Book Synopsis Architecture in Nineteenth-Century Photographs by : Micheline Nilsen
Download or read book Architecture in Nineteenth-Century Photographs written by Micheline Nilsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revealing that nineteenth-century photography goes beyond the functional to reflect the aesthetic, intellectual, and cultural concerns of the time, this study proposes that each photographic image of architecture be studied both as a primary visual document and an object of aesthetic inquiry. This multi-faceted approach drives Architecture in Nineteenth-Century Photographs: Essays on Reading a Collection. Despite three decades of post-colonial, post-structuralist and gender-conscious criticism, the study of architectural photography continues to privilege technical virtuosity. This volume offers a thematic exploration of the material, and a socio-historical examination that allows consideration of questions that have not been addressed comprehensively before in a single publication. Themes include exoticism and "armchair tourism"; the absence of women from architectural photography; the role of photographs as commodities; vernacular architecture and the picturesque; and historic preservation, urban renewal, and nationalism. Micheline Nilsen analyzes photographs from France and England?the two countries where photography was invented?and from around the world, representing a corpus of over 10,000 photographs from the Janos Scholz Collection of Nineteenth-Century Photographs of the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame.

Book Synopsis Modern Italian Architecture by : Karl Lagerfeld
Download or read book Modern Italian Architecture written by Karl Lagerfeld and published by . This book was released on 1999-03-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Casa Malaparte "A house like me" -- announced Curzio Malaparte, a poet and egomaniac, describing his villa on Capri. There are only a few buildings in the world which illustrate such antique beauty and mystical charm; Karl Lagerfeld has photographed the most elegiac one. The first section of the book illustrates the perfect integration of the house within the environment. In the second part Lagerfeld documents the house's interior and furniture. Lagerfeld worked for five days in November 1997 to produce these photographs of architecture and nature. He used a special photographic technique to reproduce his pictures: Polaroid-transfers on a special paper. The House in the Trees A small piece of land, several trees, a dilapidated warehouse, uninhibited buildings in the neighbourhood...This is not the place where pretentious architecture is usually created. Yet in this small village near Rome, Karl Lagerfeld discovered an extraordinary building called 'La Casa Albero Nella Pineta di Fregene', designed by the architect Perugini in 1967. This experimental building is situated in the midst of a group of trees. The construction of wood, concrete and glass encloses one room, only a few doors exist, even the toilet can be seen from the bottom. Lagerfeld's book is more than a detailed photographic study about this subtle construction. It seems that the photographer uses this subject as a pretext to "paint with the camera" his own constructive pictures.

Book Synopsis The Photographic Experience, 1839Ð1914: Images and Attitudes by :
Download or read book The Photographic Experience, 1839Ð1914: Images and Attitudes written by and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Photographic Experience deals with episodes and issues relating to the spread and practice of photography from its beginnings to World War I. Bridget and Heinz Henisch concern themselves with the reception accorded to the new art by professionals, amateurs, and the general public. They examine reactions to the new invention in the press, literature, poetry, music, and fashion; the response of intellectuals and painters; and the beliefs held by prominent photographers concerning the nature of the medium and its mission. With a wide array of images - many never before published - they illustrate the photograph's use as a record of public and private moments in life.
