Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bravo for tomatoes, beans and kale. But what’s next for the ardent home gardener? Wheats, including farro, spelt and kamut, are surprisingly easy and very rewarding backyard crops. They can be planted as early as the ground can be worked in spring and harvested mid-summer to make room for fall crops. These ancient food sources can be milled for flour, sprouted or eaten as whole grains to retain their natural amino acids, fibre, vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids and probiotics, among other benefits. In addition to wheat, there are also heirloom cultivars of barley and oats that offer an abundant way for gardeners to harvest fibre, protein and carbohydrates. Buckwheat makes an excellent grain substitute and attracts many beneficial insects. Seeds like soybeans, flax, amaranth, quinoa and Styrian pumpkin are very high in protein and there are many beautiful types that are easy to grow. Expert gardener Dan Jason provides gardening advice and recommends varieties that are adapted to Canadian conditions. Once the harvest is in, it’s time to celebrate with Michele Genest’s fifty vibrant vegetarian recipes featuring the garden’s bounty. Ranging from the simple (Pumpkin Seed Butter Cookies) to the sophisticated (Beet and Triticale Gnocchi with Kale Pesto), the recipes in this exciting garden-to-kitchen volume will inspire readers to expand their horizons when it comes to growing and cooking grains and seeds.

Book excerpt: Destiny will not wait forever. In the final chapter of the Daughter of Zyanya series from Morgan J. Muir, a vampire is caught between saving her son, rescuing her love, and fulfilling her destiny. Mariah knows all too well to pain of burning: from her transformation into a vampire to the tortuous ways her master burns her hair to keep her in line. Even so, she would have no qualms doing the same to the man who made her a vampire, especially to save her still-mortal son. But she can't defeat him without help, though she has tried. Any further missteps will cost her her son's life. Mikhael has finally freed himself from the unwanted attentions of his false wife, but remains under the absolute control of his vampire sire. The only thing that keeps him from throwing himself into the flames is the soul of the dark-haired woman who haunts him, desperate to protect her son. Could she be the key to his freedom? Mariah has bided her time, growing her strength and skills, desperate to keep her son safe. As Mikhael and Mariah are pulled inextricably toward each other, the danger from their respective masters grows. But, come life or death, prophecy will be fulfilled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the development of genetic resources in amaranths, with a major focus on genomics, reverse, and forward genetics tools and strategies that have been developed for crop improvement. Amaranth is an ancient crop native to the New World. Interest in amaranths is being renewed, due to their adaptability, stress tolerance, and nutritional value. There are about 65 species in the genus, including Amaranthus caudatus L., A. cruentus L., and A. hypochondriacus L., which are primarily grown as protein-rich grains or pseudocereals. The genus also includes major noxious weeds (e.g., A. palmeri). The amaranths are within the Caryophyllales order and thus many species (e.g., A. tricolor) produce red (betacyanin) or yellow (betaxanthin) betalain pigments, which are chemically distinct from the anthocyanins responsible for red pigmentation in other plants. A. hypochondriacus, which shows disomic inheritance (2n = 32; n= 466 Mb), has been sequenced and annotated with 23,059 protein-coding genes. Additional members of the genus are now also been sequenced including weedy amaranths, other grain amaranths, and their putative progenitors.

Being a Chef and herbalist for over 25 years, made it a lot easier for me than most to prepare, alter and come up with new cooking ideas. Some are under the impression that once you cook something that's alkaline you can destroy its alkalinity. This is far from the truth. For an example, tomatoes contain lycopene, a form of antioxidant. Raw tomatoes have a total antioxidant potential of about 80, but if you cook the tomatoes the antioxidant potential increases six-fold. This is because the raw tomato has been transformed to trans-lycopene in the cooked version do to the heat infusion, and trans-lycopene is much more readily absorbed by the body. This is the same with most foods. Finally a book that gives you the alkaline food list and how to prepare and cook them, so you can n:main healthy, energized, and vitalized. Peace and Blessings. Slay Alkaline! Keith Exum, CEO Alkaline Foods LLC

Book excerpt: A history of COVID-19 and the sociopolitical crises that led to the 2020 global pandemic The COVID-19 pandemic shocked the world. It shouldn’t have. Since this century’s turn, epidemiologists have warned of new infectious diseases. Indeed, H1N1, H7N9, SARS, MERS, Ebola Makona, Zika, and a variety of lesser viruses have emerged almost annually. But what of the epidemiologists themselves? Some bravely descended into the caves where bat species hosted coronaviruses, including the strains that evolved into the COVID-19 virus. Yet, despite their own warnings, many of the researchers appear unable to understand the true nature of the disease—as if they are dead to what they’ve seen. Dead Epidemiologists is an eclectic collection of commentaries, articles, and interviews revealing the hidden-in-plain-sight truth behind the pandemic: Global capital drove the deforestation and development that exposed us to new pathogens. Rob Wallace and his colleagues—ecologists, geographers, activists, and, yes, epidemiologists—unpack the material and conceptual origins of COVID-19. From deepest Yunnan to the boardrooms of New York City, this book offers a compelling diagnosis of the roots of COVID-19, and a stark prognosis of what—without further intervention—may come.
