Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I really hadn't given a thought to writing about my time in Australia. But after writing several other books about various subjects, mostly personal and family related, my Australian friends started to ask me when I was going to write about my time in Australia. And they would follow that question up with "do you remember the time??.." I thought yeah, those are some good stories, but who wants to read about the coming of age of a teenager. Then I realized there was more to my time in Australia than just a teenager stumbling through the awkward years of his life. And after making a trip back to Alice Springs in 2016 with several of my Australian High School mates to play baseball my memories of Australia were kick started again. I began to reflect on how my parents and siblings continue to this day to fondly recall their life in Australia and how positively it impacted them. And that whenever we get together our time in Australia seems to always enter the conversation. Its then that I realized maybe I should put those fond memories on paper. And that's what they are, memories. I didn't keep a diary or anything documenting exactly the way things were. It's just my recollections of what happened, so don't take all of this as fact. And Lord knows I have been known to embellish a story! With that said I hope this book brings back fond memories of your time in Alice Springs. And if you haven't been there, I hope this gives you the push to go.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation. THE LONG WEEKEND is a graphic novel that has been adapted from an essay that explores the idea of the Cultural Complex; one of Carl Jung's early ideas about group behaviour that was left largely unexplored until very recently in the academic world. Craig San Roque, the author the original essay, acts as narrator and protagonist. He takes the reader throughout a long series of poetic thoughts, places and over the course of a long weekend in the central Australian desert town of Alice Springs whilst he grapples with an analysis of his own culture and the pain which it intentionally and unintentionally inflicts upon other cultures. Moving, challenging and dangerous, THE LONG WEEKEND is a haunting comic, both shockingly funny and supremely uncomfortable to read. It's images will linger with you after you've placed it upon your bedside table, turned off the lamp and settled into a restless sleep. Joshua Santospirito read the essay A LONG WEEKEND IN ALICE SPRINGS whilst living and working as a psychiatric nurse in Central Australian Aboriginal communities. It was contained in a collection of essays in The Cultural Complex - contemporary Jungian Perspectives on Psyche and Society, edited by Tom Singer published in 2004 by Routledge. At the time of reading, Josh found it very useful for reframing all of the seeming chaos around him. In 2007, as a form of cathartic meditation on the world, Josh began to draw parts of the essay into comic form which slowly became a much larger task and a labour of love. As a companion to this comic-adaption of his essay, Craig San Roque responds with a new piece of writing to be included in this book TITLED A BOOK OF SAND which further expands the poem that is central, not only to THE LONG WEEKEND, but all of Craig's writings. This book was supported by the Tasmanian Minister for the Arts through Arts Tasmania and by Nadine Kessler Design. Nadine designed the book into the beautiful object that it is.

Book excerpt: Brolga (aka Chris Barns) is the 6ft 7in strong but sensitive Aussie star of the extraordinary BBC series Kangaroo Dundee. Brolga lives in a simple tin shed in the outback where he raises orphaned baby kangaroos. It is a sad fact of life that kangaroo mothers are at the mercy of speeding cars in this part of the world - killed on the road, their young still tucked up in their pouches. These young joeys holding on to life, have been given a second chance thanks to the kindness and dedication of Brolga, who carefully retrieves them and nurses them back to health. Brolga has been rescuing these special creatures for years, slowly and painstakingly creating a kangaroo sanctuary for the many kangaroos he has saved, reared and loved. He has dedicated his life to observing how kangaroo mums care for their babies and does everything he can to replicate this. The baby kangaroos, traumatised by losing their mother so early, are tucked up into pillow cases and kept warm and comforted next to Brolga at night. We see him getting up at 4am to bottle feed them, washing them in a little tub, taking them to the supermarket and generally mothering them with heart breaking tenderness. Charting Brolga's life with the joeys and honing in on his relationship with one or two in particular, Kangaroo Dundee tells the heart-warming, sometimes funny, sometimes poignant story of one man's unique relationship with a group of extraordinary animals.

Book excerpt: 'Probably more people have shed tears over the last page of A Town Like Alice than about any other novel in the English language... remarkable' Guardian Jean Paget is just twenty years old and working in Malaya when the Japanese invasion begins. When she is captured she joins a group of other European women and children whom the Japanese force to march for miles through the jungle - an experience that leads to the deaths of many. Due to her courageous spirit and ability to speak Malay, Jean takes on the role of leader of the sorry gaggle of prisoners and many end up owing their lives to her indomitable spirit. While on the march, the group run into some Australian prisoners, one of whom, Joe Harman, helps them steal some food, and is horrifically punished by the Japanese as a result. After the war, Jean tracks Joe down in Australia and together they begin to dream of surmounting the past and transforming his one-horse outback town into a thriving community like Alice Springs... With an introduction by Eric Lomax, author of The Railway Man

Book excerpt: THE RUNAWAY INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER “The Bride Stripped Bare shows us the inside–out of marriage, infidelity, obsession and taxi drivers (I may never take a cab ride in London again). . . . Few books can be both dark and light. This one dances on the edge, and sometimes crosses it, with much satisfaction to be had on either side.”— Valerie Frankel, author of The Accidental Virgin An explosive novel of sex, secrecy, and escape. A woman disappears. Her car lies abandoned on a remote bluff; no body is found. Known by her family and friends as quiet and self-contained, she has left behind an incendiary diary chronicling a disturbing journey of sexual awakening. The diary opens on her honeymoon in Morocco: she believes herself to be happy—or happy enough, anyway. Swiftly, this security masquerading as love fractures in an act of massive betrayal, only to propel her into a world of desire and fantasy and recklessness. In need of guidance, she finds an unlikely heroine in the anonymous author of a dusty, rare manuscript. Written by a woman in the 1600s, it is a cry from the heart for women to live and love freely. Emboldened, she allows herself to discover the intoxicating power of knowing what she wants and how to get it. The question is, how long can her soul sustain a perilous double life? Coolly impassioned, Bride Stripped Bare tells shocking truths about love and sex. Couched in a deceptively simple style, its gorgeous, incantatory rhythms will make you question whether it is ever entirely possible to know another person.

Book excerpt: What is going on in the often troubled town of Alice Springs? Trouble goes into the ordered environment of the courtroom to lay out in detail some of the dark disorder in the town's recent history. Men kill their wives, kill one another in seeming senseless acts of revenge, families feud, women join the violence, children watch and learn from the sidelines. Journalist Kieran Finnane follows the stories through witness accounts, recognizing the horror and tragedy of violent events, and the guilt or innocence of perpetrators. She draws on a 25-year practice of journalism in Alice Springs, as well as experience of its everyday life, to add fine grain to the portrait of a town and region being painfully remade.

Book excerpt: ‘On a Tuesday morning, I make my way to the Gap View Hotel for a drinking session starting at 10 a.m. I'm told this is one of Alice Springs' three notorious 'animal bars' … As I wander around, a Sudanese security guard approaches me, his face concerned. Am I lost? he wants to know. In a way, I am. I don't want a beer. It's 10 a.m., for Chrissake. ’ In Booze Territory, Anna Krien takes a clear-eyed look at Indigenous binge-drinking – who does it, why, and what it means. She visits bars brimming with morning drinkers and investigates alcoholic after-effects ranging from extreme violence to extraordinarily high rates of cirrhosis of the liver. This is an essay which never fails to see the human dimension of an intractable problem and shine a light on its deep causes.

Book excerpt: Annotated in his wry, inimitable voice, Juergen Teller presents over three decades of fashion and editorial work in a groundbreaking volume that combines photography, collage, and candid (and often humorous) autobiography. One of the most influential photographers working today, Juergen Teller creates images that are instantly recognizable. Raw, often overexposed and displaying a spontaneity and candor, Teller’s visual language reflects a measured yet uncompromising sense of rebellion. This book includes landmark editorials with nearly every important fashion label of the era and celebrities from Kate Moss to Charlotte Rampling and Kurt Cobain to Yves Saint Laurent. Outtakes of iconic shoots (including infamous ones with Courtney Love, Cindy Sherman, Marc Jacobs, Victoria Beckham, and Björk) that have never been published will be included in this volume. Teller first broke into fashion in 1996 with a magazine cover of a naked Kristen McMenamy with the word Versace scrawled across her chest. Since then, his fashion photography has been featured in all the international Vogues, AnOther Magazine, Index, Self-Service, W, Details, Purple, i-D, and 032c, among others. A highly sought-after cult hero and the author of many iconic campaigns, Teller has collaborated with the likes of Helmut Lang, Raf Simons, Hedi Slimane, Nicolas Ghesquière, Phoebe Philo, Vivienne Westwood, Miuccia Prada, and Isabel Marant, and shot every season of Marc Jacobs’s ready-to-wear collections from 1998 to 2014.

Book excerpt: An Alice Girl is Tanya Heaslip's extraordinary story of growing up in the late 1960s and early 70s on a vast and isolated outback cattle property just north of Alice Springs. Tanya's parents, Janice and Grant 'the Boss', were pioneers. They developed the cattle station where water was scarce, where all power was dependent on generators and where a trip to town for supplies usually meant a full day's journey. Grant was determined to teach his children how to survive in this severe and isolated environment and his lessons were often harsh. Tanya and her siblings led a childhood unimaginable to many Australians. Whether working the mobs of cattle with the stockmen, playing cattle-duffing on horseback or singing and doing lessons at their School of the Air desks, the children were always aware of the demands of the land. But while her sister and brothers loved riding and working stock, Tanya's heart longed to be back at the homestead with her books and stories. In a childhood that many would consider very tough, Tanya tells of this precious time with raw honesty, humour, love and kindness. This is the story of an Alice girl. 'Tanya Heaslip lived the outback childhood of Australian mythology. Stories like this remind us that love of place is universal.' Kim Mahood, NSW Premier's Literary Award for Craft for a Dry Lake 'Tanya's story glows with love for family and the rugged, wild outback land that never leaves her heart.' Toni Tapp Coutts, bestselling author of A Sunburnt Childhood 'Territory station kids like Tanya had the ultimate upbringing . . . A great read!' Ted Egan AO, bestselling author of Outback Songman
