many people are not too fond of one member of this family, the pigeon. This family does, however, include doves. Many of the birds that belong to this family are found in urban areas throughout the continent. The penguin belongs to the Spheniscidae family, another common North American bird. Unlike many other birds, this family prefers colder climates. Therefore, they are typically found in Northern Canada and Alaska. Apodidae is a North American bird family that spends most of its life flying. Their short legs do not allow them to settle on the ground very long. Swift birds make up this family. Pelecanidae is a popular bird family in North America, but differs from many other birds in that they spend most of their time in the water. Also, these birds have four webbed toes. This group includes egrets, herons, and bitterns. The Phoenicopteridae family also calls North America home. The bird most people are most familiar with in this family are flamingos. What makes this bird unique from other birds is its height; they can stand up to five feet tall! They love warmer climates, such as the Caribbean Islands and Florida.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In his magisterial Great American City, Robert J. Sampson puts social scientific data behind an argument that we all feel and experience everyday: the neighborhood you live in has a big effect on your life and the city you live in. Not only does your neighborhood determine where your nearest hospital is, what kind of schools your children can attend, or how many police officers you might encounter (and how they respond to you), it affects how you feel, how you think about the world and your place in it. Like many sociologists before him, Sampson looks to Chicago to make his insightful interventions, based on extensive data collected across the city's diverse neighborhoods. This edition includes a new afterword by Sampson reflecting on changes in Chicago and the country that have occurred since the book was initially published. He notes the increase in gun violence, both among civilians and police killings of civilians, as well as steady or growing rates of segregation despite an increase in diversity. With these changes have come new research, much of it a continuation or elaboration of the work in Great American City. He updates readers on the status of the research initiative that serves as the basis of Great American City, the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN), and summarizes how scholars have taken up his work. Many of these scholars have new tools at their disposal with the rise of big data; Sampson remarks on these changes in the field"--

You could say we're the #1 nation at being the best at greatness. But as perfect as America is in every single way, America is broken! And we can't exchange it because we're 236 years past the 30-day return window. Look around--we don't make anything anymore, we've mortgaged our future to China, and the Apologist-in-Chief goes on world tours just to bow before foreign leaders. Worse, the L.A. Four Seasons Hotel doesn't even have a dedicated phone button for the Spa. You have to dial an extension! Where did we lose our way?! It's high time we restored America to the greatness it never lost! Luckily, America Again will singlebookedly pull this country back from the brink. It features everything from chapters, to page numbers, to fonts. Covering subject's ranging from healthcare ("I shudder to think where we'd be without the wide variety of prescription drugs to treat our maladies, such as think-shuddering") to the economy ("Life is giving us lemons, and we're shipping them to the Chinese to make our lemon-flavored leadonade") to food ("Feel free to deep fry this book-it's a rich source of fiber"), Stephen gives America the dose of truth it needs to get back on track.

Book excerpt: Few countries around the world offer the variety of landscapes and ecosystems that the United States does, representing everything from desert to mountains to seashore to wide rolling plains. Equally fascinating American cities are full of ethnic enclaves, famous neighborhoods and landmarks recognizable around the world. The national park system of the United States comprises 84 million acres of land; the country is home to more than 17,000 museums large and small. filled with striking photographs, this book presents both impressive man made sights like the Brooklyn Bridge, the world's longest suspension bridge when it was completed in 1883, and natural wonders like the 277-mile long Grand Canyon. More intimate settings are explored as well, including Pittsburgh's Andy Warhol Museum and the Live Oak Friends Meeting House in Texas with its single work of art, the meditative Skyspace. Brief text and captions provide background and history about subjects such as the great battles of the American Revolution and the inspirational activism of the civil rights era. From jazz to baseball to drive-ins, the inventive spirit of this relatively young nation never lets up, and this volume matches that energy. In this book, the 50 states have been arranged into the six commonly used, though unofficial, regions loosely grouped by geography and climate, though the individuality of each state cannot help but shine through.
