Stephens (1812–1883) became one of the South’s leading politicians and lawyers. Thomas E. Schott has written the first scholarly biography that analyzes the interplay between the public and private Stephens and between state and national politics during his contradictory career. Stephens was a celebrated Whig, turned Democrat, who served as congressman from 1843 to 1859 and an antisecessionist who became vice-president of the Confederacy. Ignored by the Davis administration once in office, he eventually opposed most of its wartime policies. Schott argues that Stephens’ devotion to the southern cause was as genuine as his devotion to civil liberties and states’ rights. After the war, he became an elder statesman for Georgia, serving nine more years as a congress-man and the last five months of his life as governor.

Book excerpt: This biography appears in the series of American Crisis Biographies. The author has obtained much interesting material from files of Georgia and other Southern newspapers of the 1840's, '50's, and '60's, from old letters and scrapbooks of the war period, and from manuscripts in the possession of the archives of the government at Washington.Alexander H. Stephens was one of the most interesting personalities in the American Civil War. He was Vice-President of the short-lived Southern Confederacy. A remarkable man in many respects, his gift of eloquence gave him an almost unique position as a lawyer, and his constitutional views lend a certain piquancy to the record of his public life. He was not so much concerned in the retention or abolition of slavery when he assisted to fight the North as in the assertion of State rights. He was their most powerful advocate, and he supported the war in so far as it was intended to uphold the right to secede. When the result of the war showed that might and his theory of right were on opposite sides, he accepted the event, however unwelcome, as conclusive. It is not easy for us to-day to understand all that was involved in the triumph of the North and the placing of the whites of the South at the political mercy of their former slaves. We get an idea from this biography. "A great life full of tragedy both public and private, yet also full of triumph and of usefulness" is Mr. Pendleton's summing-up. "A scholar, a man of deep political learning, of profound knowledge of constitutional history, of moderate opinions and temperate spirit" the "Saturday Review" called him when noticing his "Constitutional Men of the Late War Between the States." This life is worth reading first as a study of the man, secondly, for the light it throws on the struggle between North and South. The author also delves into secession movements in the country preceeding the Southern movement, particular the opposition of New England to The War of 1812 and their desire to secede as a result. Very logical book, not of the sentimental, syrupy, variety at all. Well-sourced and annotated.

Stephens I have, since I came here, come to the conclusion that words are - if you please - moral instruments capa ble of effecting much, when properly applied and directed. And it is altogether useless, at any and all times to talk, without having in view some Object to effect. In legislating in Georgia, it is waste of breath for a man to talk about Greece and Rome, Scipio and Hannibal, Tyre and Carthage, or any of that learned sort Of lore. If one indulges much in it, he is soon looked upon as a fool, speaking In an unknown tongue, ' and very properly so too. Eloquence, true eloquence, is certainly in some degree an art; but in nothing more than in selecting and fitting the matter to the time, place, and circumstances. The whole generation of our young orators, instead of reading Blair for rules, Scott and Addison for figures, and Byron and Shake Speare for quotations, had better be studying their sub ject, and thinking to whom they are going to present it, and how they will most probably engage attention, and produce conviction in the minds of those to whom it is presented. Success in producing convictlon is the object of oratory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alexander H. Stephens A life of Alexander H. Stephens suited to the needs of the modern reader is desirable not only because of the peculiar personality of one of the ablest Of the Southern statesmen of the Old regime, and because Of his association with great events as vice-president of the Southern Confederacy, but because he was one of the most consistent figures in the long struggle between the champions Of State sovereignty and the supporters of Federal supremacy. Though a fellow Georgian, I have found Stephens chiefly interesting as a battling representative of State sovereignty in its conflict with nationalism, and as one of the ablest of those who de fied destiny in the age-long, evolutionary process - to which the terms right and wrong are too indi vidual and personal to apply - finally producing a na tion out of a mere confederation. The extent of the author's study of this general subj ect may be seen from the bibliography at the end Of the volume, practically all available sources having been drawn on in order to illustrate the early weakness Of the Federal govern ment, the division of sovereignty under our dual sys tem, the conflict between the partisans Of State and nation, and the nullification and disunion sentiment so Often and so violently manifested in all sections of the country during the first seventy years after the adoption of the Constitution. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...
