But after writing several other books about various subjects, mostly personal and family related, my Australian friends started to ask me when I was going to write about my time in Australia. And they would follow that question up with "do you remember the time??.." I thought yeah, those are some good stories, but who wants to read about the coming of age of a teenager. Then I realized there was more to my time in Australia than just a teenager stumbling through the awkward years of his life. And after making a trip back to Alice Springs in 2016 with several of my Australian High School mates to play baseball my memories of Australia were kick started again. I began to reflect on how my parents and siblings continue to this day to fondly recall their life in Australia and how positively it impacted them. And that whenever we get together our time in Australia seems to always enter the conversation. Its then that I realized maybe I should put those fond memories on paper. And that's what they are, memories. I didn't keep a diary or anything documenting exactly the way things were. It's just my recollections of what happened, so don't take all of this as fact. And Lord knows I have been known to embellish a story! With that said I hope this book brings back fond memories of your time in Alice Springs. And if you haven't been there, I hope this gives you the push to go.

Moving, challenging and dangerous, THE LONG WEEKEND is a haunting comic, both shockingly funny and supremely uncomfortable to read. It's images will linger with you after you've placed it upon your bedside table, turned off the lamp and settled into a restless sleep. Joshua Santospirito read the essay A LONG WEEKEND IN ALICE SPRINGS whilst living and working as a psychiatric nurse in Central Australian Aboriginal communities. It was contained in a collection of essays in The Cultural Complex - contemporary Jungian Perspectives on Psyche and Society, edited by Tom Singer published in 2004 by Routledge. At the time of reading, Josh found it very useful for reframing all of the seeming chaos around him. In 2007, as a form of cathartic meditation on the world, Josh began to draw parts of the essay into comic form which slowly became a much larger task and a labour of love. As a companion to this comic-adaption of his essay, Craig San Roque responds with a new piece of writing to be included in this book TITLED A BOOK OF SAND which further expands the poem that is central, not only to THE LONG WEEKEND, but all of Craig's writings. This book was supported by the Tasmanian Minister for the Arts through Arts Tasmania and by Nadine Kessler Design. Nadine designed the book into the beautiful object that it is.

June Newton had her husband show her how to handle the camera and light meter and in his place photographed an advertisement for the French cigarette brand Gitanes. The portrait of the smoking model would be the jump-start of a new career. In the early 1970s, Alice Springs shot several campaigns for the French hair stylist Jean Louis David; the photographs appeared under her byline as a full-page ads in renowned fashion magazines. 1974 later saw the first Alice Springs cover image adorning French Elle. By this time she had also received innumerable commissions for portraits, some of which have become iconic. The roster of artists, actors and musicians depicted by Alice Springs over the last 40 years reads like a "who's who" of the international cultural scene on both sides of the Atlantic. Many portraits were magazine assignments from Paris to Los Angeles; others resulted from private initiative.

Remote Freedoms explores the contradictions and tensions of localized human rights work in very remote Indigenous communities. Based on field research with Anangu of Central Australia, this book investigates how universal human rights are understood, practiced, negotiated, and challenged in concert and in conflict with Indigenous rights. Moving between communities, government, regional NGOs, and international UN forums, Sarah E. Holcombe addresses how the notion of rights plays out within the distinctive and ambivalent sociopolitical context of Australia, and focusing specifically on Indigenous women and their experiences of violence. Can the secular modern rights-bearer accommodate the ideals of the relational, spiritual Anangu person? Engaging in a translation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights into the local Pintupi-Luritja vernacular and observing various Indigenous interactions with law enforcement and domestic violence outreach programs, Holcombe offers new insights into our understanding of how the global rights discourse is circulated and understood within Indigenous cultures.
