Book excerpt: This volume brings together the work of researchers from various disciplines where aspects of descriptive, mathematical, computational or design knowledge concerning metaphor and analogy, especially in the context of agents, have emerged. The book originates from an international workshop on Computation for Metaphors, Analogy, and Agents (CMAA), held in Aizu, Japan in April 1998. The 19 carefully reviewed and revised papers presented together with an introduction by the volume editor are organized into sections on Metaphor and Blending, Embodiment, Interaction, Imitation, Situated Mapping in Space and Time, Algebraic Engineering: Respecting Structure, and a Sea-Change in Viewpoints.

Book Synopsis Semigroups and Their Applications by : Simon M. Goberstein

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most papers published in this volume are based on lectures presented at the Chico Conference on Semigroups held on the Chico campus of the Cal ifornia State University on April 10-12, 1986. The conference was spon sored by the California State University, Chico in cooperation with the Engineering Computer Sciences Department of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company. The program included seven 50-minute addresses and seventeen 30-minute lectures. Speakers were invited by the organizing committee consisting of S. M. Goberstein and P. M. Higgins. The purpose of the conference was to bring together some of the leading researchers in the area of semigroup theory for a discussion of major recent developments in the field. The algebraic theory of semigroups is growing so rapidly and new important results are being produced at such a rate that the need for another meeting was well justified. It was hoped that the conference would help to disseminate new results more rapidly among those working in semi groups and related areas and that the exchange of ideas would stimulate research in the subject even further. These hopes were realized beyond all expectations.
Book Synopsis Semigroups and Formal Languages by : Jorge M. Andre
Download or read book Semigroups and Formal Languages written by Jorge M. Andre and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This festschrift volume in honour of Donald B McAlister on the occasion of his 65th birthday presents papers from leading researchers in semigroups and formal languages. The contributors cover a number of areas of current interest: from pseudovarieties and regular languages to ordered groupoids and one-relator groups, and from semigroup algebras to presentations of monoids and transformation semigroups. The papers are accessible to graduate students as well as researchers seeking new directions for future work.

Book Synopsis Semigroups: Algebraic Theory And Applications To Formal Languages And Codes by : Celestina Bonzini
Download or read book Semigroups: Algebraic Theory And Applications To Formal Languages And Codes written by Celestina Bonzini and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993-10-29 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings present some new topics and techniques of semigroup theory. Papers by leading experts in this theory are collected. Since results on semigroups have naturally been employed in formal languages and codes, the focus is also on these directions.
Download or read book Semigroups written by K. P. Shum and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first International Conference on Semigroups and its Related Topics, held in Kunming, China, 1995, celebrated the establishment of the Institute of Pure Mathematics at Yunnan University, Kunming. The event attracted mathematicians from around the world, who contributed talks and papers on the new developments of semigroups and its applications. These included topics on algebraic semigroups, combinatorial semigroups, computer languages, codings, and universal algebras. Since the conference, the papers have been re-edited, and in some cases revised, and are now cummulated into this review volume, making it a lasting reference book on the development of Semigroup theory. Some survey articles written by experts in the field, and which were not presented at the conference, are also included in this book.
Book Synopsis Semigroups of Operators: Theory and Applications by : A.V. Balakrishnan
Download or read book Semigroups of Operators: Theory and Applications written by A.V. Balakrishnan and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Proceedings comprise the bulk of the papers presented at the Inter national Conference on Semigroups of Opemtors: Theory and Contro~ held 14-18 December 1998, Newport Beach, California, U.S.A. The intent of the Conference was to highlight recent advances in the the ory of Semigroups of Operators which provides the abstract framework for the time-domain solutions of time-invariant boundary-value/initial-value problems of partial differential equations. There is of course a firewall between the ab stract theory and the applications and one of the Conference aims was to bring together both in the hope that it may be of value to both communities. In these days when all scientific activity is judged by its value on "dot com" it is not surprising that mathematical analysis that holds no promise of an immediate commercial product-line, or even a software tool-box, is not high in research priority. We are particularly pleased therefore that the National Science Foundation provided generous financial support without which this Conference would have been impossible to organize. Our special thanks to Dr. Kishan Baheti, Program Manager.

Book Synopsis Proceedings of the Conference on Finite Groups by : William R. Scott
Download or read book Proceedings of the Conference on Finite Groups written by William R. Scott and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the Conference on Finite Groups provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of finite group theory. This book presents the problem of characterizing simple groups in terms of the local structure of a group. Organized into five parts encompassing 43 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the characterization of the Chevalley groups over fields of odd order and indicates the role of this characterization in the theory of component type groups. This text then examines the structure as well as the representations of specific simple groups. Other chapters consider the general theory of representations and characters of finite groups. This book discusses as well permutation groups and the connection between group theory and geometry. The final chapter deals with finite solvable groups as well as the theory of formations. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians, graduate students, and research workers.
