Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alexander Gregg: First Bishop of Texas In a pastoral letter Of the 3oth Of January, 1861, Bishop Polk, of Louisiana, had expressed the principle involved in the secession Of his state as affecting the Diocese, taking the extreme position that we Ckurck must follow nationality; and by the mere force Of the secession Of the state of Louisiana, the Diocese of Louisiana was torn away from all ecclesiastical re lations and was isolated with respect to all other Dio ceses in the world. This bold and bald statement that political action Of the state determines z'pso facto the status Of the Church in its most intimate relations with its component parts, and the resulting dissolu tion of all constitutional and canonical connections and Obligations, was never accepted by other leaders in the South, though, with the exception Of Bishop Gregg, all the Bishops and Dioceses Of the South. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deadline was the hour of adjournment of the 1876 Texas legislative session. The Texas and Pacific Railroad was on the edge of losing a fifteen-million-dollar land grant if it failed to complete the track to Fort Worth on time. For the struggling frontier town, the stakes were higher – its very future was on the line. Known as a prairie oasis, Fort Worth had grown into a bustling town during the time when cowboys moving their herds north to market stopped for supplies an da little entertainment and refreshment in the saloons and dance halls before heading out into the hot sun and dusty plains. Business was brisk in these times, but the days of the long trail drive were numbered. "Cowtown" needed a railroad to survive. Construction of the Texas and Pacific line proved difficult and slow. Confidence sagged under debts brought on by a nationwide banking crisis. During the lowest point, a letter to the editor of the Dallas Herald compared Fort Worth to a cemetery. But Fort Worth refused to die. Where the West Begins chronicles this railroad race to Fort Worth and the subsequent rise of "Cowtown" as a livestock center. Completion of the railroad link to Fort Worth also proved a decided asset for Tarrant County, attracting links from more railroads and new industries. The new county would soon be on its way to becoming the successful and prosperous region it is today. Written by Janet L. Schmelzer, Where the West Begins traces Fort Worth's energetic advance from the days of a cattle town through the era of oil and aviation, and today's high technology and finance – while showcasing Tarrant County's pride in its Western heritage and culture. This is the exciting story of a vibrant county and its primary city that unfolds in a dramatic visual adventure. Truly, here is the story of where the West begins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While slavery and secession divided the Union during the American Civil War, they also severed the Northern and Southern dioceses of the Protestant Episcopal Church. In Challenges on the Emmaus Road, T. Felder Dorn focuses on the way Northern and Southern Episcopal bishops confronted and responded to the issues and events of their turbulent times. Prior to the Civil War, Southern bishops were industrious in evangelizing among enslaved African Americans, but at the same time they supported the legal and social aspects of the "peculiar institution." Southern and Northern bishops parted company over the institution of slavery, not over the place of blacks in the Episcopal Church. As Southern states left the Union, Southern dioceses separated from the Episcopal Church in the United States. The book's title was inspired by the Gospel of Luke 24:13-35 in which the resurrected Jesus Christ walked unrecognized with his disciples and discussed the events of his own crucifixion and disappearance from his tomb. Dorn perceives that scriptural episode as a metaphor for the responses of Episcopal bishops to the events of the Civil War era. Dorn carefully summarizes the debates within the church and in secular society surrounding the important topics of the era. In doing so, he lays the groundwork for his own interpretations of church history and also provides authentic data for other church scholars to investigate such topics as faith and doctrine, evangelism, and the administrative history of one of the most important institutions in America. Dorn devotes the final chapters to the postwar reunification of the Episcopal Church and Southern bishops' involvement in establishing the Commission on Freedmen to offer help with the educational and spiritual needs of the recently emancipated slaves.
