Book excerpt: “With its fascinating personalities that only Rinzler could describe, All Up can’t be put down.”—David Mandel, Veep executive producer All Up plunges its readers into the cloak-and-dagger espionage and blitzkrieg battles of World War II that swirled around rocketry; it introduces them to extraterrestrial phenomena, secret organizations, and the nail-biting missions launched from Cape Canaveral—as well as the secrets and unknown history behind Apollo 11’s legendary trip to the Moon. All Up tells the incredible true story of Nazi Germany’s Wernher von Braun, Soviet Russia’s Sergei Korolev, and America’s Robert Goddard as they work feverishly to fulfill their countries’ technological, military, and geopolitical objectives while satisfying their own personal obsessions. Alongside the Space Age history is the strange but well-documented trail of UFOs—one that leads to a desperate struggle in the highest corridors of power. Who will control the alien technology for their hidden agendas during the Cold War? Secret services compete worldwide in that ruthless game—and no one is a more deadly player than the mysterious agent named Rachel, hot on the trail of war criminal, former SS Brigadeführer Hans Kammler.

In this all-new collection of yarns, New York Times–bestselling author and self-proclaimed yarn Harlot Stephanie Pearl-McPhee is all wound up about life, motherhood, losing her beloved washing machine, and, of course, knitting. With trademark humor and wit that have sustained her through thick and thin, including a few misshapen sweaters and an indoor water balloon fight among her otherwise darling daughters, Pearl-McPhee deftly examines knitting, parenting, friendship, and—gasp!—even crocheting in essays that are at times touching, often hilarious, and always entertaining. Praise for Yarn Harlot “A sort of David Sedaris-like take on knitting—laugh-out-loud funny most of the time and poignantly reflective when it’s not cracking you up.” —Library Journal “Pearl-McPhee turns both typical and unique knitting experiences into very funny and articulate prose.” —Meg Swansen, Schoolhouse Press “I laughed until my stitches fell helplessly from my needles!” —Lucy Neatby, author of Cool Socks Warm Feet

You’ll be wanting more” (Urban Reviews). Malcolm and Toussaint Livingston, the siblings behind the dynamo restaurant chain Taste of Soul, work hard and play even harder—especially carefree bachelor Toussaint, who loves as much variety in his sexual conquests as he does spices in his sparerib rub. But when he meets interior designer Alexis St. Clair, his Casanova days could be over. Because Alexis refuses to become just another dish on Toussaint’s mating menu . . . As for Malcolm, he may be married with children, but that doesn’t stop him from flirting—nor does it slow down the women who want more from him than the secret recipe to the family’s BBQ sauce. These two brothers love a challenge, but what happens when bedroom games get all up in their business? Praise for Lutishia Lovely and the Business series “A great new taste in the literary world.”—Carl Weber, New York Times bestselling author “Worth every moment.”—Donna Hill, Essence® bestselling author “A great story. This should make for a fascinating new series.”—APOOO BookClub “More secrets are exposed and old enemies learn to forgive as this family faces, together, what life throws their way.”—RT Book Reviews

Book excerpt: A fascinating journey through history and culture, examining how makeup affects self-empowerment, how people have used it to define (and defy) their roles in society, and why we all need to care There is a history and a cultural significance that comes with wearing cat-eye-inspired liner or a bold red lip, one that many women feel to this day, even if we don’t realize exactly why. Increasingly, people of all genders are wrestling with what it means to be a woman living in a patriarchy, and part of that is how looking like a woman—whatever that means—affects people’s real lives. Through the stories of famous women like Cleopatra, Empress Wu, Madam C. J. Walker, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marsha P. Johnson, Rae Nudson unpacks makeup’s cultural impact—including how it can be used to shape a personal or cultural narrative, how often beauty standards align with whiteness, how and when it can be used for safety, and its function in the workplace, to name a few examples. Every woman has had to make a very personal choice about her relationship with makeup, and consciously or unconsciously, every woman knows that the choice is never entirely hers to make. This book also holds space for complicating factors, especially the ways that beauty standards differ across race, class, and culture. Engaging and informative, All Made Up will expand the discussion around what it means to participate in creating your own self-image.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was 1989 when I started building a large 1/4"= 1 foot scale model of Constitution and today, 16 years and 18,000 hours later, I honestly believe this is how she was rigged during her last chase, exactly one hour prior to her last battle against the British HMS Levant and HMS Cyane. I had already invested more than four thousand hours in the construction of this model, and had intended, upon completion of the hull, to proceed with the stepping of masts and rigging her just as I had done previously on other models. However, In February 1992, when Commander Martin presented me with an original typescript of Midshipman Edward Clifford Anderson's notes on the rigging of the ship in 1834-35 at Boston, the earliest such specific information known, I decided I would follow Midshipman Anderson's directions and record the progress, step by step, discovering for myself what was done and how. This meant creating additional scaled parts relating to sheer poles, etc. to simulate exactly how the masts and the bowsprit, etc. were stepped in this era, and for this reason. Due to the equipment available today, and rightfully so, I do not believe that Constitution, or any ship's from this era, will ever again be rigged, including the stepping of the masts, using sheer poles and tackle only, and so I chose, while this one and only opportunity lent itself, to show this pictorially.
