Book excerpt: Okay, let’s get one thing straight. I didn’t write this book to de-convert anyone. Honest. So, if you’re a devout Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Mormon, Catholic, Scientologist, or whatever, you just keep on doin’ what you’re doin’. No offense, but, as long as you’re a good person who doesn’t try to shove your beliefs down my throat or protest at military funerals, I really couldn’t give a rodent’s rectum about your spirituality. It’s none of my business. Go to church. Don’t eat pork. Worship Ganesh. Pray your rosary. Do…well, whatever the fuck those batshit crazy Scientologists do. Jump on couches and pretend you’re on Oprah? Whatever. If it keeps you from going on a multi-state killing spree armed with grenades and an Uzi, knock yourself out! For your information, I wrote this book, well, for your information. That’s it. Over the years I’ve been asked more and more how I went from being a Catholic to a teen atheist to a rabid Bible thumper (with a mullet!) to a (somewhat) mild-mannered atheist and I’ve always said, “It’s a really long story. I’ll write a book about it someday. I promise.” Now, after repeating this oath a bazillion or two times, frankly, I’m tired of stalling. So, instead of procrastinating more or becoming rude to (mostly) well-meaning folks who are just curious, here ya go. I done wrote a book about it. So if this book offends you, don’t launch a campaign to re-convert me. Don’t carpet bomb me with hellfire and brimstone e-mails. If you’re really pissed off, I’m so nice I’ll give you a list of names and home addresses of all the people who’ve pestered me for the story contained within these pages. So go bother THEM! It’s their fault this book exists, not mine! Incidentally, if you feel so inclined, you can pray for me. That’s cool. Whatever lights your altar candles, pardner. That’s none of my business either.

Book excerpt: The once dark shadowy corner of the author's heart is finally flickering to life. For years it was a place of spiritual turmoil and inconsistency concerning complex matters of faith. As an impressionable child Tom Reilly fell for the God story. As a free-spirited teenager he was a devoted Catholic. As a rationally minded adult he is a devout atheist. A life long inner search for a genuine God failed miserably. He is now embarrassed that he ever believed at all. He sees God as possibly the greatest sham ever. Only now does his world make any sense. Ireland is a country where, for years, religion did not unite - it divided. Having emerged virtually unscathed from centuries of oppression, today the Catholic Church, not just in Ireland but also worldwide, faces its greatest crisis ever. No longer under threat from the penal laws and such, these days the Church is persecuted by abuse scandals from forces within. Its long-term survival is no longer as inevitable as it once seemed. A born again skeptic, Reilly has already succeeded in challenging one of Ireland's sacred cows; Oliver Cromwell's war crimes, once the popular verdict of history. At a time when many of Ireland's Catholics are wondering if, to question might actually be the answer, the author's fall (jump) from grace is a challenge to believers everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bhagat Singh is a name that became synonymous with revolution in India’s struggle for Independence. This young boy brought about a change in the way people thought about freedom. He was well read and fought extensively for rights – his own, his comrades’ and his countrymen’s. A discussion with a friend soon turned into a matter of self-assessment for Bhagat Singh, leading to a discourse on why he chose to be an atheist. Even in the face of death at a very young age, his uncanny observation leads to his putting forth some pertinent questions. On another occasion, he was disappointed with his father’s plea in court for his innocence and chose to write a letter to him. This book is a collection of eighteen of his valued writings from within the walls of prison and outside it, which show us the resolve in his words, and the bravery in his acts subsequently.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Western World is becoming atheist. In the space of three generations churchgoing and religious belief have become alien to millions. We are in the midst of one of humankind's great cultural changes. How has this happened? Becoming Atheist explores how people of the sixties' generation have come to live their lives as if there is no God. It tells the life narratives of those from Britain, Western Europe, the United States and Canada who came from Christian, Jewish and other backgrounds to be without faith. Based on interviews with 85 people born in 18 countries, Callum Brown shows how gender, ethnicity and childhood shape how individuals lose religion. This book moves from statistical and broad cultural analysis to use frank, humorous and sometimes harrowing personal testimony. Becoming Atheist exposes people's role in renegotiating their own identities, and fashioning a secular and humanist culture for the Western world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jennifer Fulwiler told herself she was happy. Why wouldn't she be? She made good money as a programmer at a hot tech start-up, had just married a guy with a stack of Ivy League degrees, and lived in a twenty-first-floor condo where she could sip sauvignon blanc while watching the sun set behind the hills of Austin. Raised in a happy, atheist home, Jennifer had the freedom to think for herself and play by her own rules. Yet a creeping darkness followed her all of her life. Finally, one winter night, it drove her to the edge of her balcony, making her ask once and for all why anything mattered. At that moment everything she knew and believed was shattered. Asking the unflinching questions about life and death, good and evil, led Jennifer to Christianity, the religion she had reviled since she was an awkward, sceptical child growing up in the Bible Belt. Mortified by this turn of events, she hid her quest from everyone except her husband, concealing religious books in opaque bags as if they were porn and locking herself in public bathroom stalls to read the Bible. Just when Jennifer had a profound epiphany that gave her the courage to convert, she was diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition-and the only treatment was directly at odds with the doctrines of her new-found faith. Something other than God is a poignant, profound and often funny tale of one woman who set out to find the meaning of life and discovered that true happiness sometimes requires losing it all.

Book excerpt: A guide to meaningful life choices for living an ethical life without theology or religious faith. How Does an Atheist Respond to the Question, What Is the Purpose of Life? For a Christian, it is faith that gives their life purpose. In his best-selling book The Purpose Driven™ Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?, Rick Warren says, “You must begin with God. You were born by his purpose and for his purpose.” But as a non-believer, your purpose resides in yourself; it is yours alone to discover and develop. It’s about choosing to live your own life for your own reasons. No one can dictate your purpose. You decide. This book will help you understand and appreciate why freely choosing to help and cooperate with others is the true path to finding purpose. Life does not need purpose: Purpose needs life. To punctuate this point, The Good Atheist includes inspiring biographies of humanity’s true heroes—men and women who did not waste their lives as slaves to a God, but rather found purpose in enhancing life on this Earth for all of us.

This professional setback spirals him into a spiritual quandary, prompting him to delve deeper into the Catholic faith that has always perplexed him. As part of his exploration, he even commits to celibacy while interviewing priests and religious figures. However, his journey takes an unexpected turn with the entrance of Evelyne, a captivating Parisian. She challenges Peter’s binary perception of women and ignites a passion within him. Seeking answers, Peter travels to Catholic Ireland, a land where divorce and abortion are taboo. From trailing a Jesuit up a mountain to enduring the austere rituals of Lough Derg, Peter’s journey is both enlightening and tumultuous. Along the way, he encounters priests whose intentions blur the lines between the sacred and the profane. Torn between his spiritual calling and the allure of Evelyne, Peter’s quest culminates in Rome. There, amidst the sanctity of the Holy See and in the company of a priest, he faces a life-altering decision: to answer the divine call or to embrace the love that tugs at his heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his new study, Beyond Atheism, Beyond God, author Philip A. Stahl uses atheism as a rational stepping stone to arrive at an emergent conception of the universe, exposing features that might be described as transcendent. He presents an impersonal approach to Being that is devoid of any specific religious overtones or affi liations. Each person becomes a quantum-based co-creator in his or her own right, according to physicist Henry Stapp. As such, we are able to thereby see ourselves and our humanity in a new light, as opposed to being merely reactive cogs in a vast mechanical-reductionist machine. Effectively, we emerge as much more than assemblies of molecules. This volume, the fourth and final entry in Stahls series on atheism, seeks to arrive at a transcendent concept of being that also surpasses absolutism and nave or dogmatic deity templates. It considers the development of a more realistic, cogent and effective ethics and morality less likely to be exploited by the power mongers or sacred source apologists, and it answers the question of whether God existsthough not in the way one would normally assume.

Book excerpt: What does it take to be a great leader? In a word: character. This unique book by decorated U.S. Marine Corps veteran Donovan Campbell, the New York Times bestselling author of Joker One, draws on his years of training and combat experience to reveal the specific virtues that underpin effective leadership—and how anyone can stand up, serve others, and make a difference in the world by bringing out the best in a team. The Leader’s Code is a practical action plan that can be applied to any situation in which exemplary leadership is required, whether that be at home or in the workplace. Moreover, The Leader’s Code unpacks the military servant-leader model—a leader must take care of his mission first, his team second, and himself a distant third—and explains why this concept of self-sacrifice is so needed in today’s world. Focusing on the development of character as the foundation of servant-leadership, Campbell identifies character’s six key attributes: humility, excellence, kindness, discipline, courage, and wisdom. Then, drawing on lessons from his time in the Corps and stories from history, Scripture, and American business, he shows us how to develop those virtues in order to take the helm with confidence, conviction, and a passion to bring out the best in others. Being a leader is about being worthy of being followed. True leaders, Campbell argues, foster compassion for others and they pursue excellence in all that they do. They are humble and know how to self-correct. Campbell’s exploration of these vital qualities is wide-ranging, as he takes us from the boardrooms of the world’s most successful companies to the Infantry Officer Course, the intense twelve-week training gauntlet that Marines use to prepare their leaders to sacrifice themselves for the welfare of others. With faith in our political and business leaders at an all-time low, America is in the midst of a crisis of trust. Yet public opinion polls show that there is one institution that still commands widespread respect because of its commitment to character and sacrifice: the United States military. The Leader’s Code shows that this same servant-leader model can help us all become our best selves—and provide a way forward for our nation. Advance praise for The Leader’s Code “A refreshing model for leadership, offering convincing principles and motivating examples that are sure to make a difference in a leader’s personal and professional life. I can’t remember a leadership book that has had more influence on my thinking.”—Steve Reinemund, dean of business, Wake Forest University, and retired chairman and CEO, PepsiCo “Donovan Campbell has written a superb, thoughtful, all-encompassing examination of leadership and leaders. His key lessons, easily understood and well articulated, are applicable at home, within the community, and to professionals in all walks of life. The Leader’s Code is an important book for anyone concerned about today’s leadership crisis in our country and in our communities.”—General Mike Hagee, USMC (Ret.), 33rd Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps “Donovan Campbell nails it as he speaks to our country’s need for leadership at every level: at home, in the marketplace, in education, in government, and in the military. The Leader’s Code is a clear call to be focused on the right mission, in the right way, and at the right time. This is a thoughtful book that will keep you awake at night and challenge you to dream in the daytime!”—Dennis Rainey, president and CEO, FamilyLife

Sheen, Norman Vincent Peale, and Billy Graham were America’s most popular religious leaders during the mid-twentieth century period known as the golden years of the Age of Extremes. It was part of an era that encompassed polemic contrasts of good and evil on the world stage in political philosophies and international relations. The 1950s and early 1960s, in particular, were years of high anxiety, competing ideologies, and hero/villain mania in America. Sheen was the voice of reason who spoke against those conflicting ideologies which were hostile to religious faith and democracy; Peale preached the gospel of reassurance, self-assurance, and success despite ominous global threats; and Graham was the heroic model of faith whose message of conversion provided Americans an identity and direction opposite to atheistic communism. This study looks at how and why their rhetorical leadership, both separately and together, contributed to the climate of an extreme era and influenced a national religious revival.
