Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alice, or the Mysteries: A Sequel to "Ernest Maltravers" As we have already said, Ernest Maltravers and Alice are one story, the leading characters of both being the same. In the present volume we have an account of the early years, training, and development into womanhood of Evelyn Cam eron, one of the most charming creations of Bul wer's genius, to whom Maltravers, a fourth time love-smitten, is finally betrothed, but who, by an unexpected turn of events, is married, not to that heart-breaker, but to Colonel Legard. Some new minor characters are introduced, among the most interesting of whom are Aubrey and Merton, the rectors; Caroline Merton; the stubborn, passionate old brute, Legard, the admiral; his nephew George, who, regarding his uncle as an exhaustless mine, goes on breaking hearts and making debts till one morning he wakes in the bench; and Douce, the nervous, stammering little banker, - all of whom are well drawn, but require no special comment. Novelists, even of the highest genius, will always require, we suppose, the help of remarkable acci dents, extraordinary meetings, strange surprises, and other such machinery, to work out their plots. Lawyer Barnett looks at women who detect, at women as sleuths and at the evolving roles of women in professions and in society. Excellent for all women's studies programs as well as for the mystery hound. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first translations of Lewis Carroll's Alice books appeared in Japan in 1899, Alice has found her way into nearly every facet of Japanese life and popular culture. The books have been translated into Japanese more than 500 times, resulting in more editions of these works in Japanese than any other language except English. Generations of Japanese children learned English from textbooks containing Alice excerpts. Japan's internationally famous fashion vogue, Lolita, merges Alice with French Rococo style. In Japan Alice is everywhere--in manga, literature, fine art, live-action film and television shows, anime, video games, clothing, restaurants, and household goods consumed by people of all ages and genders. In Alice in Japanese Wonderlands, Amanda Kennell traverses the breadth of Alice's Japanese media environment, starting in 1899 and continuing through 60s psychedelia and 70s intellectual fads to the present, showing how a set of nineteenth-century British children's books became a vital element in Japanese popular culture. Using Japan's myriad adaptations to investigate how this modern media landscape developed, Kennell reveals how Alice connects different fields of cultural production and builds cohesion out of otherwise disparate media, artists, and consumers. The first sustained examination of Japanese Alice adaptations, her work probes the meaning of Alice in Wonderland as it was adapted by a cast of characters that includes the "father of the Japanese short story," Ryūnosuke Akutagawa; the renowned pop artist Yayoi Kusama; and the best-selling manga collective CLAMP. While some may deride adaptive activities as mere copying, the form Alice takes in Japan today clearly reflects domestic considerations and creativity, not the desire to imitate. By engaging with studies of adaptation, literature, film, media, and popular culture, Kennell uses Japan's proliferation of Alices to explore both Alice and the Japanese media environment.

Book excerpt: This unique collection of the greatest British mysteries & crime novels has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards. Frank Froest: The Maelstrom The Grell Mystery C. N. Williamson & A. M. Williamson: The Motor Maid The Girl Who Had Nothing The Second Latchkey The Castle of Shadows The House by the Lock The Guests of Hercules The Port of Adventure The Brightener The Lion's Mouse The Powers and Maxine Isabel Ostander: One Thirty The Crevice Island of Intrigue Superintendent Frank Castle Froest (1858-1930) was a British detective and crime writer. As one of the country's top detectives, he was involved in famous cases like Jameson Raid, arresting the jewel-thief 'Harry the Valet' and Dr. Crippen. Charles Norris Williamson (1859–1920) and Alice Muriel Williamson (1869-1933) were British novelists who jointly wrote a number of novels which cover the early days of motoring and can also be read as travelogues. Isabel Egenton Ostrander (1883–1924) was a British mystery writer of the early twentieth century who used, besides her own name, the pseudonyms Robert Orr Chipperfield, David Fox, and Douglas Grant. In 1920s she was notable enough to be parodied by Agatha Christie in Partners in Crime, a Tommy and Tuppence mystery that parodies many of Christie's idols.
