Book Synopsis Corpora for University Language Teachers by : Carol Taylor Torsello
Download or read book Corpora for University Language Teachers written by Carol Taylor Torsello and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is made up of 17 chapters which have developed out of papers and workshop sessions presented at the event entitled «Corpora: Seminar and Workshops», held at the University of Padua, March 29-31, 2007. It maintains the straightforward, practical approach which characterized that event, meant as an introduction to the use of corpora even for novices. At the same time it goes into a wide range of different applications for corpora in language teaching and language research in higher education. One of these involves the creation and use of learner corpora. Another application involves corpus-assisted research into political discourse in the media. Language for special purposes is also focussed on as a research topic, an academic discipline, and language to be translated. Multimodal corpora are also considered. Proposals are made for corpus-based research into the language of films, and into translation (and mediation) universals. A corpus-based study of text complexity in reading tests is also presented. Large-scale corpora commercially available are also discussed. An online module for translator training is presented, as is an Internet-accessible corpus of Old English poetry.

Book Synopsis Rhetoric and Demagoguery by : Patricia Roberts-Miller
Download or read book Rhetoric and Demagoguery written by Patricia Roberts-Miller and published by Southern Illinois University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Library Journal's Top 20 Best-Selling Language Titles of 2019 In a culture of profit-driven media, demagoguery is a savvy short-term rhetorical strategy. Once it becomes the norm, individuals are more likely to employ it and, in that way, increase its power by making it seem the only way of disagreeing with or about others. When that happens, arguments about policy are replaced by arguments about identity—and criticism is met with accusations that the critic has the wrong identity (weak, treacherous, membership in an out-group) or the wrong feelings (uncaring, heartless). Patricia Roberts-Miller proposes a definition of demagoguery based on her study of groups and cultures that have talked themselves into disastrously bad decisions. She argues for seeing demagoguery as a way for people to participate in public discourse, and not necessarily as populist or heavily emotional. Demagoguery, she contends, depoliticizes political argument by making all issues into questions of identity. She broaches complicated questions about its effectiveness at persuasion, proposes a new set of criteria, and shows how demagoguery plays out in regard to individuals not conventionally seen as demagogues. Roberts-Miller looks at the discursive similarities among the Holocaust in early twentieth-century Germany, the justification of slavery in the antebellum South, the internment of Japanese Americans in the United States during World War II, and the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, among others. She examines demagoguery among powerful politicians and jurists (Earl Warren, chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court) as well as more conventional populists (Theodore Bilbo, two-time governor of Mississippi; E. S. Cox, cofounder of the Anglo-Saxon Clubs of America). She also looks at notorious demagogues (Athenian rhetor Cleon, Ann Coulter) and lesser-known public figures (William Hak-Shing Tam, Gene Simmons).
Book Synopsis Why Science and Faith Belong Together by : Malcolm A. Jeeves
Download or read book Why Science and Faith Belong Together written by Malcolm A. Jeeves and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we try to understand ourselves and the world we live in, all too often we look first to science--and then, if gaps remain in our understanding, we try to fill the gaps with reference to God and our faith. Such a "god-of-the-gaps" approach has a long history and is sadly alive and well today. This book was written to provide an alternative approach, posing this basic question: How can educated Christians maintain their intellectual honesty and, at the same time, be faithful both to Scripture and to science? This book provides examples of some of the liveliest "science vs. faith" issues today and suggests ways to think constructively about each of them.

Ministry deals with people, issues, doctrine, and scripture. Sometimes, I get it right, and sometimes, not so much. Ministry can be heartwarming, and it can be heartbreaking. The book talks about both. The overall theme, though, is a statement of my faith.

Book Synopsis Adverbs of Degree in Dutch and Related Languages by : Henny Klein
Download or read book Adverbs of Degree in Dutch and Related Languages written by Henny Klein and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adverbs of degree form an intriguing part of the lexicon: numerous, multiform and everchanging. They also show a great variety in distribution. In this study, the characteristics of adverbs of degree are investigated from a semantic point of view. The main focus is on Dutch, but previous studies about English and German adverbs of degree are used to compare with and to build on. The book starts with an introduction on grading and gradability, and a classification of the adverbs according to the degree they express. Next, the different lexical sources from which the adverbs emerge and the process of grammaticalization are discussed. The main part of the book is devoted to semantic restrictions on the use of adverbs of degree, on the one hand restrictions concerning the modified elements, on the other hand those concerning the environment. Topics include absoluteness versus gradability, positive versus negative evaluation, the strengthening of negation, polarity sensitivity, the logical properties of the adverbs themselves, and restrictions to reduplication and stacking. Besides the main text, three case studies are presented in which the pecularities of some of the adverbs are investigated in depth, to show more in detail to complexities of their distribution. The appendix gives an overview of Dutch adverbs of degree.

Drawing on the political philosophy of Lyotard and through an empirical examination of the Anglo-American international order during the 1956 Suez Crisis, Bially Mattern demonstrates that states can (and do) use representational force--a forceful but non-physical form of power exercised through language--to stabilize international identity and in turn international order.
