Book excerpt: Algebraical and Topological Foundations of Geometry contains the proceedings of the Colloquium on Algebraic and Topological Foundations of Geometry, held in Utrecht, the Netherlands in August 1959. The papers review the algebraical and topological foundations of geometry and cover topics ranging from the geometric algebra of the Möbius plane to the theory of parallels with applications to closed geodesies. Groups of homeomorphisms and topological descriptive planes are also discussed. Comprised of 26 chapters, this book introduces the reader to the theory of parallels with applications to closed geodesies; groups of homeomorphisms; complemented modular lattices; and topological descriptive planes. Subsequent chapters focus on collineation groups; exceptional algebras and exceptional groups; the connection between algebra and constructions with ruler and compasses; and the use of differential geometry and analytic group theory methods in foundations of geometry. Von Staudt projectivities of Moufang planes are also considered, and an axiomatic treatment of polar geometry is presented. This monograph will be of interest to students of mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to abstract algebraic geometry, with the only prerequisites being results from commutative algebra, which are stated as needed, and some elementary topology. More than 400 exercises distributed throughout the book offer specific examples as well as more specialised topics not treated in the main text, while three appendices present brief accounts of some areas of current research. This book can thus be used as textbook for an introductory course in algebraic geometry following a basic graduate course in algebra. Robin Hartshorne studied algebraic geometry with Oscar Zariski and David Mumford at Harvard, and with J.-P. Serre and A. Grothendieck in Paris. He is the author of "Residues and Duality", "Foundations of Projective Geometry", "Ample Subvarieties of Algebraic Varieties", and numerous research titles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic topology is a basic part of modern mathematics, and some knowledge of this area is indispensable for any advanced work relating to geometry, including topology itself, differential geometry, algebraic geometry, and Lie groups. This book provides a detailed treatment of algebraic topology both for teachers of the subject and for advanced graduate students in mathematics either specializing in this area or continuing on to other fields. J. Peter May's approach reflects the enormous internal developments within algebraic topology over the past several decades, most of which are largely unknown to mathematicians in other fields. But he also retains the classical presentations of various topics where appropriate. Most chapters end with problems that further explore and refine the concepts presented. The final four chapters provide sketches of substantial areas of algebraic topology that are normally omitted from introductory texts, and the book concludes with a list of suggested readings for those interested in delving further into the field.

Book excerpt: In Part One of this comprehensive and frequently cited treatment, the authors develop Euclidean and Bolyai-Lobachevskian geometry on the basis of an axiom system due, in principle, to the work of David Hilbert. Part Two develops projective geometry in much the same way. An Introduction provides background on topological space, analytic geometry, and other relevant topics, and rigorous proofs appear throughout the text. Topics covered by Part One include axioms of incidence and order, axioms of congruence, the axiom of continuity, models of absolute geometry, and Euclidean geometry, culminating in the treatment of Bolyai-Lobachevskian geometry. Part Two examines axioms of incidents and order and the axiom of continuity, concluding with an exploration of models of projective geometry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rapid and concise presentation of the essential ideas and results of algebraic topology follows the axiomatic foundations pioneered by Eilenberg and Steenrod. The approach of the book is pragmatic: while most proofs are given, those that are particularly long or technical are omitted, and results are stated in a form that emphasizes practical use over maximal generality. Moreover, to better reveal the logical structure of the subject, the separate roles of algebra and topology are illuminated. Assuming a background in point-set topology, Fundamentals of Algebraic Topology covers the canon of a first-year graduate course in algebraic topology: the fundamental group and covering spaces, homology and cohomology, CW complexes and manifolds, and a short introduction to homotopy theory. Readers wishing to deepen their knowledge of algebraic topology beyond the fundamentals are guided by a short but carefully annotated bibliography.

Book excerpt: This book gives an intuitive and hands-on introduction to Topological Data Analysis (TDA). Covering a wide range of topics at levels of sophistication varying from elementary (matrix algebra) to esoteric (Grothendieck spectral sequence), it offers a mirror of data science aimed at a general mathematical audience. The required algebraic background is developed in detail. The first third of the book reviews several core areas of mathematics, beginning with basic linear algebra and applications to data fitting and web search algorithms, followed by quick primers on algebra and topology. The middle third introduces algebraic topology, along with applications to sensor networks and voter ranking. The last third covers key contemporary tools in TDA: persistent and multiparameter persistent homology. Also included is a user’s guide to derived functors and spectral sequences (useful but somewhat technical tools which have recently found applications in TDA), and an appendix illustrating a number of software packages used in the field. Based on a course given as part of a masters degree in statistics, the book is appropriate for graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several recent investigations have focused attention on spaces and manifolds which are non-compact but where the problems studied have some kind of "control near infinity". This monograph introduces the category of spaces that are "boundedly controlled" over the (usually non-compact) metric space Z. It sets out to develop the algebraic and geometric tools needed to formulate and to prove boundedly controlled analogues of many of the standard results of algebraic topology and simple homotopy theory. One of the themes of the book is to show that in many cases the proof of a standard result can be easily adapted to prove the boundedly controlled analogue and to provide the details, often omitted in other treatments, of this adaptation. For this reason, the book does not require of the reader an extensive background. In the last chapter it is shown that special cases of the boundedly controlled Whitehead group are strongly related to lower K-theoretic groups, and the boundedly controlled theory is compared to Siebenmann's proper simple homotopy theory when Z = IR or IR2.

Starting from solutions of polynomial equations, modern tools of the subject soon appear, motivated by how they improve our understanding of geometrical concepts. In many places, analogies and differences with related mathematical areas are explained. The text approaches foundations of algebraic geometry in a complete and self-contained way, also covering the underlying algebra. The last two chapters include a comprehensive treatment of cohomology and discuss some of its applications in algebraic geometry.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the latest advances in algebraic topology, from homotopy theory, braid groups, configuration spaces and toric topology, to transformation groups and the adjoining area of knot theory. It consists of well-written original research papers and survey articles by subject experts, most of which were presented at the “7th East Asian Conference on Algebraic Topology” held at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali, Punjab, India, from December 1 to 6, 2017. Algebraic topology is a broad area of mathematics that has seen enormous developments over the past decade, and as such this book is a valuable resource for graduate students and researchers working in the field.
