Book excerpt: "Alice From Wonderland" is a hilarious sci-fi fantasy about "Airhead," a rocket crash test dummy who lives in the twenty-third century. This is the third episode in this trilogy of Airhead's adventures in space to recover his brain that keeps getting stolen by aliens. The humorous futuristic style might be compared to "Futurama" or "Rick and Morty." You'll enjoy laughs, chuckles, puns, wordplay and mind play on every page. The story is illustrated by the author, using little cartoon drawings to help the reader visualize outrageous situations and laugh more. The story reads well on its own, but is best enjoyed when read as part three of the "Airhead In Space" trilogy. The first story, episode one, is called, "Planet 3," wherein, Airhead's brain is stolen by Illudians, who live on Planet 3, in the same orbit as Earth, on the opposite side of the sun. His absurd adventures through space and seven and a half dimensions will keep you laughing. The second episode is, "The Martian Conspiracy." This time, the Martians swipe Airhead's brain, and more inter-planetary and inter-dimensional hilarity ensues. You'll meet aliens, androids a hot digital assistant and a fortune-telling gypsy. The trilogy is "R" rated. There are adult situations and a bit of harsh language, but nothing graphic, all very funny though. You are guaranteed to laugh. Each of the three episodes comes with a warning: Be careful what and how you drink while reading. It may suddenly come out your nose and get scotch and snot all over your display screen! The "Tonight Show" appearance with Johnny Carson is priceless! If you are old enough to remember Johnny Carson, yo won't stop laughing. You'll have to get all three episodes to find which one it's in. You can't help but enjoy Airhead's adventures and want for more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title provides a comprehensive, unified tutorial covering the most recent advances in the emerging technology of free-space optics (FSO), a field in which interest and attention continue to grow along with the number of new challenges. This book is intended as an all-inclusive source to serve the needs of those who require information about the fundamentals of FSO, as well as up-to-date advanced knowledge of the state-of-the-art in the technologies available today. This text is intended for graduate students, and will also be useful for research scientists and engineers with an interest in the field. FSO communication is a practical solution for creating a three dimensional global broadband communications grid, offering bandwidths far beyond what is possible in the Radio Frequency (RF) range. However, the attributes of atmospheric turbulence and scattering impose perennial limitations on availability and reliability of FSO links. From a systems point-of-view, this groundbreaking book provides a thorough understanding of channel behavior, which can be used to design and evaluate optimum transmission techniques that operate under realistic atmospheric conditions. Topics addressed include: • FSO Physical and Statistical Models: Single/Multiple Inputs/Outputs • Understanding FSO: Theory and Systems Analysis • Modulation and Coding for Free-Space Optical Channels • Atmospheric Mitigation and Compensation for FSO Links • Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) Ultraviolet and Indoor FSO Communications • FSO Platforms: UAV and Mobile • Retromodulators for Free Space Data links • Hybrid Optical RF Communications • Free-space and Atmospheric Quantum Communications • Other related topics: Chaos-based and Terahertz (THz) FSO Communications

Book excerpt: What on earth do bananas have to do with quantum mechanics? From a modern perspective, quantum mechanics is about strangely counterintuitive correlations between separated systems, which can be exploited in feats like quantum teleportation, unbreakable cryptographic schemes, and computers with enormously enhanced computing power. Schro'dinger coined the term "entanglement" to describe these bizarre correlations. Bananaworld -- an imaginary island with "entangled" bananas -- brings to life the fascinating discoveries of the new field of quantum information without the mathematical machinery of quantum mechanics. The connection with quantum correlations is fully explained in sections written for the non-physicist reader with a serious interest in understanding the mysteries of the quantum world. The result is a subversive but entertaining book that is accessible and interesting to a wide range of readers, with the novel thesis that quantum mechanics is about the structure of information. What we have discovered is that the possibilities for representing, manipulating, and communicating information are very different than we thought.

Book excerpt: "The works of Lewis Carroll show an abiding interest on the part of the author in the relationship between education, language and authority. In particular, the Alices are the story of a young girl who must learn to deal with a variety of characters in dream-worlds where the power of language reigns. It is therefore necessary for Alice to learn how language is used for authoritarian purposes and to discover ways of defending herself against it. It is the purpose of this thesis to investigate, in many cases for the first time, the ways in which Alice is able to find "spaces" in language where authority breaks down, places where the fundamental nature of language is unable to support authoritarian use. In this way, "space" will become both a metaphor and a figurative model for Alice's growing knowledge of and resistance to authority." --

Book excerpt: The exploration of the subnuclear world is done through increasingly complex experiments covering a wide range of energy and performed in a large variety of environments ranging from particle accelerators, underground detectors to satellites and the space laboratory. Among recent advances one has to indicate, for instance, first results obtained from space and LHC experiments and progress done in preparation of the latter experiments upgrades, including plans for the LHC machine upgrade. The achievement of these research programs calls for novel techniques, new materials and instrumentation to be used in detectors, often of large scale. Therefore, fundamental physics is at the forefront of technological advance and also leads to many applications. Among these, medical applications have a particular importance due to health and social benefits they bring to the public. Sample Chapter(s). Science highlights from the Fenni Observatory (5,046 KB). Contents: Space Experiments and Cosmic Rays Observations; Production and Propagation of Cosmic Rays in the Galaxy and Heliosphere; Dark Matter Searches, Underwater and Underground Experiments; High Energy Physics Experiments; Tracker and Position Sensitive Detectors; Calorimetry; Advanced Detectors, Particles Identication, Devices and Materials in Radiation; Broader Impact Activities, Treatments and Software Application. Readership: Post-graduate students, researchers and engineers.

Book excerpt: When an orbiting White Hole rolls through Jennifer Arthur's backyard she, her best friend Willa Walker, and her marmalade cat Atta Girl are swept into it. After a dizzying journey they are marooned in a universe, where everything is white, even the girls. Only Atta Girl retains her rich, tawny hues. The three are promptly confronted by the terrible Ghanglers who rule that planet's surface. Led by the vicious Tehrran Tuhlla, the Ghanglers use the power of the whirlwind to enforce rigid planetary standards of conformity as they go about their relentless business on the individual tornadoes which serve them instead of feet. As the girls and Atta flee from a gang of Ghanglers, they are befriended by Morgan, the Magnificent Wandering Wohtt. Morgan 'resembles a humungous, full-blown dandelion," but his courage and ingenuity make him a lovable and heroic companion. Morgan leads them to refuge in the secret, underground nation of Chrystellea, where the citizens have problems of their own. Their leader, Behrrn the Rememberer, has forgotten The Dream, a dream which the people cherish, of color in a colorless universe. Now though, even the cherished 'memory' of color fades, draining from the White World 'like water from a bathtub." The sequel, Jenny and the Dread Dimension, will be published in the fall of 2006.
