Book excerpt: We are all in search of a healthier life, through diet, exercise, supplements, and lifestyle changes. We alter how we exercise, what we eat, what we drink, and the supplements we take in search of longevity and good health. We spend millions of dollars every year on exercise programs, bottled water, procedures, supplements - to look younger and feel better. A basic building block of life, water, is essential for every living organism on the planet. We can simply sip from our taps and satisfy that thirst, or we can make the best of what we put into our bodies and ensure that every sip boosts our health. Water, taken in an alkaline form, can serve many purposes besides simple hydration inside the human body ranging from:Reducing cholesterolReducing inflammationImproving immune systemHelping with weight lossBoosting energy......and more! We are all looking for the healthiest alternative. And, as is always the case, it pays to be informed. Test your tap water, test your favorite bottled water - see which ones are the best ones to put in your mouth, not only for flavor but also for the benefits that it can provide you on a basic cellular level. For every system there is a delicate balance between acid and alkaline. Our cells, our organs, our bodies work at their own necessary pH balance. We should all do what we can to help those systems work more efficiently. If we put the right ingredients into the engine, then we get out the best results. That includes both the best food and water that are available. Sometimes the tap water that we drink falls within alkaline levels and sometimes we have to treat the water we have or buy water that is within acceptable ranges. The alkaline water should be rich with compounds such as silica, potassium, magnesium, bicarbonate, and calcium. This type of water introduces negative ions into the system and those negative ions may help to put a stop to developing diseases. With the vast array of knowledge at our fingertips and the ability to order what we need online with supplies showing up right on our doorstep, and our never-ending search for good heath, there is no longer an excuse to do anything less than the best approach to the best health that we can have.

Book excerpt: The 18th ESACT meeting was celebrated in Granada (Spain) in May 2003, and was entitled "Animal Cell Technology Meets Genomics", in order to reflect that the emerging technologies in the area of genomics, proteomics and other "-omics"-type disciplines will provide key technological assets to increase knowledge and open new horizons in animal cell technology. During the meeting a variety of top-class emerging technologies were presented together with the lastest advances in more mature industrial areas. The meeting was opened by a first session devoted to the understanding of basic cellular mechanisms, and four sessions focused on applied aspects of animal cell technology: Cell-based therapies and gene-based therapies, target discovery and biopharmaceuticals. The Granada Meeting has also seen a special focus on forefront industrial case studies. The spirit and scientific excellence of the 18th ESACT meeting is now reflected in different chapters of the book. The book presents, in form of short papers, a high number of the contributions to the meeting, and has been prepared with the aim to provide a relevant reference of the current research efforts in Animal Cell Technology.

Book excerpt: Dietary Reference Intakes for Water, Potassium, Sodium, Chloride, and Sulfate The Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) are quantitative estimates of nutrient intakes to be used for planning and assessing diets for healthy people. This new report, the sixth in a series of reports presenting dietary reference values for the intakes of nutrients by Americans and Canadians, establishes nutrient recommendations on water, potassium, and salt for health maintenance and the reduction of chronic disease risk. Dietary Reference Intakes for Water, Potassium, Sodium, Chloride, and Sulfate discusses in detail the role of water, potassium, salt, chloride, and sulfate in human physiology and health. The major findings in this book include the establishment of Adequate Intakes for total water (drinking water, beverages, and food), potassium, sodium, and chloride and the establishment of Tolerable Upper Intake levels for sodium and chloride. The book makes research recommendations for information needed to advance the understanding of human requirements for water and electrolytes, as well as adverse effects associated with the intake of excessive amounts of water, sodium, chloride, potassium, and sulfate. This book will be an invaluable reference for nutritionists, nutrition researchers, and food manufacturers.

This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of expressing acidity as the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration was defined and termed pH in the beginning of the 20th century. The general usefulness of the pH concept for life science was recognized and later gained importance to analytical research. Reports on results of pH measurements from living skin established the term acid mantle - the skin's own protective shield that maintains a naturally acid pH. It is invisible to the eye but crucial to the overall wellbeing of skin. Chronic alkalization can throw this acid mantle out of balance, leading to inflammation, dermatitis, and atopic skin diseases. It is therefore no surprise, that skin pH shifts have been observed in various skin pathologies. It is also obvious that the pH in topically applied preparations may play an important role. Optimal pH and buffer capacity within topical preparations not only support stability of active ingredients and auxiliary materials, but may also increase absorption of the non-ionized species of an acidic or a basic active ingredient. They may even open up opportunities to modify and "correct" skin pH and hence accelerate barrier recovery and maintain or enhance barrier integrity. Further efforts are needed to standardize and improve pH measurements in biological media or pharmaceutical/cosmetic vehicles to increase and ensure quality, comparability, and relevance of research data. In this volume, we present a unique collection of papers that address past, present and future issues of the pH of healthy and diseased skin. It is hoped that this collection will foster future efforts in clinical and experimental skin research.
