S'appuyant sur ses expériences personnelles, il se met en quête d'une solution financière aux difficultés socio-économiques engendrées par la question sociale. En se faisant le promoteur de l'idée de la coopération, il cherche à améliorer la condition des classes populaires. C'est ainsi qu'il fonde la première caisse populaire. À sa mort, survenue le 31 octobre 1920, il aura participé personnellement à la fondation de 163 caisses populaires, dont 136 au Québec, 18 en Ontario et 9 aux États-Unis.Alphonse Desjardins est une figure marquante de notre histoire. Guy Bélanger nous fait découvrir un homme pragmatique, inscrit dans son époque, qui a contribué de façon exceptionnelle au développement social et économique du Québec.
