This book was released on 1961 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey is made of the new problems introduced in the structural analysis of airplanes and missiles by the high temperatures caused by aerodynamic heating. Thermal stresses, thermal buckling, the effect of creep on stress distribution and stability, and ablation are discussed and special attention is paid to the behavior of the pure shells used in missiles. It is concluded that the modern structural analyst must acquire a knowledge of many disciplines that were of no interest to his predecessor working before World War II. Among these disciplines are thermodynamics, metallurgy, and the physics of the solid state. In all the new problems two parameters appear that did not enter classical structural analysis. The first is temperature which is the cause of all the difficulties of the modern structural designer and analyst. The second is time, because at high temperatures no structure can carry loads for indefinitely long periods. One of the most important tasks of the analyst of missiles is the determination of the lifetime of the structure. (Author).
Book Synopsis Aircraft and Missile Structures Operating at High Temperatures by : Nicholas J. Hoff

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes contributions made to the clarification of the buckling process of thin shells. One of the results was the discovery that a very slight modification of the classical boundary conditions results in a reduction in the value of the critical stress of the linear theory by a factor of about one-half. Another result of importance was that the procedure of Karman and Tsien in finding a minimal value of the post-buckling stress loads to a perfectly correct but trival result. The maximal value of the equilibrium stress of the imperfect shell reached in testing machine loading has been calculated by Prof. Hoff by two methods. The number of buckles around the circumference were shown experimentally and theoretically to decrease as the length-to-radius ratio of the shell is increased. A tie-in between buckling in testing machine loading and buckling under thermal stresses was obtained theoretically and experimentally. (Author).

Book excerpt: Time-dependent methods of analysis for colums, stiffened and unstiffened plates, and torsional members have been developed and programmed for the IBM 709 digital computer. The important material behaviors, i.e., soaking at temperatures, elastic and plastic strain, creep and residual stress and strain under varying temperature inputs, can be accounted for in the digital solutions. Two illustrative examples for obtaining allowable stresses are shown; the first for a stable structure in combined tensile and bending and the second for a column subjected to time-dependent displacements due to creep. These two examples are sufficiently typical to demonstrate the applicability of the procedures developed in this report or other procedures which give the stress-strain-deflection time history of a structure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Temperature Structures and Materials is a compilation of the proceedings of the Third Symposium on Naval Structural Mechanics held at Columbia University in New York on January 23-25, 1963. The symposium provided a forum for discussing structural mechanics under conditions of elevated temperatures. Emphasis is placed on the various aspects of structural design for elevated temperature service. The following areas are covered: material aspects of elevated temperature design; effects of high-speed environment; thermal stress analysis; and design criteria and reliability. This book is comprised of 13 chapters and begins by assessing the temperature dependence of elastic and anelastic properties in solids, followed by a discussion on the thermo-mechanical behavior of ceramics. Subsequent chapters explore the physical aspects of creep; thermal fatigue and its relation to creep rupture and mechanical fatigue; materials aspects of the re-entry problem; and problems of heat conduction and melting. Thermal stresses in viscoelastic solids are also considered, along with creep design and aspects of reliability under conditions of elevated temperature creep and fatigue. This monograph will be a valuable resource for material physicists and mechanical and structural designers concerned with the problem of elevated temperature effects on the performance and safety of modern structures.
