Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ALL ABOUT ME (and my shunt), written and illustrated by Terri Rice Bellush, is a long-overdue educational and heartwarming book about Hydrocephalus written for very young children. This fun, yet serious story is told through the eyes of a young girl named Janet. She tells us some of the typical things she likes to do, such as read books and visit her grandparents. She then explains about her Hydrocephalus on a level that young children can understand. We are then led through Janet's experience of having a shunt. She describes some of the symptoms she has when her shunt isn't working properly. We also follow her through the process of getting her shunt fixed at the hospital. Janet concludes her tale by telling us that having a shunt isn't so bad because it helps keep her alive so she can do all the things that she enjoys. Included at the end of the book are brief descriptions and simple drawings of three common types of shunts: Ventriculo-Peritoneal, Ventriculo-Pleural and Ventriculo-Atrial. This book is an excellent way to comfort and teach young children about Hydrocephalus and shunts. Reviews Unlike any other book of it's type - it talks from Janet's point of view. She covers everything from hospitalization, to knowing that 'shunts break like toys', her teachers knowing her condition, and states that 'having a shunt isn't so bad.' We recommend this book, especially to parents with young children. However, adults would enjoy it too. The illustration is unique and very child-friendly. The entire booklet was colorful, demonstrated in a way that is understandable from the very young to adults. We believe that you will find this book very worthwhile. - Debbi Fields, Executive Director - National Hydrocephalus Foundation

Book excerpt: Jodi Sampson was a typical girl growing up in a small community by the ocean. She dreamed of falling in love and a life full of good health, great times, and lots of love. Everything seemed to be on track when she married her high school sweetheart. She had some pregnancy troubles, but she hung onto her faith and had two beautiful daughters. But her sense of normalcy vanished when her brother died unexpectedly during her third pregnancy. Despite high levels of stress, she didn't miscarry. She knew from early on, then, that this child, a son she named Michael Francis, was going to be a fighter--a trait that became a double blessing when he was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor while still a toddler. Soon, Jodi's own health was threatened, too, but she relied on exercise, nutrition, and family to help her cope. Join Jodi as she proves that never giving up and relying on faith can lead to The Face of a Miracle.

She discovered at a very early age that she was unable to lie on her stomach. Doing so would cause her to see white stars in her field of vision, she would become extremely nauseated, and her head felt as if it would explode. Her life was fraught with numerous falls resulting in serious injuries, requiring frequent surgeries to attempt to correct these injuries. If the sidewalk was just the slightest bit uneven, she would inevitably trip and fall headlong onto the pavement. She began suffering from both urinary frequency and incontinence in her forties. She suffered several serious falls and incidents after she retired, making her believe that she would spend the rest of her life confined to a wheelchair.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures (PNES) can cause blackouts, collapses, involuntary movements, loss of memory and have major impact on quality of life. Whereas epilepsy is caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain, PNES are psychological-based responses to triggers inside or outside the body that are perceived as threatening by the person affected. PNES are poorly understood by the medical community. It is common for doctors to struggle to explain this diagnosis, which can leave their patients frustrated and confused. Often people are told that their PNES are caused by "stress" and sent away with no further support or advice. It is no wonder that those affected feel isolated, abandoned and hopeless about living with the condition. In Our Words: Personal Accounts of Living with Non-Epileptic Seizures shows those diagnosed with PNES that they are not alone, and how others have courageously managed to come to terms with their seizures. These heartfelt personal accounts will also allow family, friends, healthcare providers and researchers to gain more understanding of the condition and work to provide a better quality of life to those living with PNES.

And now I finally feel like I am living. 17-year-old Lewis Hine is a global phenomenon. Diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumour and water on the brain at 17 months, he wasn't expected to survive. But Lewis proved everyone wrong; he's not only surviving but thriving. In one Facebook post on his 16th birthday Lewis invited everyone to see how he faces head on the challenges from his ongoing illness, and he went viral. 30 million views later, Lewis now spearheads a campaign, Friend Finder, to make sure no one ever faces childhood illness alone. In his memoir, Lewis reaches out to anyone who may feel isolated in their lives. After 13 brain surgeries and continual health problems, life for Lewis is a daily challenge. From the sheer physical challenges - he is at high risk of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) and has a pump in his brain just to keep him alive - to the horrendous bullying he's endured, he shares how he finds the strength to overcome all this and still lead a fun and fulfilling life. With a host of admirers around the world from Elton John to Kid Ink, Lewis is living his dream - even becoming Radio 1's Teen Hero of the Year. His story will make you laugh, cry and above all, feel inspired by life's endless possibilities, looking at the stars.

With a husband who had just lost a job, two young sons, and a cross-country move on the horizon, who had time to be sick? Maria didn't have time for a common cold, let alone a major medical condition. But one day while shopping in the grocery store where she had shopped hundreds of times before, she couldn't find the milk. It was then she knew what she was feeling was more than just stress or exhaustion. There was something very wrong. After consulting a few doctors, Maria discovered she had a rare brain cyst known as a posterior fossa arachnoid cyst-a very large brain cyst. Hearing these cysts were normally asymptomatic was of little comfort, especially because she felt her mind and body slipping away more and more every day. Normal mental and physical functions were becoming harder to control. Even if the doctors didn't believe the cyst was a problem, she knew it was. It would take months of living inside a shell of a person that she'd become, months of living in a mental fogginess and sometimes even physical pain, before she would finally get the medical attention she needed. It's All in Your Head chronicles her harrowing medical odyssey and her attempts to regain some sort of semblance of her old life after treatment.

Alive is a true personal account detailing a near-death experience that a New Jersey native had while in his twenties. Originally wished to keep quiet, the individual later felt compelled to publish his story in order to have it out there for others to know. That every single person will one day die. A notion not too many are concerned about. Including himself, until having to deal with dying first handedly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last ten years the pediatric neurosurgeon has witnessed a real revolution in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric hydrocephalus, the most frequently encountered condition in everyday clinical practice. The evolution of MRI and the advent of neuroendoscopic surgery have resuscitated the interest in the classification, etiology and pathophysiology of hydrocephalus. The book offers an updated overview on the recent progress in this field, and a new approach to hydrocephalus: the reader will find in it a modern and new presentation of an old disease, where genetics, endoscopy, cost-effectiveness analyses and many other aspects of the various therapies are extensively discussed. The volume will be useful not only for neurosurgeons, but for all specialists interested in the various aspects of hydrocephalus: pediatricians, radiologists, endocrinologists, pathologists and geneticists.
